Recommended Posts

Who else is getting ready to do some archery pig and deer hunting and where? I got drawn for archery javelina in 36 A,B,C so I am taking an archery deer tag too. I have been checking out the forum pretty regular and all the successes I am seeing from the Dec rifle and archery hunts has me dying to get back down south.

sczoner have you guys gone down to your archery hunt area yet?

Good luck to you TREESTANDMAN! I really don't care if I shoot a pig. It's an excuse to go hunt bucks. Now next month my son has a jr. javelina hunt in 36A/C and then I will be motivated to get him his first animal.

I love huntings Javies. I especially enjoy blowing that varmint call and having them rush at you. If anyone wants to trade or donate pig meat for deer or bear meat let me know. If a javelina is field dressed correctly, nothing beats the meat.

Fourth year in a row in 37b. Theres a ton of pigs and some huge desert muleys, it's always a good time!!

I normally cook the backstraps in a crock pot and make the rest into jerky. I was wondering if anyone had tried the pit method, I've heard it was great.

I've never pit bbq'd pig but I've also heard it was great. I just marinate the meat in big apple bbq sauce and cook it ouside on the grill. My family and extended family loves the stuff. I'd like to try pit bbq'd my next pig.

I'll be heading to 31 and 32 for pigs the first four days. Then over to 29 to hunt coues deer for the next five days. Hope to go three years in a row in January on deer. Anybody been in 29 lately wondering how the rut is going down there? I just can't handle eating those pigs. After I get the smell of them in my nose and on my hands, that is all I can smell for a month. I have some friends that just love them so they get them if we happen to kill any. Good luck to everyone.

Sunday, I was in 34a and right at day break I glassed up a 4x4 that probably would score around 175-180" he was with about 30 does and some smaller bucks that he kept chasing away. I was about 190 yards away, and every time I would try and get closer one of his does would spot movement. I finally got to within about 140-150 yards away when a truck pulled up. I was probably 300 yards away from a 4x4 trail, 2 hunters got out and one started to rattle at the bucks. The big bruiser stopped where he was and turned around and started to walk back at the 2 hunters, only thing, his truck was right in plain view, the buck stopped at an ocotillo and started to thrash the bush. He and his does finally thought there was too much excitement and moved furter down into this wash that was thick with mesquite. That was the last I saw him, hopefully I will be back out there and try my luck with him once again

Tuesday afternoon I was in unit 33 and glassed up a nice 4x4 that probably would score around 155"-160" he was 24 to 26" wide, and he was bedded on a side of a ridge, in the wide open. I was probably 500-600 yards away on the oposite side of the canyon so I needed to cross over to the same ridge he was on and try a stalk from behind. As I started to cross the canyon I glassed once more where they were at and noticed they got up and started to run up the hill at full speed. I was thinking to myself there is no way they could of heard me or smelled me. I was hoping I could head them off at the top of the ridge where they would cross, as I got there, another hunter was walking right towards me from the opposite end of the canyon, he had not seen me and I waved for him to come over to me. He was the one who spooked the deer  , as I got closer to him I noticed he had a crossbow cocked and ready to go. I mentioned to him that the crossbow was illegel, he said no, it is not, it is legal and his hunt was going on (rifle hunt). I called my brother after we talked who had access to operation game thief number and the person on the phone from game and fish said there is a hunt in that area for either deer and it was a rifle hunt so he was hunting leagally. Well good luck to everyone, and happy new years . Hopefully I will be able to get out there tomorrow afternoon, have to work so all my hunts will be in the afternoon only.

couesdiehard,

we haven't made it down yet. planning on hunting MLK weekend. We have units 27-32 so quite a wide range to pick from. Not 100% sure, but I think were planning to hunt near Kansas Settlement I believe we have some permission from some farmers in the area. Wish we would have put in for the 36 ABC hunt as I'm more familiar with the area.

We'll also have archery deer tags.

Anybody with any suggestions for these units?

Pigs make good Chorizo, I grind it with a little pork roast, or fat, mix in the Chorizo mix, let it sit overnight in the fridge and then wrap 1lb loafs in freezer paper. Not bad breakfast burritos.

If your going to make chorizo, don't waste pig meat doing it. Use bear or deer meat. The pig meat is too good bbq'd to make chorizo or sausage.

Leavin in a couple hrs for 36b...2 days to nix the tag soup. Where I've been hunting, the carp are herded up but not the w/t's. Hope that changed w/ this front going thru. Saw a couple big carp in there...herd buck wouldn't get off his hill, I strolled past in the open at 75 yds and they all just stared. He had 8 does w/ him. Why can't a w/t do that for me? Then sat is time to let the air outta the rats! I'm taking my helmet cam outta my race car and see if I can video a hunt. good luck all!
