Antelope hunt

I went on my 2nd antelope hunt in eastern NM with 2 other guys that frequent this site and another guy. It was even more of a blast than the 1st hunt. All of us took good goats and I'm sure the other 2 will post theirs. My buck was just over 15 inches tall with pretty good mass. Took him at 420 yards with my .270 wsm 130 grn. Tim aka Tam took a very nice 16" lope as well as Greg aka couestaxi's beatiful non-typical.

The 2nd one is several inches larger than the first one.

Treestandman.....wow, two years in a row to hunt goats and both successful. Thanks for sharing.

 

Tam.....that is one neat lookin goat and will make an excellent mount.

I didn't see Mike shoot his buck so I can't really say anything about that story. I was with Greg when he shot his and let me just say I was really impressed with a couple of different things. First, the 190 Berger VLD's really did there job! The shot was 350 yards or so and the bullet entered (you can see the entrance hole in the pic's) and it never exited the animal. That Bucks shoulder was mush! You couldn't feel any bone, just felt like a sponge. His chest cavity was soup with his heart destroyed and split in half. The second thing I was really impressed with is how much time and caution Greg spent cleaning off blood and skinning out his animal. He had a roll of paper towels which he used to wipe the blood off the cape so the buck would look good in pictures and so the blood wouldn't stain the hair for his life size mount. Greg actually uses a scalpel to skin and clean his animals and I've never seen such care taken while skinning and gutting. Kinda made me feel like a hack!

 

I'll post more on the story later, I'm just waiting for my buddy to send me the rest of the pictures.

The story of Gregs buck.....

 

Due to a busy work schedule Greg didn't leave town at the same time as us and didn't get to do any scouting the day before the hunt. As the rest of us were scouting about mid day we glassed an area that was right on the edge of our ranch and the area was loaded with antelope! As we're looking at this group of antelope just across the ranch border Russ says "thats the largest cutter I've ever seen... It's huge!" Well after a little closer evaluation we determined that it wasn't the antelope's cutter, it was his horn sticking out the side of his head instead of the top like a normal goat. The problem was that this goat was a mile or so off our ranch. Later that day I called Greg and told him that we found a real "Freak" and Greg immediatly said "I want him". Once Greg arrived and the actual hunt started Greg passed up some nice goats because he really wanted the Freak. On the afternoon of the first day I headed out with Greg to an area about two miles to the west of where we had seen the Freak overlooking some draws where we had also seen another large buck. After finding a large herd and looking over one potential shooter and passing we decided to move up the road. As we were moving along we came across the large buck from the day before that was massive and had prongs that flared out to the side. he was a shooter for sure! Greg hurried up for a shot and missed clean. As we were looking for any sign of a hit we saw him off to the east so we followed in hot persuit. Just as we crested the ridge where we had last seen him we saw a single buck feeding in the bottom and we were sure it was him. Greg put up his bino's and said "I think it's the Freak?" one quick glance from my spotter and I confirmed it was in fact the Freak! Greg immediatly sat down and got ready to shoot off his bi-pod but the grass was to tall to shoot from the sitting position so we set up my tripod and used the Outdoorsmans pistol grip as a gun rest so Greg could stand and shoot. As soon as the buck turned broadside Greg let the 190 VLD rip from his 300 RUM and the buck was his. Once again the Berger VLD's worked there magic with a bullet sized entrance hole and nothing but soup on the inside. Greg is the owner of Trails End Taxidermy in Gilbert and was so happy with his Freak buck that he decided to mount it lifesize. Congrats to Greg on a real cool looking animal.
