mattobertin Report post Posted October 22, 2008 I know there are a few hunting guides on here, I was wondering what does it take to get your guide license in AZ? Once you have a license can you guide for fishing as well? Just wondering...

firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted October 23, 2008 It takes $300, and a fairly decent knowledge of the regs. You can get a combo hunting/fishing guide license, but I am not sure how much that one is. I would assume G&F would want more for a combo, but I could be wrong. mattobertin Report post Posted October 23, 2008 Wow I had no idea it was that simple. I thought you had to take some sort of classes to be certified. Just a written test does'nt sound that bad. Thanks for the info guys. Anyone on here that guides as a primary source of income? Not that I would ever be able to do that but it would be nice to say the least! I mainly started thinking of guiding to get out scouting and hunting, and fishing more. I have enough money invested in fishing boats and hunting gear that my overhead would'nt be to bad to get started.

COUESAZ Report post Posted October 23, 2008 I stopped guiding when they jumped from 100 to 300 in one year.
Coues 'n' Sheep Report post Posted October 23, 2008 The hardest thing about getting a guides license in AZ is writing the check. That is a fact!!! Don't be Star Struck by the term "Guide" in Arizona, Matt.... It is just like my "Real" profession, construction.... Everyone is a Builder or Contractor.... Same with guiding... Guiding is great if you use it to feed your hunger, and help finance your habit.... but it is a meager living unless you do it big.... and plan on having no home life, to speak of.... That is what I figured. I would'nt quit my day job but I am in a position now where I own my own business and can actually have the time to scout and hunt so it would be more of a fun thing and learning experience for me than earning money. I am always helping on friends hunts (doing ALL the work! LOL!) and still enjoy that aspect of hunting and fishing despite the extra work which does not bother me. Thanks for the good info I really appreciate it!
DesertBull Report post Posted October 23, 2008 It can be rewarding and fun. You get go on hunts that you would probably never get drawn for. BUT....if you get the wrong client, it will be the most miserable time of your life.

Oh wait I had one of those the other day at work! And the week before that and the month before that! Oh wait I have them all of the time except we are'nt hunting.... Snapshot Report post Posted October 23, 2008 Being a guide is five jobs in one. You have to be a hunter, a pyschologist, babysitter, cook and a buddy.
firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted October 23, 2008 Basically, it can be a wash. Alot of it depends on your client. I have had clients not kill, and yet still be really good friends with them. I have had clients kill, and not hear from them ever again, after having a good time in camp. Most of the time IME, the client will offer a hand in helping around camp, but obviously is obligated. Make sure you can cook good in camp meals, or that would not be a happy client.. Unless of course you are seeing 100" deer every day, then it doesnt matter whats on the menu! .270 Report post Posted October 23, 2008 a guy can always work for uso. most o' their guides are high school drop outs who ain't never killed an elk. guidin' is ok if all your hunters are rich, non-jackasses who can walk like a bighorn and shoot straight, don't mind gettin' wood and cookin' know how to set up the tent and have a good 4x4. but i only had like one o' them. it's a miserable existence.
