Recommended Posts

Have any of my fellow CWT'ers ever run a marathon?? I got a wild hair up my butt yesterday and signed up for the Tucson Marathon here on Dec 7th. I've never run one before, but figured what the hey... I'm not getting any younger and its a great way to stay in great shape. I run alot, but nothing like this!!

I hear that they can get really addicting and are a load of fun and the company is really good.. I guess I'll find out here in a few months!! It starts up in Oracle and goes (downhill!!) to Tucson on hwy77.

Anybody else on here ever ran one??

I did my 1st half marathon (13.1 mi.) last Jan. and am doing another this Jan.

It was great but I hear full marathons are a whole nother story. Most say at aroud 18 mi. you want to die and it is no longer any fun, but hey, knock yourself out! :P

I'll try one eventually.

I did the NYC marathon about 15 years ago.

It was tough to get started and get into the groove, but after a few minutes ..

I could not believe how many people a guy like me who had never run a marathon could pass up.

From the start of the race I just seemed to fly by almost everyone.

Sports Professionals, celebrities and others gave up as the miles went by.

The last few miles seemed to take only moments and just as I was about to cross the finish line.....

I woke up!

But I say go for it.

If you look at the course you are correct MOST of it is down hill but to make sure you want to die I believe the last couple of miles is up hill.

Have you seen some marathon runners?! They run the LAST like 4-5 miles in 5 minutes! Now, I can run a little bit for a big guy, but 5 minute miles?! AFTER doing 20+ already?! Holy ISH!!! I couldnt do a 5 minute mile if my life depended on it!

Scott, your a crazy mofo! If you need someone to train with, let me know... Ill ride the quad (and keep all 4 tires on the ground) right next to ya!

I ran the San Diego Rock n Roll marathon last May, as far as marathon planning it was great: bands, lots of people, good weather, etc. As far as running 26.2 (and yes that .2 is for real) it was one of the more painful/transcendent things I've ever done.

As for the training miles, send me a PM and I'll outline the training I did for it. Its something like 5,7,10,12,15,16,18,20,22 miles on Saturdays for a couple of months (you can count how many Saturdays with at least two rest weekends during training, and two weeks of rest before the race)... Personally, I started out at the 10 mile mark but my wife who did Team in Training (Leukemia and Lymphoma Society fundraising group) started out at like 2.

All you gotta know is that Oprah ran the Chicago Marathon in 4:29.00

Sadly, I took my pack-test for firefighting two days before the race, and that *little* *tiny* bit of soreness I felt at the beginning of the race really killed me the last 2 miles. I finished in 4:51.00 which means I am destined to run another one of the bloody things so I can say I beat that woman. (and before any of you yahoo's belittle me for being slower than Oprah, know that I'm 6'2, 210lbs -- not exactly built like a Kenyan).

I'm signed up for the Tucson 1/2 Marathon; my wife is the program coordinator of the BETTER THAN EVER program the official sponsor of the race -- http://www.tucsonmarathon.com/

Good luck with your training!

Tyson

hey Tyson, I'm not sure you being 6'2''/210lbs. is a defense that's going to help you considering Oprah is like 5'2''/310lbs. :P

haha, don't forget she also had a legion of personal trainers behind her (whipping her by her own command).. All I had was Briggs-dog and dirt roads on State Trust land!

Scottyboy, you'll do fine- Just know that although cardio is important its not nearly as important as your tolerence for pain. Lost the nails off both my big toes, chafed and blistered in places I can't bare to talk about and found out that power gel without water creates a nice little seal in the back of your throat that will cut off you air supply......Ah, good times. I did get a free beer from the sponsors when I finshed so that was cool.......... Good luck brother- Its a helluva feat........

Hey Scott:

I used to run lots. Did three marathons in the early 90s. Of course this was before I had kids, and hence had LOT'S of time!!! LOL Seriously though, it's about 50% mental, and given your like of adventure I'm sure you'll do fine. Don't short yourself on the training. Prior to my first marathon I thought I was ready by running 5-7 miles a day & 10 or so on Saturdays. I was WRONG! :) 5-7 miles per day is fine for a 1/2 marathon, but you'll want to get used to running 12-15 at least every other day for the few weeks leading up to the race IMO.

These days my workouts are limited to Bikram Yoga 2-3 times per week. Don't laugh unless you've done it though. It will kick your _ss!!!

Good luck!!!

S.

:)

In high school I ran a lot, but I never did do a full marathon. I did do a couple of 14 mile training runs, but never ran an actual race of the half marathon distance. At the hardest parts of training for cross country I was doing 50-70 miles per week, which actually wasn't bad once one gets used to it. Good luck.

A couple of tips for you... use Body Glide to prevent chaffing, and wear shoes that are a half size to big. I know that sounds crazy but that is why people lose there toenails.
