wklman Report post Posted November 1, 2008 baits for fish, not deer. just thought i'd stir the embers a little bit. u hunt in MN... where there are zero predators quite the opposite 300. there's a big pack of wolves that hangs out in the swamp behind the property i hunt and they're much more of a predator then any mountain lion. last year one cut loose with a howl less then 100 yards from my stand.there is also bobcats, coyotes, fishers, red fox, poachers, and lynx so i'd say theres a few predators around. My argument against baiting is more for deer herd health then anything. when you bait deer you congregate them in one place and this promotes the spread of deseases and parasites more easily from one animal to the next.not just deer to deer but from deer to deer to elk and whatever else that comes in contact with it. look at Michigan, they had baiting for years but now with the outbreaks of CWD and bovine TB they have banned it because they know it is a contributor to the spread of communicable desease. In Minnesota baiting has been illegal since 1991. they had to cull 2600 deer in nw mn because they got bovine TB from eating feed from a cattle yard and then spread it through the herd. Guest 300ultramag. Report post Posted November 1, 2008 this is true, but in az animals are limited to water resources.Especially in certain parts of the state, so they tend to gather around the limited amount of water available. I recall a picture posted on here of 9 mule deer does bunched/crammed together in a concrete dwelling. Im not saying your statements do not have merit im just stating that they are herd animals and disease spreads rather fast among them regardless if its a water resource or a salt lick! Also it appears you are hunting in the northern part of the state. I hunt/fish in the southern part so i will stand corrected in that statement regarding the predators. bchoitz Report post Posted November 2, 2008 The Game and Fish regulations say, that you may not bait for BEAR or Migratory birds. Baiting for anything else is legal in AZ. Yep, your correct on that, I stand corrected on the legality of the issue. It must not work too well since baiting does not seem to be a common practice in Arizona. (Unlike Texas where instead of swingsets, the Walmart's have deer feeders set up out front.)
curmudgen Report post Posted November 5, 2008 I think Desertbull is right. Baiting is illegal only for bears. Jack
billrquimby Report post Posted November 5, 2008 >>>>>>Baiting deer? Is this still hunting? >>>>>> Nope. "Still hunting" involves taking a few slow steps, stopping, and looking closely around you before taking a few more steps. In Europe it is called "stalking," even though it's done before game is located. Sitting over a bait and waiting for a buck to come to the gun is something else. Don't know if there is a name for it. I hunted from baited stands in Michigan, Minnesota, Illinois and Texas and didn't care for it, even though I wound up shooting a few deer. Waiting for a buck to come to a blind is about as exciting as sitting on a bank and drowning worms -- a whole lot of boredom for a couple seconds of fun. crbn4runner Report post Posted November 17, 2008 you guys are something else, i am sure you guys hunt with big guns, high power optics, fast bows, ground blinds, during the rut, every single one of you are guilty of road hunting, range finders, scent eliminator, camoflauge, cow calls, 4-wheelers, rhinos, trail cameras. dont you think the odds are in your favor? there are many other things that you depend more than food and water for deer. what is challenging about shooting an animal at 500 yds, and when you miss he stands there, not nowing where the shot came from!!! every hunter puts as many odds in his favor to be sucessful. hopefully your not contemplating, well this 230 inch buck is coming from his food and water source, so i will pass on him lol!!!
