  1. First let me say that the guys over a Camera Land hooked me up with just what i was looking for in a price rance I was looking for...Cheap!! A big Thanks to Neil over there... he's a good guy! I ran out early one morning this weekend just to find something far away to put my spotting scope on... I just purchased a demo model of the Minox Camera Module for my STS 65, for digescoping.... I like it for the price! it actually takes pretty dang good pics and once I learn a bit more about it I think I will do better. I love the remote trigger and it is very easy to use. For the cost it was exactly what I was looking for, light, compact, fast and simple, and I think the images are pretty dang good considering the animal size and the distance. As with most digital cams the less zoom the clearer the pics, but i was impressed with the distance thes next two pics were taken and that they are at full zoom. What you all think for $329.00? Here is a pic of a whit-tail doe at about a mile. Here is a cow and yearling at 1.8 miles! I can't wait to get back out after some bull pics! I also bought a closout Olympus Stylus 780... it is supose to be somewhat weather proof and it takes pretty nice pics as well. I took a few pics over the long weekend. It was only $139.00.... The new ride vs. a an old ride... An old mining camp. After Fridays storm. I sure saw a bunch of these this w/e! Almost hit one with my truck! But drove up on theis one while on my Ranger.... I was only 10-15 yds.... I managed to put a couple of these out as well.... Hope you all had a great w/e as well!

Weekend Pics & a product review.

I did not see the mearns near there.... however, the 1/2 dozen places that I have seen birds (mearns) would lead me to believe that they could be in that area as well. How did your cams do for you in there?

    Quantity or Quality?

Well put Terry. I, too, opt for "b" places, for coues.

    Neighbor's yard

Looks like they have an entire ecosystem in their back yard! Great pics!

    Interesting Conclusion

Now divide that by 60 months (5 years) to get 0.7 Iraqi civilian deaths/100,000/month. Compare this 0.7 to the 60 US soldier deaths/100,000/month and 80.6 DC/100,000/month (figures given by OP) Never argue with a teacher.... they pay attention to details....

    ****NOT MY HERO****

Quoting myself above You're right, that is not a map, it is a picture of Arizona. Seems like the guys who are pissed, are the guys who have seen this before. Remember what Hirsch did to Black River? The next year they frickin graded the road and put in picnic tables!!!! Learn from the experience, most of us have done the same, myself included ( NOT with WR!) and regret it to this day. Low pressure hunting is priceless in Az, keeping just one hunter out of your "area" can mean all the difference. Just let 'em find their own spots. Lots of country out there I've seen lifelong hunting buddies turn into mortal enemies over deer or "secret" spot, I can think of 6 off the top of my head (4 cw members already ) Nate, Great deer, always will be, regardless. Stick around, we'll still be talkin about this buck in 10 yrs Matt Woodward Well said, Matt. All the long winded posts and beating and so on.... and you said it best with a few short lines. Thanks for putting into words what many could not.... It truely is that simple. With that said let me try to be more clear in my point of view. There is no denying that it is one of the greats trophies to ever come from public land in this state. I have not read the story nor do I plan to just cuz, I don't read that Mag.... not a suscriber. I don't hunt that unit.... so I am definately not jealous or angry from that perspective.... however, I did find it a bummer for the guys that do hunt there.... for the next couple of seasons. An event like this and a buck like that could jump the harvest numbers in that unit to a point where they implement the draw, or limit archery hunts... an unfortunate occurance, especially for guys that "only hunt that unit". Big picture.... and that picture is, that it could happen.... and it may not. But for all of us it is a lesson that the spin can be costly.... and I will always maintain the the stance that, "Loose lips, sink ships".... From that respect even though I did know where and on what road those pics were taken.... I will always take that kind of info to the grave.... not only out or respect to the owner of that buck but also to the fellow hunters that treasure their time in those hills as well. I have seen this before and that is what struck my nerve.... to me it is a bummer to single out a county (although P&Y does require a county), a unit, a mountain range, or a single canyon. Those that remember, know that I made this very same point about the book that Tony & Duwane put out (a good book BTW... & my son is in it).... and got hammered for that as well.... and yet, I still feel the same way about the issue. I have a hunting buddy and very close friend that hunted one canyon for many years hardly ever seeing others.... he even killed a 126" monster buck there..... that particular canyon was on the short list for that unit in the book and is now a parking lot... ..... Do I (or does he) really care.... well no, but it is an example of how bad publicity is. I have friends that hate this site and every site just like it..... their point is that it ruins the concept of hard work because it puts way too much info at the finger tips lazy e-scouters. I disagree, however, when comes to sweat equity of scouting time, hunting time, and hard earned knowlege, I believe that to narrow a map down to one unit or one piece of coutry is an ethics snaffu. Giving the masses a starting point.... whether they are successful or not, the added preasure and traffic does take its toll on the hunters and inadvertently the herds as well. We all have the responsiblity to hold back a bit.... there is so much we can share without actually "giving" anything away.... and finding that happy medium is really what this issue is about, IMO. There is nothing bad that can ever be said about this buck or the fact that is was harested under Fair Chase and is one of the finest animals ever harvested in this state with a bow. Do not for one second allow the issue of this thread to be misconstrued as jealousy. The Congrats on this huge buck have never been anything less than unanimous, as far as I am aware. Lets remember that the thread started as a point made and a point taken that certain aspects surrounding the publicity of the buck were less than ideal and I do believe that many would/have agreed (including NL). Bummer deal for all involved.... But a great Great deer regaurdless.

    Interesting Conclusion

Well however the numbers play out, there is one thing we can all agree on...... That is that tough gun laws, here, in the UK or Austraila, or anywhere else, does not keep guns out of the hands of the bad guys.... I know that I feel much safer knowing every house on my block has a gun in it.... I don't ever want to be an unarmed "subject"....

    ****NOT MY HERO****

Ya know Bob..... I gotta hand it to you..... When you are wrong, you're wrong... but as far as coming off wrong in first posts there is much to be said for how hard it is to transfer emotion into text.... making it very easy to assume that someone is a Jerk. I've got broad shoulders and I dang sure have my Butha's back... honorable and gracious he is and one of the finest hunters I know. I have been on both sides of this "He shot the Big One.... Get the Rope!" crap and as Kent mentioned there must be a touch more to it.... To clarify... I have never hunted where NLA shot his buck and don't intend to ever hunt there (now fore sure!) with a bow. And I just love it when the desert rats start herding us mountain boys in a corner and take pot shots at us for standing up for a belief.... there are far less of us and I'd take most of these "petty" mountain boys over just about anybody, cuz they are real and they call it how it is. Further more the guys that are most angry about the hole deal are not northland dwellers.... folks from Globe and Pheonix just lost a great spot close to home for about 3-5 years. This is not at all about me, or the unit, or where a guy hunts, it is about respect for fellow hunters (and yes, I believe in that VERY much).... and about being so hungry that you forget to kill the spin before it bites you! I made the point that it was a Rookie mistake, if Nate is as good a fellow as he claims to be then the point was taken and he made, IMO, an apology. At this stage that is all that he can do besides learn and move onward and upward. I hope the next time he kills a WR that he is better prepared for how ugly it is at the top and does more justice for himself and his fellow hardworking hunters..... and I am sure he will. And before you blow me up again remember that this is all about passion and that passion is what sparks a thread like this, it is passion that make this site and threads like this so important..... it is part of the learning curve. I've been part of FTF frays like this and some of them leave scars and some build new friendships and better people. The words in this thread should be or could be boiled down to wisdom for young and new hunters.... Previous threads as well as tutelage from their respected piers is what has helped several guys on here become better and better hunters, IMO. Threads like this are healthy.... they clear the air... I said my piece and I am good with that. If you or Nate or anyone else hate me for what I said that is fine, but I always leave it on the table here and in real life and make no mistate I'd have sent the same message face to face.... so love it or hate it.... I am who I am.... and who I am proud to be. And maybe I will have that beer with Nate sometime.... but he and I will understand each other better for the words that he and I have written here . I am good with that too. And Nate I do wish you the best... You are the one who will have to deal with this the longest.... but I'm betting you'll handle it. Have a great rest of the week ... I am off to the woods for 5 days! LATERS!!!!

Clay, I'm thinkin' you should add that to your Résumé..... I'm sure that those comments will move you to the front of the line with every Outfitter in the state! After all it only takes 3 crisp $100 bills to get that guide's license! Never mind all the really good guys that hunt that country and bust their tails that are now looking for a new "spot"... Hope it is one of your 100's of spots! Your "new" hunting buddy hit a home run on this deal... Glad all that country burned up... it might make this Flub a bit less painfull for all the good guys that love those hills. Nate, You need to man up..... .... If my hunting partner had loose lips like yours..... 2 other units would have maps like **a does.... You see lighting does NOT strike twice....My hunting partner is not only a blessed man, but also a Gracious one and not only truely respects the grey ghost but also the other Men and Women who chase it. I believe the term: Even a blind Squirrel... was used???? You are great at the strut but you have the swagger of a Lucky Duck.... There are a lot of guys on this forum that have put in years and decades of chasing these wicked little deer only to have their Arses handed to them, again..... You disrespect them, IMO. Don't ever forget that you were far more lucky than good.... as we all are when we harvest a coues with a bow. We all know the story of you standing on the side of the road with an un-gutted deer acting like you just shot a 100"er..... you need a steady diet of humility, cuz the diet of stupidity you have been on is stinking the place up. Humble up and shut up..... those are my two words of advice..... Best of luck on your up coming season. Amanda..... it has ben a while since the D.D. side of me has reared up.... sorry for that, but not sorry for what I said. Beau.... you are really more old school than I ever imagined...... Kudos!

Dang, Big Guy!! ... I'm glad you are telling it like it is.... I heard about it, but had not read it.... It was a ploy to keep people off his tail and other "secret spots" Many already knew where... now everyone knows. You are right it is rude to throw the other guys that hunt there and that area under the bus.... It is a Rooky mistake....this is the West... not up state New York or Michigan or whatever... & a violation of an un-written code. But you gotta love that "smack" sound of a belly flop on water though..... Hey Beau..... I'll be your huckleberry.... we got a couple of tags left among us!

    Eberlestock Backpacks

I have a J107 and it has been a great pack and I just purchased the Blue Widow and the zip in duffle.... I really like how modular it is... it is going to be a great pack I think, but beware.... it is BIG! That means you can and will carry more!

Can Someone Critique my Trail Cam Setup

I like to increase my number of pics by pointing it into as much open area as is available. I like to aim down the side of a clearing or a water hole.... here is why.... this cam is about 6" off the ground pointing down hill.
  18. Coues 'n' Sheep

I'd like to hear your perspective....

So... we have hunted an area for quite some time, and it is truely in the middle of no-where. And I have been watching this particular water hole pretty hard for a couple of years... I am aquainted with several guys that have hunted at or around it for probably more than 20 years.... It Ain't No Secret.... It is on all the Forest Service maps and topo maps that I own. On the bank it had an old hole that looked like a salt dump that was abandond, so last year I added some salt to it.... upon returning this spring to put out my camera the old crater was under water due to how full the tank was so I moved salt up higher on the bank and set up a camera to see what was hitting the water. I have a decent cam that lasts on one round of batteries for as long as 60 days.... so I did not check it until this weekend only to find it had been dead for a couple of weeks already...lots of pics of wind blowing the trees. ...and when I opened my lock box I found this little treasure tucked inside waiting for me.... Now I am not sure how you might take this, but I kinda think we all own the forest. If I acted like this in the areas that I have hunted all my life, everytime I discovered another hunter was using MY spot, I'd probably got whooped or thrown in jail by now... I'd have understood if this guy had simply said, "Hey, FIY, we plan to hunt here on the first or third (or whatever) weekend of this hunt and we don't want to mess you up or have you mess us up, so please give me a call. Thanks." That would have made perfect sense to me, anyhow..... So.... none the less I have wondered if I should get an attitude or just FUGGETABOUT IT!!!! See, the small town kid in me that grew up in this neck'o'the woods, says this guy doesn't even live or pay taxes in my county.... .... and I don't give a rip how long you think it is that you have called it your spot... Your Spot has ben considered A Spot to many old timers in the area long before you, or me.... and if you don't want me to sell my pictures and the GPS cordinates to the highest bidder... you might want to back up and be a bit more civil.... Well... that was one thought that crossed my mind.... Anyhow.... here is a pic of the rig I figure these guys ride so if you know the name, number, or ranger in the pic... pipe up! And I am pretty sure this is a pic of the guy that wrote the note...but ... I'm not sure. I do have to say that I respect the fact that they did not jack with my cam, but they also didn't want there faces on my cam either.... I did not go check to see if they had put a camera on a spot below that water hole where they obviously hunted before.... but I will next time just to be sure they know what my face looks like...cuz that is how I roll! What say you guys about a note like this???

    King Snake

Glad to see you back DB.... I look forward more posts from you, again! Gotta a question, though.... Do you have to have a permit with wild native snakes like that? Not that would ever have Guts to pick one up myself and bring it home!!

    What rifle is better!!!

I don't think I'd be spending my money on a Christensen Arms... I have heard several times over that the quality is not there. The barrels are the only thing special about them and they can be bought from other sources. A good custom shop would be my first choice but any Rem 700 actioned rifle will do very good things for you. Any good .30 cal will do if want to stretch it out a touch...IMO. I am 300 WBY guy, myself...
  23. Coues 'n' Sheep

    What would you do?

John, Buddy, I still think you did the right thing. One of things I think you forgot to mention is how happy you made that lady and that, I believe you told me, it was her first deer hunt? You potentially turned an ugly memory into a great first deer story. Your actions may have actually kept a new woman hunter in the woods for many future hunts.... although not all situations are the same.... in this case, I think you were Spot On! I always make it a point to yeild to woman and kid hunters whenever I can.... Their quality of hunt is far more important than a guy's hunt because we (guys) are coming back for more no matter what happens, but with women and kids one really bad incident and they may not want to do it again. Kuddos, Johnny!

    A few more....

Here are a couple that are growing quite nicely.... these pics are 1-2 weeks old.... This is 4 weeks ago.... Same bull 2 weeks ago.... There are a few more but that is all for now..... well there will be more....

Sierra Club wants lion tag to auction

I agree, but them Greenies have always had something missing.... call it comon sense. I think they figure they can save one lion by taking the tag out of the hands of hunters and if a real hunter shows up to bid then he is just funding them in part.... And although they could auction off a camera safari... it makes it legal if you have a tag in hand to pursue the animal whether you intend to harvest or not.... Wake up AZGF.... Please don't bite!!!! Sportsman fund wildlife conservation.... The groups like Sierra Club impede wildlife management & conservation.... There is no room to waste the good management tools that the state has in place on those who are the first to stand against good managment practices in the first place.
