Lightweight (ultra light) Rifle Suggestions

Recommended Posts

I haven’t hunted with a rifle in over 20 years since I first picked up a bow and got the bow hunting bug. I am also an avid backpacker and have learned how important shedding weight is even an ounce. I want to put in for a general deer hunt and backpack in. Looking for suggestions on a very lightweight rifle.  Lighter the better.  All of my current rifles are heavy bench shooters.

Check the Savage 110 Ultralite with carbon barrel, I believe is just under or around 6lbs. ..or these?

Another option is the Browning Hells Canyon Speed, also under or about 6lbs.

There are "better" lightweight rifles with smoother actions but for the money, I couldn't be happier with my Savage LWH with handloads. It sits at 7#s on the nose with a 3-15x on top and 4 rounds in it and shoots sub-MOA out to 500 (so far).

This would be good.  To get the weight lower, you could have a gunsmith cut and crown the barrel flush with the forend of the stock.  You may have to get it registered with the ATF as a short barrel rifle, but you will have a very light rifle.

How light is light for you?  What is your budget?

I went through this same process a little while back and ended up with a kimber mountain ascent. That thing is STUPID LIGHT.  I needed to cut weight for high country hunts that were killing me. I ama sissy when it comes to hiking. I went from a tikka t3 and an 8lb pack to  3.5 lb pack and my kimber. Cut about 7lbs from my carry.

Others that I considered are the Barret Fieldcraft, Bergara mountain 2.0 and the montana rifle company,

Gunwerks just came out with an ultralight as well. Sako has a very nice one also. Todd at Southrn xpress could make you a sweet custom.

Now learning to SHOOT an ultralight is a whole different topic....lol

I am super happy with my Kimber and wish I had gone that route years ago. With a swarovski scope my rifle and scope weigh about 6.5 lbs, loaded.

Second a Swarovski scope. Beats a 30 to 35 oz scope all day long.

I’ve got a bergara premier mountain 2.0 in 6.5 Creedmoor I won in a raffle (the only way I’d ever own a creedmoor!) I’d sell you.  I don’t think there’s a gayer caliber out there for true long range hunting like all the bros make it out to be, but I gotta admit it would be a great lightweight deer caliber, or kids elk and deer rifle.

Around 5.5 or 6 lbs for rifle?  Budget maybe less than 1,000

Thanks, but that may be more than I’d like to spend!

I have a Savage Light Weight Hunter in 7-08, loaded weight right around 6lbs. I love it so much I bought one in .270, which I planned to rebore into a .280 AI with a proof barrel. Basically turn it into the new Savage Ultralite. I bought it a month before Savage came out with the UltraLite. The problem with the 280 AI Ultralite is that it only comes in a 22" barrel for that caliber.

But if your interested in .270 shoot me a pm.
