KGAINES Report post Posted October 9, 2008 I hate the thought of these cameras everywhere, to me it is Big Brother taking advantage of the people. With the money spent on these systems and their operators they could be hiring more officers and put a human presence on the street, not more cameras to monitor everyone. Every intersection has a camera, right now most are not for law enforcement, but I was told that they are to monitor for accidents, and to look for vehicles during amber alerts. That worries me, I have a little less of a problem with the red light cameras, but it is still not a human. When a drunk can drive down the road swerving all over and go right past one of these cameras with no problem and someone going slightly faster than everyone else goes by they get a ticket. They need to hire more officers and get rid of the electronics, we are all on the Governments Trail Cams. What are your Ideas, I haven't got a speeding ticket from one, but in the last few days I have seen these things everywhere.
DesertBull Report post Posted October 9, 2008 They are nothing more than ATM machines for the Gov't. They should be illegal. The state (billions in debt) just started using them on state hiways. They are not for your safety, they are to raise money.
firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted October 9, 2008 Ever seen how bright those things are at night? I am waiting for one of them to cause an accident, then they will taken down after the giant law suit the person files!
COUESAZ Report post Posted October 10, 2008 I may end up the only one that fills this way. But If you break the law you should get busted for it. I have been given 1 radar ticket and one red light ticket. You know what. I was speeding and running a red light so i was breaking the law.
silenthunter686 Report post Posted October 10, 2008 I was getting gas at Wilmot and 22nd St. down here in Tucson the other night, and it looked like the beginning of a boxing match with a bunch of cameras!
firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted October 10, 2008 I think the red light ones are good, but the speed ones... How do you know they are properly calibrated? etc etc etc... All it will take is one accident caused by the extremly bright lights! Currently, I drive a freight truck for work. I go through several intersections in Tucson that have the red light camera they they work like a friggin charm!

I do agree that it will be a money maker but if it can keep people from speeding and help people pay attention, you never know, someday it might be the reason it saves a loved one. I think Casey is right on the money. Those things are dang bright. Sooner or later I see it causing an accident.
KGAINES Report post Posted October 10, 2008 There are more laws broken each day of much worse crimes and these cameras don't do a thing to prevent that, what they do is create revenue for each city, county, or the state, and then that is taken by elected officials and used for something other than law enforcement. If they took the initial funds that they used to buy these cameras and hired Police officers they can enforce traffic laws and respond to other crimes. I have gotten a red light ticket from one of the cameras the circumstances that caused it wasn't my fault, but I paid the ticket and had to go to traffic school because AZ requires any red light violation to attend the school regardless of paying the fine, but they don't tell you that prior to you paying the ticket, why because you could just go to the school in the first place and only pay once, instead they make you pay twice. I may be mistaken, but I was told that elected state officials can't be held up by the police and aren't issued traffic violations while congress is in session, if that is the case they could care less about how this affects anyone. I guess these vans that the police set up on the sides of the road must be pretty boring for the officer that does that, I heard one was pulled over for driving eratically and he was found to be drunk, if I had gotten a ticket that day I would have raised heck for that ticket. ichiban43 Report post Posted October 10, 2008 The laws need to be enforced and this is another tool--welcome to the world of technology. But--they should never be used to replace the DPS. The trouble is--at least with the fixed cameras--people do 90--slow down when they approach the location--and then speed back up--so, anybody who gets caught didn't know the area--or is just plain dumb. They just provide an income for the state--and the contractor who operates the system. Remember--the statewide use of these was to help Janet balance the budget. But nothing will slow you down more, at least for awhile, than getting written up by a real live cop. So--they might help some--people don't like getting hit in the wallet with both a fine and rise in insurance premiums. At least when a cop tickets you--you will slow down right now--with the camera--most likely not--at least until you get it in the mail.
JMP Report post Posted October 10, 2008 even if it is an atm machine, i'd rather see this than a new or increased tax. i rarely exceed 70mph anyway, so it doesn't bother me.
bowsniper Report post Posted October 10, 2008 I have heard that you are not liable to pay the speeding photo radar ticket until you are formally served in person with the ticket. Most people just pay it when it comes in the mail, so they don't bother spending the money to serve people with the ticket in person. Can anyone confirm this? For any ticket to be valid it must be served by a police officer or serving officer. You do not have to pay the ticket in the mail or show up at court until that is done. Typically the court has officers with the specific purpose of serving people that recieve photo radar tickets. Ive chucked two and im still good. One was by prescott's new ones, i figured for goin 32 in a 25 they wouldnt send an officer all the way to phoenix to serve me. I was right.
tommat Report post Posted October 10, 2008 If they do take the trouble to serve you, they add on $$$ to the fine to pay for the server...don't recall the exact amount but it was a lot...like almst = to the original fine.
KGAINES Report post Posted October 10, 2008 If I read it correctly, you pay the fine online for the freeway tickets, there are no points taken from you, your license can't be suspended from a photo speeding ticket, I read a law that was passed last year that makes it illegal for your insurance to go up from one of these tickets, so the only thing that it does is fine you, and if that is the only action taken it seems that it is allowing you to drive over the speed limit if you can pay the fines with no other penalties. I think that since SAFETY is the big concern you should have to pull over at special DUI stations every twenty miles or so and swipe your license and blow into a breathalyzer, if you are drunk you will be charged immediately and have to wait to be arrested, oh you should have to pay for the fuel that the officer has to use to come and get you at the checkpoint, plus the towing of your vehicle. There should also be GPS devices in all cars that are linked to some sort of government device that will issue you a citation for speeding, illegal lane change, taking off to fast(exhibition of speed), illegal u-turns, illegal turns anywhere, running red lights, tailgating, not coming to a complete stop, merging across the gore strip on the freeways, driving to slow, nad failure to signal. It should also be illegal to own a vehicle that can exceed 75 miles per hour, I am pretty sure that is the max speed limit in the United States, if you are passing someone and exceed 75 you are still speeding, so if anyone gets a speeding ticket it isn't their fault it is the manufacturers fault, unless it is on a surface street. If a person gets pulled over on one of these freeways by a patrol officer you could almost use video evidence or Lack of to be exact to get out of the ticket, your honor I just drove past six cameras and didn't get a single ticket, but this officer says I am speeding, your honor someones radar is not calibrated correctly, either I get a photo ticket from the cameras, which I didn't or I am innocent, and if your cameras are off in their calibration you need to refund everyone else that got a ticket that day. What would happen there the judge wouldmake you pay most likely, or he would throw the ticket out and undermine the officer that pulled you over, after all he is human.
