curious to see who has a tag for 35a this year

Recommended Posts

title says its all, i missed the draw but picked up a left over tag for the early nov. hunt, also curious to those who have hunted in the last couple years and where you have seen deer where they typically wouldnt be, like in the huachucas or mustangs because those mountain ranges are getting packed more and more every year.

My family and I drew 5 tags for the late Nov early Dec hunt. First time for all of us in unit 35a. Done some scouting around the Mustangs and haven't found jack yet only 2 flat tops. Looks like some hard hunting in the Mustangs very steep and rocky and if you ever found one it looks like it would be tough to get a close shot. I'm going to scout in there a few more times but I don't think I'm going to be hunting there even if I found a 100 inch buck in there.

Also been around Car and Ash didn't find much this is where I'm going to concentrate most of my scouting hopefully I can get some located before the hunt starts. Unfortunately by the time my hunt rolls around any bucks that I find might be shot up by then.

Good Luck.

anything on the east side of the huachucas will look like truck rally, those canyons are over run with road hunters, atv's, and illegals, ive never hunted the mustangs but ive heard they are just as bad. do you live in the valley?

great bucks on the west and south side of huachuas and if you're lookin for a trophy buck go to mustang mtns, be prepared to see no bucks for a few days and a trophy will pop out when ya least expect it or just about given up, don't even bother hunting canyons close to herford and SV unless you're a meat hunter or hike wayyyy up to the very top, good luck

I can see how the Mustangs can hold a few big bucks due to the tough terrain. Is there ever any coues in the flats surrounding the Mustangs?

yeah, the problem is finding a vantage point and glassing for them but there is also a lot of mule deer down there.

elkhunter, do you have any pics of deer youve taken out of 35a?

I have hunted 35A for the past six years. I archery hunt, so there are a few more options. I have only taken one buck but it was a pretty nice one. There are quite a few good deer in the Huachucas, but as mentioned before, during the gun hunts the deer are up high in the hills because of all of the "Weekend Truck Warriors". If you check out my profile you will see a picture of the Buck I took. I do know of several other nice deer taken within the unit. Hunter Canyon seems to be a very popular place to hunt, but if you are patient and can get up aways you can take a nice deer. Last year there was a 123" deer taken out of Hunter Canyon. Illegal activity is horrible in the Huachucas during the winter months so don't be surprised if you see them and DEFINITELY CARRY A HANDGUN.

Good Luck

Last year was my first time hunting 35, SouthernCoues turned me on to Hunters Canyon, and was impressed to see quite a few nice bucks. End of January bow saw 3 nice bucks in Miller Canyon. Still alot of illegals.
