2008 buck hot hot hot

Recommended Posts

Well this season started as all of them do with high hopes and endless weekends of 180 mile round trips to scout the area we would be hunting. The weather is not what we had hoped for but what the heck, we were deer hunting!

My buddy and I rolled in on Thursday morning and set up camp.

On the first morning we did not glass a single buck so in the evening we decided to try another spot. I had been glassing for about 30 minutes when I spun my tripod around to the North to look out in the flats. Much to my surpise I immediately picked up 2 bucks traveling across an open area. I hustled back to the Jeep and let my buddy know that I glassed up 2 bucks and that I thought we could get into range if they continued in the direction they were traveling.

We were on one side of a very large canyon and they were on the other side. We relocated the bucks and watched them bed, I ranged the hillside they were on at 378 yards. I figured the bucks were 30 - 40 yards past the point I had ranged so the shot would be right aroung 400 yards.

We tried for what seemed like forever to get my buddy set up on the biggest of the 2 bucks but he did not feel comfortable with the shot. The sun was setting and my other buddy (Scott aka SA AZ BOWHUNTER) knew how much I enjoy sqeezing the trigger on my Ruger .300 winmag so it didn't take much encouragement from him to get me to want to shoot at this buck. With the blessing of my buddy John, who also had a tag, I decided to try a shot on this guy.

I had a clear view of this buck, he was bedded facing right and looking towards us. I figured I would have to hold slightly high at 400 yards since my zero is 300 yards. I flipped out my Harris bipod and settled in for a headshot. I steadied my breathing and held at the top of the bucks head and sqeezed off the shot. The bullet impacted right behind him just over his head. The second shot I held right between his eyes and settled back into my rifle, I got out of it, took a breath and settled back into it and sqeezed the trigger releasing the 150 interbond. My buddy Scott was watching from his 15's and said "oh my gosh you nailed him!"

By th time we reached the buck it was well after dark but we walked right to the spot where he layed. The impact was dead center in the neck right on the throat patch.

Not my biggest buck but it is my farthest shot on a buck.

We ran into 2 bunches of packers, I called them both in to the USBP. I don't think they caught any of them.

It was a good hunt despite the 90+ degree weather and the drug smugglers. We did end up getting my buddy John a shot at a larger buck but he just couldn't close the deal.

Thanks for looking.

Nice looking buck Brian and a heck of a shot! Congrats. It's too bad that we have to put up with seeing smugglers and such on a deer hunt but just like you it won't keep me from going. Thanks for sharing your pics and story.
