CHD Report post Posted December 30, 2004 Dang it boys and gals. I am fairly unhappy today. Just don't know if I wanna see tomorrow. I really wanna die. Had my 22 late Coues deer tag, which is fairly hard to draw. Couldn't wait to get away from here the last 2 weeks of the year to hunt the beautiful, magnificent, challenging, fantastic, neat, Coues deer. Had to fight the bosses to get away. Even had to threaten to quit.......... but I got it done. Had a great spot researched and picked out in the lower country. Just couldn't wait to get down there. Unfortunately, I breathed the wrong air 6 weeks ago. Must have been my fault for breathing. I don't know which breath did me in, or the %$#*& that contaminated it. But I got the dreaded whooping cough. Been an almost epidemic around here this fall. Bad sheet. I hacked until my throat was raw and needed a pain killer. I hacked up my meals. I hacked up my breakfast all over my new truck and my clothes, and had to go back inside and change. I hacked up all over my carpet (several times). I didn't break a rib hacking, but I know 2 here that did. It still is several weeks (or months) from being over, with me. This sheet can go on for months, I am told. The doc has given me 3 different anti-biotics, which are bad enough themselves. I live for hunting these wonderful deer. I had a really good fall going so far, and was sure to harvest a great Coues deer buck in 22. But..................Pertussis rained on my parade. As a result of this unbelievable, untimely horsesheet, I can't go to Arizona to pursue the beautiful, magnificent, challenging, fantastic, neat, Coues deer this year. I am defeated and crushed..............and don't wanna live no more. I have had it with health problems -vs- hunting. I have lined up the following options for myself. Let me know which one you think I should do. 1) Slit my wrists (I have the razor blades lined up on my kitchen counter) 2) Hack myself to death 3) Crawl into a dark corner and die 4) Give up hunting deer altogether 5) Take up model railroading as a hobby (this looks like fun!) 6) Hire somebody to shoot my Coues bucks for me, and then claim them as mine 6) Relax, take my pills, and be grateful for life, and look forward to next year! Which do you folks think I should choose??

crazyaboutcoues Report post Posted December 30, 2004 CHD my heart bleeds for you..... I can relate to your situation...last year Scott Adams and I drew the late hunt in 27/28. I got the flu the week before my hunt. Man did it bite, I still tried hunting opening morning but ended up making it worse. I finally got to hunt the last three days of a two week hunt. Can you imagine trying to keep up with Scott and Craig just after the flu...I remember Craig asking Scott if he thought the elevation was getting to me, as to why I was sucking eggs so bad. Hang in there, it might be a blessing in disguise.....Come to think of it, your better off just standing in front of a Rolling semi. he he
Chef Report post Posted December 30, 2004 Tough dealings my friend. I do hope you don't suffer much more than you already have. Without our health, we have nothing. Take care of yourself and the hills will be there for another day. Get better soon, Chef
az4life Report post Posted December 31, 2004 chd 2 years ago I was in a similar spot. Got the flu after opening weekend in the rain and snow. Flu turned ugly and got an inner ear infection. That gave me ear nerve damage and a bout of bell's palsey. The 7th nerve controls the left side of your face. The 7th nerve goes through the ear so The whole left side of my face went dead. No muscle control so it was near impossible to even close my left eye. That iThat really sucked. I Went to the DR and got some MAJOR Anti biotics and various other supplmetnts and went on mega doses of C, B complex and B12. The last weekend I went out and tried to hunt with the chest cold and inner ear problems in their final stages ( I thought) I had a shot for a buck but could not take it quick enough due to the watery eyes. I should not have been hiking around but y'know I waited all year and I wanted my shot. It was really not a good choice. I went home empty and had that upper resp. crud and chest congestion for nearly a month more. 2 weeks or so later I got over the nerve damage but likely would have been sooner if I followed the Dr orders. Take it easy, next year is coming.

Rembrant Report post Posted January 1, 2005 Chris, Don't kill yourself. You are a credit to Western deer hunting culture. I won't rag you about burning a tag. I had already figured you weren't gonna make it due to the work situation mentioned in previous posts. I like the relax, be grateful for life, and look forward to the rest of your life option. That's some of the best stuff in life; a new day every 24 hours, new years, other chances and future campains. Get better, Mike
CHD Report post Posted January 5, 2005 Thanks for the responses guys. Az4life, sounds like some bad crud you had at another 'wrong' time. No, I'm not gonna kill myself (it was just my sarcasm......again, lol), but I am fairly well aggravated. Aaaarrrrggghh!!! I can draw another 22 tag. And I will hunt Coues bucks many more times. But what if it was a once-in-a-lifetime tag? What if it was a $6,000 landowner elk tag? What if I had saved for 5 years and it was a $14K stone sheep hunt in B.C.? What if you have a car wreck the week before one of these? Holy cow. I've only lost 4 hunts over the years due to health problems. My Coues deer hunt in AZ in 2001 ended on day 2 with bad sore throat/cold/flu in cold weather I was camping in. I was seeing good bucks, too. I went into Globe and got a room and medicine to sleep in warmth in hopes I would get the upper hand on it in a couple days and could salvage the last 3 days. But it quickly turned into double-ear infections also and took 5 weeks to get over it. I think I caught that crud by eating in a restauarant in Holbrook on the way down. This incident made me develop a policy of shying away from restaurants (and germs!) before a hunt. I'm not kidding! I also now take some erythromycin with me. In 1989, I shot a decent muley in northern Nevada in the Jarbidge country on the Idaho border. I lived in Elko at the time. This was in lower rocky canyon country. I drew the same tag in 1990, an area 7 October hunt. In late summer scouting, I finally spotted the nocturnal buck that was making all those big tracks. He was a huge, wide typical 35" or so wide. I set up my 10 day hunt and brought enough stuff to stay the hunt without going into town. I wanted that buck bad! On day 2 I awoke to a sore ankle because I overdid it on day 1. It didn't hurt too bad, so I forced it and hunted that day on it, limping the entire way. On day 3 I awoke to a fully inflamed ankle in great pain that I couldn't move at all. Turned out it was Achillies Tendonitis. I had to pull the plug on the hunt. I was just crushed. I had 2 other hunts that fall that were jeopardized but a month until the next one allowed me time to heal. Achillies tendonitis, happens a lot to hunters. I wear cowboy boots, and they lead to tight tendons that get stretched (and tear) when I get in my lower-heal hunting boots. I now stretch my calves a lot before hunting season. I got Achillies Tendonitis in the other foot during a muley hunt in Colorado in 1993. Mostly due to walking incorrectly due to a recent knee surgery. I had to shoot a lesser buck on day 5 of a 7 day hunt that was getting better each day. I packed that buck out on my back and really inflamed that tendon. I also had a December Coues hunt in AZ 29 three weeks later and my tendon was still so inflamed I couldn't walk down the street much less hike and climb in the Chiricauhua's. Had to call that one off too. Another Coues disappointment. For some reason, Arizona Coues tags trigger deal-breaking health problems in me. Maybe I should try New Mexico, lol. I sure hope this trend ends soon. But, the reality is that I have been incredibly fortunate to have had many super hunts all over the wonderful rocky mtn west for the last 30 years. Most never get the opportunities I have had. Anyway, a few more stories for ya'll. I'll survive this Pertussis. Take care.
Redman Report post Posted January 5, 2005 CHD, Glad your sprits are up, I thought about your post this weekend while hunting. I was going to suggest taking out a new credit card and booking a Mexico hunt, then discharge it in bankruptcy, that would have to be better than killing yourself, when I first read your post I thought you were not serious, but then I thought what if?
