Unit 22 Oct. hunt Question

Recommended Posts

My brother(Buckhunter) and I hunt 22 alot, and you will see people on the roads and just hiking aimlessly around hoping to bump something out of a draw or across the canyon from the road their on. We rarely see many people out glassing hard. Last year we went to a little spot that has a great vantage and there was 4 people there with their top of the line Walmart binos glassing, they said they had been there for a couple hours and there were no deer there. In 15 min m brother and I glassed up 10 deer. Lots of people out there getting tags that have little or no chance of filling them.

Need help/info on good spots in Unit 22. I have not hunted this unit before...usually down south, but am taking my 10year old out on his first hunt. As was mentioned before, I prefer to stay away from the crowds. This unit is pretty sizable, and it seems that most people concentrate aroun Mt. Ord. I do like hiking back in a ways, but at the same time have to keep in mind the endurance of a 10 year old. Any suggestions on other accessible roads around Ord, or better yet other good hunt areas in the unit? Any help is much appreciated. Hunt is the end of October.

I drove up for the morning to check out a couple more areas, I will agree Mt Ord scares me, the thought of all the people on the mountain opening weekend. I drove through from Payson towards Doll Baby and south to Rye, kicked up a couple with a nice shooter buck. I haven't hunted that area before either. I haven't found where they water yet. Not sure if there are any small tanks scattered around. I did see lots of sign while I was hiking, it was pretty warm today.

Any hints on the water situation would be helpful.

Thanks,

Jackmedic

I went up and checked a few of the areas I have seen some decent buck. I did a lot of hiking (and it was HOT!) and can't seem to find any water in the areas I have seen them. They are in there so they have got to be getting water some place I just have not found it yet.I have found were there was water. :( But they are there so I'm not going to worry about it to much.

Good Luck

I have a question for the guys who have hunted 22 in Oct. I have found bucks all over the unit. What I want to know is with 600+ tags were do most of the hunters hunt in this unit? I have not hunted it before but have done my homework in the unit now I just want to know were most of the traffic is during that hunt so I can stay away from most of it. I found some REALLY good bucks this weekend and I have a bad feeling it will be full of hunters during the hunt because it is fairly easy to access. I will miss the first three days of the hunt do to my sisters wedding so I will be hunting during the week so I hope that will help some.Any help you can give me will be great and very appreciated.

Thanks

Ya being from Payson and hunting this unit my whole life like everyone else is saying, the weekends will be hard to find anywhere where other folks aint going to be. i usually hunt into the mazatzals on the weekends then come closer to town during the week. the difference in the weekend and week hunts is huge. you dont see half, a quarter of the people from the weekend. so if you dont kill that first weekend stay a day or two and youll have some luck
