maximus Report post Posted July 9, 2022 Question about loads, i tried some loads and have a question about difference on speed on different grain weight. this pictures are the shots from different loads. the rifle is Tikka T3 CTR 20 inch barrel. i started from 39 grains of h4350 with the Berger VLD hunting 130 grain and load up to 42.5 with increments of .5 grains, looks like the best group is 40.5 grains and the 2nd best is 42.5 grain , how much speed do i loose with 2 grain difference.? the pictures are in order 39 gr to 42.5 gr. all opinions are greatly appreciated. Thank you.
lancetkenyon Report post Posted July 10, 2022 Really hard to tell. Probably 100fps or so. I would personally not do load development without a chronograph however. A lot of info to be had when using one, not just velocity. ES, SD, and flat spots in charge weight changes.
PRDATR Report post Posted July 10, 2022 The MV velocity differences of even 150fps won't mean didly squat at 300 or 800 yards as far as energy goes. More is always better but,,, pick a bullet that will expand and understand what it will do at those ranges. Shoot some rounds into wet newspaper at those ranges. Load for accuracy first after you decide on a bullet.
