billrquimby Report post Posted October 1, 2008 just wondering if anyone has hunted the magee ranch in the sierrita mountains. and do u have any other suggestions for coues in 36A My wife is related to a branch of the Magees, and I hunted that mountain a lot with them in the 1950s-60s-70s, but not at all since then. The best bucks used to come from a couple of canyons near what they called "Lone Star Cabin" up on top. I shot my best whitetail from that area on a cone-shaped hill they called "Sugarloaf." It was pretty close to where they're mining now, so the hill may be long gone. If I were going to hunt that area again, especially with optics, I think I'd try the low but tough little hills on the far southern end of the main mountain. The Magees I hunted with called it "Bee Mountain," but I don't know if that's the same name you'll find on topo maps. Bill Quimby

WHT_MTNMAN Report post Posted October 2, 2008 I've hunted it quite a bit.. Unless you know someone with a key the gates are all locked. The mine used to be open but the last few years they had it shut down because someone shot a hole in the window of a mine loader, so they blocked access. It is tough steep country. I used to walk miles up those roads to glass everyday. Lots and lots of does but buck numbers have been down the last few years. There is good buck taken out of there every year but IMO it is not as common place as it used to be. The north side of the sierrita mtns have relativly few deer, i've glassed up a few lions the southern part has the most illegal traffic, lots of illegals and trash. Good luck with your hunt. The black hills have some good deer numbers but alot of people in the early hunts.
mcgrew24 Report post Posted October 2, 2008 which hunt do you have i drew a left over late november tag. i know someone who lives on the ranch so access isnt a problem, i was just wondering about deer population and where to hunt up there. So far ive been out there once and saw alot of doe just cruising around on the ranger checking the area out, but have yet to do some serious scouting. just curious to here other opinions on where to hunt that unit because i usually hunt 36b. Tines Report post Posted October 2, 2008 Don't let the "key-to-the-ranch" thing give you the impression you'll have your very own coues deer haven to yourself. You'll be surprised at the hunter density in there...
georgenoto Report post Posted October 2, 2008 Not sure of the name of the old ranch I go through. Off Arivaca Road I think its at k17 or so. a couple miles in there is a ranch on teh left. Go through the gate and continue on. Good road. Rough hiking. lions and deer so get a lion tag. Its also one of the best quail spots I ahve ever been in.
