San Carlos coues?

Recommended Posts

Hi all. As always, I've been looking for a hunt I can afford, and actually have a quality experience. I would love to try old mexico, but just can't afford it. I have drawn a couple tags in the past and had no luck , so I'm getting kind of anxious. I looked up the costs of the San Carlos hunts. Pretty pricy, but maybe obtainable if everything worked out for me. I looked at the A, B, C hunts in January for $1500. Does anyone know what kind of realistic expectations one could get from one of these hunts? Is there high success and does the area produce big deer? Are there any ideas on a hunt cheaper that would produce a good deer, maybe 90" plus? Thanks for your help, advise and opinions.

Hey Grim,

A,B,and C are all great areas, just spend sometime scoutin scoutin them and they'll payoff in the long run. Chances are higher for taking a 90+ incher or bigger

the farther you get back into the hunt areas. Pick up a map.

Unit A above ~3500ft mazanita/beargrass and scrub oak with JP/cedar stands.

The higher elev. ponderosa and oaks. Can be tough to glass upper area.

Unit B Blue River and Warm Spr. areas pretty open grassy areas. Great oppurtunity for glassing long distances (1-2 miles) can cover alot ground.

Unit C Same as all of the above.

And again all areas are great spots, ain't none better than the other. That my personnel opinion. Obtain a map and kinda a get a feel for the areas. Should you decide to hunt SC good luck!!! :D

Grim, I've hunted San Carlos the past 9 years. I've taken several nice bucks, my biggest was a 109, 3 by 4 in unit A, year 2002. I've hunted all of the units A, B, C in November and January. All of my January hunts have been unit A. This year I took a 96" buck in November from unit B. I would recommned the res for the price over Mexico. I've hunted Mexico once and killed a 114, but the res is a much simpler hunt to organize. The price is high but the quality is great.

San Carlos is a great place to hunt. I have hunted A, B, and C and really you can get a large buck in any unit. Personally I think I prefer unit B because it lends itself to glassing a bit more than the other units. You stand a real good chance of getting a 90+ buck on an SC tag.

You can read some of the hunt stats from San Carlos in the "Where to Hunt" section of this website. Here is the link to the San Carlos page

I put together some comprehensive stats when I was the biologist out there. We gave that info out to hunters to help them decide on whether to buy a tag and which unit to hunt. That is the older data though (95-99) and there is a link on that info page for it. Things don't change much though. Good weather years you have a better chance at a big buck. I also have posted some stats from the early 2000's from another biologist.

Hope that helps!

Amanda
