Nat. Geo. Mapping software

Recommended Posts

I was looking at this mapping software in the CWT store and I have a few questions. I am not very good with computers so how tough is this program to learn how use for someone that is not very computer literate but capable of learning? Is it worth the money if you don't plan to use a gps with it? I mostly want it to just print up detailed topo maps of hunting spots so I can carry them with me in the field. Are the maps very detailed with forest rds., 4x4 trails, water holes, etc.?

I use it and like it.

Easy to use, easy to add GPS waypoints and save the set for a hunt unit. You can also download the hunt units pre-outlined. Then take the preoutlined map and mark the waterholes and save the set for that unit. Upload into your GPS, print your maps, and your all set. It also self updates maps when available for the area you are looking at.

Sometimes the roads are missing, or has roads which are closed. But thats the same with any mapping.

Two thumbs up from me.

I use the natl. GEO maps all the time. it is very simple to use and the topos are the same great quality of the 7.5 min topo quad maps that cost upwards of $7-8 a pop. the only limitation you will have is how good/big of printer you have. but the program is well worth the money.

I love mine as well. I use it all the time. It is really user friendly, and I dont have to file through a bunch of rolled up maps, I can just scroll across the whole state if I want. I also like that I can draw on, mark up and email maps when I need to. great investment, IMO.

I have used the program for years and love it. It does have roads on it, but not the USFS road numbers or land ownership boundaries. Best to also have a USFS map around to sort out stuff like that. But you can print as much or as little of a topo map as you want. And if you want, you can also buy tearproof, waterproof paper to print on so if you are printing a map of an area you expect to hunt again, the map will last and be around for years. Or, just use regular paper and print a new one whenever you need it. With my inkjet though, if you get the paper wet, the map ink smears, so something to keep in mind. I fold up my maps and put them in ziplock bags to keep them dry. Another advantage of the program is that you can print extras of the same map that you can give out to friends who are hunting with you in case you split up.

The other thing I like about the program is that it allows me to hook up my etrex gps and download my tracks and waypoints onto my map. That way, whenever I am out and about, all I have to do is have my gps on, and then hook it up when I get home and I can see on a map exactly where I had been. very cool.

Does anyone know if this software is compatible with windows Vista . My wife just bought it for me and the box says that it works with XP but does not say Vista. I don't want to open the box if it will not work with my system.

Thanks
