34A question

Recommended Posts

Went scouting today and drove the 143 road in about 15 miles. The country looked good and I even glassed up a couple of bedded does. My question is how will the hunting pressure be in here. I have a 10/24 tag. The past couple of seasons I hunted the northern part of the unit around rosemont junction and helvetia and was really turned off by the amount of hunters I was tripping over..even while way way off the roads......they were like ants everywhere. I was able to punch a tag in 06 but not 07 and the crowds were a real turn off. I hunted the 72 road (temporal canyon) in 05 and will never hunt in there again...worst crowds I have ever seen......so anybody know about the pressure off the 143 road past the Solero ranch on the NFS land?? Heavily hunted??

Not 100% sure of the road you are talking about, but if there is a road there then yeah, there will be alot of hunters there! 34a is a heavily hunted unit just like 33, and the 36's!

You're right, the 143 is hammered. I can glass it from my house. There will be a camp at every pullout along it's entire length during all three early hunts. Still a good option for camping though, as you can access alot of country from there.

Both sides of the Salero will be packed. Usually 4-6 camps from salero to patagonia and three times that from salero to the bull springs turn.

There are about 6 major roads in the unit that should equal about 100 hunters per road.

Very few people will be more than a mile from the road.

Thanks for the info...I was only considering it for a plan "B" if my new "secret spot" I ""discovered"" doesn't pan out or I am pinched for time. I'll for sure stay out of there opening weekend...maybe save it for a middle of week hunt......

Great area...but also very popular....get away from roads...Hog Canyon was a favorite of mine for years but has not seemed to hold the numbers lately...you access it from the Gardner Canyon road..I think it is the dirt road just after the second cattle guard...lots of places to glass.

As a general rule, every mile you put between yourself and a road, your competation will reduce by 80%... This rule works all over the West...not just 34A. You just have to be willing and able to do the work. Good luck and shoot straight! D.D.

Hey...just checking to see how your hunt went. I have a 34A Nov 28th tag. I've been down there 3-4 times scouting...it all looks sooo good, hard to know where to begin. I'm hoping that most the hunters blow off the hunt with the economy and all....ya i know, fat chance...but I can always hope. I had taken a look at the 143 road and some of the areas just as you get back onto Nat forest the second time...thought that was plan A...maybe I should re-evaluate...how was it on your hunt? Thanks

thequest,

Had a great hunt...but never set foot on the 143 road. I stayed close to home, Corona de Tucson, and hunted the northern side. My son and I both shot deer by the second day of the hunt.....I will try out that 143 road for the Jan bow hunt though...really looks nice. Good luck to ya!
