WadeNAZ Report post Posted September 1, 2008 I have a Winchester pre-64 30-30. I used to hit coke cans at 80yds with the iron sights. Still could but it doesnt get out of the gun cabinet much. It has also killed a javelina within the same distance. To me the 30-30 is the one gun that to me has that "old west" "cowboy" feel and I just cant picture it with a scope on. Well I can but it looses its "Westerness?" (does that make sense?) My suggestion is practice with it and get proficient and confident with the open sites. just my thoughts. good luck on whatever you decide. -Wade
Coues 'n' Sheep Report post Posted September 1, 2008 NO SCOPE!!!!!! Real men don't use lever actions w/ scopes!!!! Ask the Rifle Man or the Duke!!!
Benbrown Report post Posted September 1, 2008 You don't need a lot of scope for a .30-30. A fixed-power of 2.5x, 3x or 4x, at the most, will work just fine. I wouldn't go with a varaiable, myself, but if you do, a Leupold 1-5x would be my recommendation. I would stick with name brands such as Leupold, Burris, Nikon, etc., as most of the .30-30 carbines do recoil somewhat. Just my two cents worth...
Kaffer62 Report post Posted September 2, 2008 You dont even need a scope. You should be good out to 200 yards with the iron sights. Just for kicks, me and my old man put a 4x power scope on his Marlin 450. I would stick with a 4x scope for something like that.
.270 Report post Posted September 2, 2008 cabelas makes a scope pre-calibrated for leverevolution ammo. the new kinda pointy ammo that is safe in a tube magazine. i'd get one o' them and just use that ammo. check it out. Lark.
matthewp45 Report post Posted September 3, 2008 Def. get a nikon omega scope with the BDC reticle. It is made for a muzzleloader with a long eye relief and the scope is small. It is a 3X9X40. I have one on my Marlin 45-70 and it is awesome coupled with the lererevolution ammo. The last circle is 300 yards with a 100 yard zero. You can not go wrrong with this combo. Chef Report post Posted September 3, 2008 You should try a peep sight rear and a firefront sight. It does real good set up that way. You could also add a scout scope set up. I have the following set up on my Marlin .444 and it works great for me. I also have it set up with the quick release weaver rings and it holds zero every time. http://www.gunblast.com/AO_Leupold.htm
coueschaser3 Report post Posted September 3, 2008 have a pic rail mounted on it and do a high eye relief low power scope such as this. Scout gun style and the only way to go if your gonna put glass on a lever gun.
Coues Sniper Report post Posted September 3, 2008 Isn't putting a scope on a 30-30 kinda like out driving your headlights?
.270 Report post Posted September 3, 2008 i hunted with an ol' model 94 for several years, before i grew up into a .270. i bought it used at talley and son's for $42. got it and a box of shells with 11 unshot ones it. it was made in 1928. i can remember always wishing i could put a scope on it. a .30/30 is a deadly thing for sure, in the hands of a real hunter anyway. i've killed a buncha stuff with mine. deer, elk, bear, lion, javelinas, coyotes. they ain't a .270, but they ain't a cork gun niether. i'd rather have one o' them than a 7mm/08, that's for sure.
