You probably had a two core radiator and went to a three core; meaning you went from two rows of tubes to three and getting better cooling. I will try the thermostat first, Thats $8.00 compared $200 to $400 for a premium radiator. I put a cooler thermostat in my chevy truck to get it to run cooler to get rid of the engine knock (preignition), and it worked. My jeep has a little engine knock during the summer when going up a grade. I just got to be careful not to get it to run to cool where I end up with excess carbon deposits. I will let you know how it works when I do it. They purposly make these engines to run on the warm side for emissions purposes.

It used to be when I worked behind the counter that anyone with cooling problem came to me cause I had so many I learned the tricks.

If it overheats at slow speeds, it usually Airflow problems. these could include the fan clutch, missing fan shroud, clogged radiator fins, or faulty electric fan switch. It could be a Tstat if the heating is a problem at any speed..

High speed overheating is not generally airflow, if your radiator grill is pretty clear. High speed means water flow problems (radiator, collapsed hose, thermostat stuck, bad water pump etc) because at 40mph, you are ramming enough air into the radiator to cool it.

With newer vehicles, so much is dependent on getting the motor up to operating temp, you need to be careful about swapping the 195 for a 160. Some guys took out the t-stat altogether and the vehicle ran hotter! That is since the t-stat provides a restriction to keep the water IN the radiator long enough to allow it to cool. The t-stat will open and close as the water temp changes. Works liek and air conditioner expansion valve.

Hijacking the thread again... I gotta quit that. It is good info anyway.

Amanda, did I tell you I like your new Jeep. Good luck on the decision to sell your old one.

Thread is back on track.

Amanda if you just buy one of those jump start packs and keep it charged up It could save the day for you. You can even purchase a new alternator and put it in a milk crate behind the back seat with a few extra parts and tools.

I have always brought along a few parts and a good set of tools. The parts, tools,And jumper box have all brought me home at one time or another.

You're right diamondback, it was a 2 to 3 core change. I can see why you would try the thermostat first! I hope it works for you.

AZ guide - I carry a bunch of stuff with me, but haven't bought one of those jumper packs yet. Anyone know what brand is best? Or all they pretty much the same?

AZ4life - good info, I don't mind you hijacking the thread for that. It's applicable.

I think the jump start packs are all about the same. I have seen several brands in the past few years and some of them even look the same with different labels on them. They are sort of bulky for me to carry around so I just take my chances. Since I am not offroad as much as you, my situation is different I am sure. I just try to Make sure the cell phone has good coverage! :D
