azcouesandelk Report post Posted September 11, 2008 Well I have never run in a marathon or a 1/2 marathon but in high school our baseball coach got mad at us and we ran 10 miles! I am thinking about attempting a 1/2 marathon next year, let me know how it goes for you.
Kilimanjaro Report post Posted September 11, 2008 Thanks for all the replys, gents!! Tyson, I know what ya mean about not exactly being built like a Kenyen! I'm 6'3" and 205!! I've already started out my training, but if I feel that I'm just not gonna make the cut on distance, I'll do the 1/2 marathon on this race and shoot for the full monty in the Jan Rock&Roll Race in PHX.. That'll give me that extra month of running. But for now, I'm shooting for the whole enchilada. I've climbed some BIG mountains in my day(and plan on doing many more), but this may be the most sado masacist thing I've ever done to myself!! Torturing one's self for self gratification takes a special breed indeed!!!!! Mountain climbers, marathoners, tirathaoners, etc. all take great pleasure in torturing theirselves!! Why do I want to do this again??

Our HS conditioning coach was a former Marine drill sargeant.. The maddest we ever got him was worth about 7 miles... 4 of them in pads!!! (no helmet though, thank god!) Scott, if you dont make it, I want Virgil, Your Swaros and tripod and the .300wsm and the Beretta... While were at it, I guess I'll take the .410 too Bonnie can have the rest Just Kidding!!! Snapshot Report post Posted September 11, 2008 The last time I ran a 5 minute mile was fickett junior high, 1976. They made us do what they called a cross country run of 2 1/2miles every two weeks. It's funny how many kids didn't show up to class on cross country day, so they started doing it randomly so nobody would know when. Most of the kids walked it anyway. I always tried to better my elapsed times, but I didn't have a beer belly back then
SilentButDeadly Report post Posted September 11, 2008 +1 on the body glide +1 again on the shoes -- go to the Running Shop or Fleet Feet or Performance Footwear and have them size you. +1 again on shorts -- I've got a pair of nike training shorts (got them from coaching rugby at UA -- same style as the football shorts) that have a pair of underwear liners in them, and the crotch seam is tight up high so the seams don't rub between your thighs. I don't have chafing problems up higher, but I hear 'bloody nipples' are common, yikes! As for doing the 1/2 vs the Full, like Stanley said, its totally mental. The pace you run for a marathon is not the same pace you run 5 or 10 miles at. Start slow for the 1st hour and try and go faster the second hour. For me 10 minute miles is standard pace. Kilimanjaro Report post Posted October 19, 2008 Well, considering how my week had started off(the whole raging food poising, ER vistit, etc.), I had already written off even giving the race a chance this weekend.. BUT, although not even close to 100% yet, I felt good enough to keep my word and headed to Bisbee this morning and ran in the Bisbee1000. I completed the race in 49min.. It is basically a 5K race that is comparable to a 10K with all the stairs and the elevation. Felt great to be there, but I sure would have loved to have ran it at 100% well.. I'm still on track for the marathon in Dec, though!!
