Tines Report post Posted October 30, 2008 Obviously these things seem to always pop up when the heat kicks up again. I was at work last night when my wife called to tell me that something happened to our golden retreiver. Come to find out, her assumption was right about it being a rattlesnake bite. We don't have the money for the antivenin so I called a friend who's a vet. He informed me that most dogs, especially bigger breeds do okay after being bitten. So, I took the cheaper route of lots of fluids, and some benedryl every now and then. This happened last night and she's running around today, eating and drinking water. Got to be a good thing..... BTW, snake was never found... She looks like a fat Shar Pei' now!! Ha Ha!! Feel bad for her face though!!

scoutm Report post Posted October 30, 2008 Same thing happened to one of my dogs this spring. The only thing my vet did different was he also gave me some antibiotics to protect against infection. He said sometimes the bite site will get infected. A few days later you couldn't tell she was ever bit.
Grayghos Report post Posted October 30, 2008 Call your vet back and have him check on getting the anti venom shots for your dog. The company name is REDROCK and the shots cost about 150 to 200 dollars for the four shots and 25 dollars for the following years. My SHORTHAIR is protected. My vet has told me that the protected dog just need to be checked out and generally set home with no big bills. If you cant find the info Call my vet House call pet vet out of Gilbert Az 480-892-4116

SilentButDeadly Report post Posted October 31, 2008 Poor Pooch! I've heard about the Redrock stuff; it is formulated for Western Diamondbacks (most common rattler in AZ) -- after the innoculations it supposedly lowers the number of anti-venom vials a dog will require. It gives the dog antibodies to neutralize the venom. I've heard the anti-venom runs 100s a vial and a bit dog can take 10+ vials. MRL1984 Report post Posted October 31, 2008 Not to take away from the dog advice, but I second the be careful out there. The last day of our hunt this evening, I darn near stepped on a coiled buzztail. I was about 2 feet from the lil guy. Forgot to snag a picture in all the excitement of introducing him to the old .40 cal.

Essentially, yes it's like an immunization. My vet recommends those pre-exposure shots...says it's a great way to help the dog not have as much trouble with a snakebite later and reduces treatment costs after a bite (if any is necessary). here is a link to some info: http://www.agiltracs.org/snakebite_article.pdf Amanda
