I recently drew a San Carlos Coues deer tag for Unit B in November of this coming year, my old man has the same timeframe in unit C. I know its a long shot, but does anyone have any recommendations? Portions of the units to focus on? Areas to stay away from? Deer populations? are the deer real pockety or are they a little more widespread like the souther AZ units? I plan on scouting in the early velvet and getting up into the mountains 3 days before the hunts start. Thanks for any help.

I am looking at going to the black river on the San Carlos reservation to camp and fish small mouth bass middle of this month. Has anyone been near the pump station recently and would be willing to give a report? Where’s the best place to get a permit? Hows the camping on the river? What are you throwing on the reel and on the fly? thanks in advance!

Late notice but something to do this weekend if anyone's available. Non members only need a Habitat Stamp to participate in the event. Must register by 12pm Friday (3/15). Final check-in on Sunday 4pm. We're currently working on allowing suppressors for this event. If anyone has other questions I can answer to the best of my ability. DAN

I drew a January hunt on the San Carlos for Unit D. I am not one to E Scout, but considering this is my first time hunting the Rez, I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. I am looking for any information anyone can provide. Good or Bad. If you prefer, PM's are a great way to not advertise your information. I have an idea of where I want to start, but considering I am unable to scout until 3 days prior I am hoping someone can help ease the learning curve. Someone who had done this before.... Thank you for anything anyone can provide!

This is my Son, Aaron Altaha Jr., 11 years old, this past weekend was the last weekend of his rifle hunt for deer and he tagged out his 1st deer the day before the last day on 10/30/21. And he was blessed to harvest a Awesome 7x8 Coues buck from the San Carlos Apache Reservation in AZ.

My Girlfriend Ashley got it done in a big way this past Friday and knocked down a monster first Coues Deer! It was our only full day to get out and hunt together so we decided to roll the dice on a special buck that i've had 3 years of history with. It all happened so fast and was/is surreal because everyone knows that 99.9% of the time the stars just don't line up for you. I still can't believe that we got him and I am very proud of the effort Ashley put into harvesting this beautiful creature. DAN

Hello, I have a Archery Bull Tag for the San Carlos Reservation Maylay Gap unit from 9/21 to 10/6 archery bull elk. I have never been there and could use any advice that anyone has. I am open to using a guide as well. If anyone has any first hand experience it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I was thinking of fishing some new parts of the Black this year. I know the best fishing is along the lower/south portions of river. But wanted to switch it up and was thinking of fishing up river a bit more, just to the SE of where the White merges with the Salt. Anyone had any luck fishing for small mouth bass up in that part of the river?

About 5-10 miles before Seneca Lake and Salt River Canyon there is a unmarked service road heading East into the San Carlos Res, there are about 4 tanks (Highway Tank, Upper Highway, Canyon, & Sycamore Tank) within a couple miles of the highway. Does anyone know if these are stocked or has anyone fished these with success? Specifically for small mouth? I do not have the proper 4x4 vehicle right now to go deep into the mountains to my usual fishing tanks so I need something closer to the highway. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Had a successful hunt on San Carlos, didn't fill a tag on mentoring on the Coclcord Ridge NWTF youth hunt in unit 23, but we still considered successful, and just wrapped up helping my brother and some friends on a unit 8 turkey hunt. We found some roosted, but they zigged and we zagged, game over. Only saw 1 turkey in 3 days. We had a lot of fun though! This was my first time in unit 8, awesome country for sure, but surprised to only see 1 turkey. I'll get to explore here more this summer, as we're having our family reunion at or near White Horse Lake.

Anxious to hear which archery elk hunt I drew, but in the meantime, I leave for San Carlos a week from tomorrow! Went to the Desert Christian Archers (now Christian Hunters of America) sponsored turkey hunting seminar last night. It was a great seminar as usual, except I didn't win the Mexico guided Gould's hunt from Colburn and Scott outfitters. Oh well. Ammon from Little Creek Calls was there with some of his awesome calls he makes. I bought a couple of diaphragm calls and a couple of strikers from him. Thanks Ammon! Somehow I wound up short on strikers, wonder how that happened? Actually, the holders in my turkey vest are lame, gotta come up with something better. The strikers I got from him are really cool, they have bug holes in them, giving them more character. One has an acrillyc rod in it. (See pic) I'm working on another striker, mounting a bear claw on the end, just for something different. Will post when I finish, going to take it with me on the hunt, so I'd better get busy. I also am going turkey hunting in New Mexico on the 15th, after I get back from this hunt, then going straight to Colcord Ridge for the youth turkey camp as a mentor. Good luck to all the turkey hunters in the coming weeks!

Hey everybody- I'm new to cw.com but was wondering if anybody out there has hunted the San Carlos Res for cow elk. I got a tag for Oct 30- Nov 8 later this month. I'm making my first scouting trip up there end of this week. Can anybody get me headed in the right direction? I've been to SC at least 20 times going in to Black River and turkey hunting and can honestly say I've never seen an elk there. Am planning on starting my scouting at Dry Lake. Thanks.

Posted April 09 2013 - 10:42 PM After not seeing or even hearing a bird for two days and getting beaten to my area of choice by other hunters Monday morning, I had to come up with plan "C". I drove to an area I've never been in, and started hiking in to try to make something happen. Well, I realized I had parked on a huge path of scratching that looked fresh, started following it and within 1/2 hour I heard my first gobble along with some hen yelps...the chase was on! I caught up to a flock of 14 birds, 1 good gobbler, some jakes and the rest hens. They responded to my calls, but kept heading where they wanted to go, so I had to stalk them. I got close 4 times, going over two ridges, across 1 meadow, and then we played zig and zag on this one ridge, until finally I saw them through an opening in the trees. They were moving in a single file, passing one by one through the opening. I didn't know if "my bird" had gone by yet, so I took aim and watched as they went by. Then the big gobbler appeared and I blasted him from what wound up being a 71 yard shot. He weighed 17.3 pounds and had a 9" beard! I packed it up amongst the high winds that started about then and beat the rain (and mud) home. 2 for 2 on the San Carlos! Me and 3 of my friends that "took me" turkey hunting for the first time (back in '04?) have tags for next year-should be a hoot...er...yelp of a time. The picture isn't very good, only got 3 before the camera croaked. Thanks for looking, Tommy UPDATE 1/31/2014: I just picked up my 2013 San Carlos bird from Sven at Wildlife Wings Designs. I had him do a walking pose, just like it was doing when I last saw it. Sven did his usual awesome job! I forgot how big this Tom was.

I'm considering a San Carlos unit D November tag. I'm used to spot & stalk muley archery hunting. Has anyone hunted here? How is it? I prefer to backpack in and stay for a few days. Is there any where that anyone would suggest starting? Should I even buy the tag? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
