azryan Report post Posted September 21, 2008 Cody hunted opening weekend through Tuesday and had no luck. The rut was weak to say the least in some places. While the bulls were going crazy just across the street. The bulls where we were hunting were not talking very much, if at all on some days. It made for a very tough hunt. I decided to head up with Cody on Friday night and we were going to give it another go. Cody had some friends coming in really late on Saturday night to help. So we hunted some places closer to where we were going to meet his friends. We met up with his brother that night and discussed a game plan for the next day. His brother was all over the unit the past week and was not having much luck. So we headed in to an area where we knew there were a few bulls to hunt. Saturday morning was not very productive. We slept in and just took it easy that morning. Late morning rolled around and we walked around in area that his brother had an encounter with a good bull a week prior. It turned out to be a good choice. At 11:30am we heard our first bugle of the day. The bull was screaming. We got into his cows and some spikes, but it was just too thick. The bull was 40 yards from Cody raking a tree, but there was no shot opportunity. So we decided to back out of the area and hunt them in the evening. We then went back into town and rested up for the evening. That evening found us at the edge of a cut where the elk were bedding. We were just sitting and listening and we both started to doze off, then Cody smacks me and said the bull bugled. We heard him again and made a decision to slowly work towards him. The wind was perfect and we slowly made our way to the bull. We then stopped and listened to get the bull’s location again. We heard something walking right towards us; we could see it was a bull. He was coming right at us. Cody wanted to shoot a six point and this bull met the standards. We stood there watching the bull feed up to us. The bull was at 18 yards on the other side of a tree and a few bushes. Cody drew back and the bull walked out into the open. The bull was 12 yards away after he cleared the trees. Cody then shot and hit the bull hard. It was a perfect shot. The bull ran around us and died 70 yards above us. It is not the biggest bull in the world, but with an opportunity like that he could not pass it up.
Redman Report post Posted September 21, 2008 Nice job, it is amazing how the bulls in such close proximity can be going crazy while others are not doing anything. Redman
