PJM Report post Posted October 17, 2008 Gents, I have a tikka M695 chambered in 270. I've been loading Nosler 130 and 150 gr ballistic tip bullets with IMR4831. I'm looking at loading the Barns TSX, but their web site does not have reload data using IMR 4831. Has anyone reloaded the Barns bullets with 4831? Please share your recipes. firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted October 18, 2008 If you are reloading for the 130 BT, back of 3 grains from max, and work up until you find your max. The TSX is supposed to be able to run at higher pressure with out pressure signs (hence, allowing for more powder and speed). That is the design behind the grooves in the bullet. m gardner Report post Posted October 18, 2008 Here are some loads from www.hodgdon.com website. I use their 110 grain TSX bullet ahead of 50 grains of Varget. It's fast and flat. Varget appears to give the same velocity as 4831 from the data. It's a favortie powder of mine and has proven to be consisitent and accurate. I believe the grooves are there so that the bullet has less bearing surface so that you can attain greater velocity with the same pressures. It's hard to engrave a monometal bullet into the rifling. PJM Report post Posted October 20, 2008 Guy's thanks for the reply. I finally got through to Barns and got info on the loads they recommend using IMR 4831. Barns suggests loads ranging 53 - 56.5 gr for the 140 gr bullet. I'm loading some rounds this week so I'm going to try 55 gr of IMR. I'll bring my chrono to the range and check the muzzle velocity. I saw a antelope buck hit with a 150 @ 3600 fps (muzzle) and it totally destroyed the guy's cape- entry hole was pie- plate sized! My buddy used one on his buck in 24A a couple of years ago and at 400 yds, was picture perfect! Are you hording buckets of IMR 4831? There are better powders these days for hunting that are less temperature sensitive and will probably give you 50fps higher velocities. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
m gardner Report post Posted October 21, 2008 The Hornady SST's are some of the most accurate wind resistent bullets I've shot in my 270 win. But on the downside, they aren't great game bullets. We shot some small to large deer with them and there are better bullets to kill critters with. I used H1000 powder and the 150 grainer to shoot prarie dogs at extreme long ranges. Benbrown Report post Posted October 21, 2008 The 140 grain SSTs shot really well in my wife's .280, as did the 117 grain SSTs in my .257 AI, but we both switched to partitions because the SSTs just ruin too much meat. PJM Report post Posted October 21, 2008 Guys, I just got into reloading and my buddy who hooked me up with and RCBS set up always has used 56-57 gr IMR4831 with Sierra 130 BTS. Being a newbie at this I've taken his wise words and loaded with 4831. What recipes are you guys using? Were have you guys found good deals on reloading supplies? m gardner Report post Posted October 24, 2008 Look at Midway USA and Graff and Sons for deals on reloading stuff. The cheapest I've found here is Sportsman's Warehouse. Try some Hodgdon Varget powder. I like it here because it isn't very sensitive to the temperature extremes. I liked IMR 7828 SSC when I lived in Colorado but I get point of impact changes here with it. Hodgdon has loads for Barnes bullets on their website. They own IMR powder now too. youngbuck Report post Posted October 24, 2008 Sportsmans warehouse has alot more reloading stuff than BPS and Cabelas. Better prices too. Every once in a while they will be outa something. For a while it was 180gr .30 accubonds, another time it was Varget, and another time for a while it was primers. I order abunch of my reloading stuff off of www.midsouthshooterssupply.com.
