Courtney's story about her first deer

Recommended Posts

It was 230 am on Sunday, October 12, and we were finally leaving the house to go on my deer hunt. That what my dad kept saying, over and over. He had been going nuts since Friday. I would not take the day off from school because I did not like idea of having to make everything up. And Saturday, we were hit with the tail end of a hurricane. So, Sunday it was.

We drove to the spot and waited for the sun to come up. We had our tripods and binos ready to go. We were not glassing for more than a half hour, when my dad said he saw a buck and away we went. My dad is much better at glassing then I am, but I did try most of the time.

We were able to get 260 yards from this three point before I finally got to see him in my glass. Is that “Booner”, I asked? I really wanted to get “Booner” and nothing else even though it was my first hunt. It was not, but we decided it could be ”Booner jr”. While we were looking for a rest, the buck had enough and away he went. We looked at many deer that day, but never were able to make it happen. Later that day we say two, three points and a two point but I just could not get them in on my scope because the sun was going down in my eyes.

That night, we set up camp in the dark. I named the campsite “the owl’s nest” because of all the owls hooting. That was the best camping spot I had ever camp at except for all the dead animal parts left by the owls. That night it was cold.

Wednesday, I finally got to see “Booner” and missed him at 290 yards. “Booner” was the buck my dad had been hunting all August with his bow. When I looked at him though the spotting scope, even I knew he was big. I was so excited that I was going to get “booner”. I think it was buck fever. I was not too happy after I missed him. However, my dad kept encouraging me to stay positive. Later that day, we checked my gun back at camp. I put three shots in an inch group off my bipod at 100 yards.

Thursday came. The last day and the wind was howling. We glassed and glassed. We finally glassed up the two three points we had seen the first day. I thought they were brothers. We decided to go after them in their bed. As we were hiking in a big circle to get down wind from “booner jr, jr.”, my dad stopped me in my tracks. He had been glassing each little canyon on the lee side of the wind looking for bedded deer. He had found one. I started to get really excited. I said “is it a buck, is it!” The deer was bedded under a mesquite tree and we could not see his head. After a few minutes of looking at him through the spotting scope, my dad said it was a buck and we starting crawling. My dad was pulling out shin jiggers out by their roots so I could crawl to this one mesquite tree. Dad ranged the buck at 88 yards. I looked under every tree but I could not find him in my scope. Finally, I could see him. I could not see his horns but I was glad because I did not want to get too excited. My dad asked me if I was on it. In addition, I asked where exactly do I aim because I did not want to miss. He drew it out on the ground. I picked up my gun, aimed, and pulled the trigger. I asked did I hit him. My dad said I think so and I think he might be “Booner”. Then I got really excited. The deer had up walked up the mountain a little bit and then fell to the ground. I had hit him right in the lungs. Few minutes latter, I was looking at my first deer. Not a booner, but certainly a booner, jr. A four by four non-typical with eye guards. I shot him with my own reloads and the 95 grain noslers had done the job. I was so happy I did not know what to do. We gutted and boned him out. I am not sure who was smiling more, my dad or me; but I was really happy.

It had been a great five days with my dad. I could not have asked for a better fall break. When is the next deer hunt?

Great buck!! The first whitetail I had mounted wasn't quite that big and has always been a very special buck to me. Congrats, I know you can't wait for next year.
