coueselk Report post Posted December 19, 2004 I chased muleys with a bow for the last two days. Got within 60 yards twice this morning to a nice 3 point. Just didn't offer a good shot. Did have a bobcat climb a tree yesterday morning 54 yards from me. He sat there for about 5 minutes looking over the tall grass around the ravine that both of us were hunting. I thought about taking a shot at him, but it was neat having him beside me hunting as well. The muleys haven't started rutting yet. Saw a total of 4 bucks for both days and around 40 does. The biggest buck was the 3 point I tried to get this morning.
crazyaboutcoues Report post Posted December 19, 2004 We've been out scouting for our NM hunt and the rut looks like it's in full swing for muleys. Saw four muley bucks and one coues buck. The muleys were chasing does pretty hard. But the Coues buck was by himself. It will be interesting to see what will happen by Jan 8, when our season starts. ScottAdams Report post Posted December 19, 2004 I was out with a friend today who had the whitetail tag for 27/28. My 14 year-old son Austin came along and had his bow in case we found a good muley. We did, it was a nice big and heavy 3 point. Twice Austin was able to get with about 70 yards but never any closer. The muleys are rutting here also. The coues deer are not. I went out with Craig Holmes (300wsm) yesterday and we saw this monster muley. Unfortunately Austin was in school. He would have loved to of had a crack at this big brute!! 111 Report post Posted December 19, 2004 I went out to 20A and saw lots of muley doe. In the afternoon I went to unit 21 to glass that awesome country, and saw more doe. I don't think the ruts in full swing yet. Looks like unit 27 has a rut going on though. Good luck on your hunt.
crazyaboutcoues Report post Posted December 19, 2004 Scott that buck looks like the one we saw last year in the Blue . The one up on the ridge was wider but the one in the creek looks like this bad boy. We went out to where you and Austin took the Coues buck in NM. We hiked up to D tank and it's getting pounded right now. My buddy Jason will be hunting that area during the NM archery season. I'll be up by Mogollon Baldy trying for that 100"er. Good Luck Craig
ScottAdams Report post Posted December 19, 2004 I was wondering what y'all found in there. Your buddy may find that 100 incher before you, if you don't watch it. That buck on the Blue was bigger than this one, but this one is certainly no slouch.

bR80PSE Report post Posted December 20, 2004 Me and a buddy went up to unit 23, by just shy of Young opening day. I got a decent mule (3 point) with my bow just over 60 yards. Glassing a hill and saw it, my partner went around the butt end of the hill and pushed it towards me, sat broadside for about 15 mins at around 80 yards then moved closer, took the shot hitting him right in the liver, found him about 20 yards after. Also spotted a few coues doe, couple Coatimundi's (didnt know what the heck those were, had to talk to Game and Fish) and a few peccaries. Good hunt, good area, but a little thick for bowhunting, i would reccomend 23 to any rifle hunters.
