Congresswoman Giffords shot
Coues 'n' Sheep replied to Kilimanjaro's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
I am think this Quack was going do this in some way somewhere.... he just chose a political stage... however, it could have been a classroom, or a coffee shop, or a grocery store... this guy was an obvious wack-o... There should be no trial, they should let his blood run freely on the streets of Tucson for his crimes... and send a message to all the freaks, that being weak, and evil will not be tolerated... that there is should be no hiding behind "insanity" when you take lives or forever maim human lives. You cannot rehab evil America!! It must be snuffed out with swift justice!! I am tired of our laws protecting Criminals… Swift Justice will make the weak minded think twice! Rapists, murders, child predators should simply be exterminated… simple ending to the evil in our society. -
Pushing an arrowed deer too soon!
Coues 'n' Sheep replied to talltines's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
First off.. sorry... it is a sick feeling when you know you blew it... I've seen it many times... we pinned a thread here last year to help with these sorts of mistakes. Please read it from front to back... http://forums.coueswhitetail.com/forums/in...showtopic=12229 Further more... You should not even be close to being "done" and back to hunting... a minumum of 2 full days of gridding should be spent in a 1/2-3/4 miles area. I once had a friend who looked for 4 months before recovering a buck he had shot...I recoverd a buck once 3 days later and 400 yds straight up... I once walked around the same bush for 3 hours before finding my buck bedded dead in the middle of it... you owe that deer a debt... pay it. You put too much time into a hunt to just quit... you started out hunting this buck and should finsh this hunt in the same fashion. Best of luck on the mountain... when gridding remember the deer was in flight mode and think like an animal in flight mode... it will help. Moral Fiber... that is what should push us forward when we weaken. That buck is very likely recoverable. Good luck. -
Nice Character on that buck. Congrats Matt!

Well... Kristy Ulmer glassed and shot a Big Coues buck while hunting today!! Guess it just runs in the Family!! Congrats Kristy!!!!! -
The one thing that always comes to mind for me when debates turn down the path of what You think is "Fair" vs what I think.... and that is: Do Mountain Lions care about fairness? Big cats kill far more deer a year than we do and they do it by whatever means they can. The "fair" card is what is not only the problem in hunting but in our country today. LIFE AIN'T FAIR!!!! The sooner we grow a set and realize this thread and our sport is not about 'Fair" the sooner we can get on to the real meaning. I enjoy the same challenges you do coues hunter and so does 308Nut and most of the folks that read here. I understand that you can't wrap your head around any other way of doing something, but your own way... That is fine. However it would benifit all of us if, as a group we could all attain a bit of balance in how we think and how we do... that is what this thread is about. Adaptation is the art of being a hunter and of being the prey... they adapt and we have to do the same. There is soo much more to hunting that the distance at which you squeeze a trigger or loose a string. The hunt starts long before the shot and ends long after.... but a clean ethical kill is center of it all! I'd prefir a standing or bedded shot, some love a running shot, we all strive for one shot! Success is where preperation and good fortune collide. A great example of this is the number of public land monster Coues deer my hunting buddy (Jeremy) and I have stacked up in the last 1/2 dozen years (4 in the 120's, a couple in the one-teens, and a bucket load of 100"-112" bucks)... over 1/2 of which were taken at under 50 yds..... most of the rest at under 400yd ranges.... and of course a few in in the 500-700 yd range.... We love getting close, but we adapt... you only see most giant coues bucks once every 7-10 days, you have to adapt to his environment if you can't get closer then you let him walk or you perform. This is where it becomes SOOOO important that a hunter knows their limitations and calls the shot or calls it off. That is what defines us.... I have had many critters in the scope poised for a shot and then called it off. It is not about the distance or the weapon... it is ALL about living within the limitaions of ourselves and our gear!! Not about anyone judging you, or me, or Mike, or any others.... We all owe it to the critters we hunt to judge ourselves! Happy New Years!

Hey everyone... I just want to say that Jeremy is still out hunting for a buck for his wife, Kristy, and that he is thankful for your congrats and that anyone passing through Payson in January (or Feb) can hold this rack if they stop in the shop and say hello. Happy New Years! -
Awesome Mount, Dale! It is even better in real life! Good luck next week!

Coues 'n' Sheep replied to Coues 'n' Sheep's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Thanks for the PM, Tim! Lobo, This was not a huge bodied deer but VERY healthy... I bet he was 95-100 lbs at best in live weight. Probly what most would call normal. But very healthy and a great cape, his facial features are great, very petite. I think I saw this buck a couple years ago as about a 100"er if so he is a very mature buck. Clay Goldman has the cape and Jeremy has the rack... not sure if anyone aged him. -
Happy Birthday!! Have a good one, Josh!

Coues 'n' Sheep replied to Coues 'n' Sheep's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Okay.... So Jeremy asked me to post up a few pics... he says he will try to write something up but likely not before the New Year... The pics do not truely do this buck justice... he is truely a Giant! If you are in the area stop in to Chasin' a Dream Outfitters at 612 S. Beeline Hwy, Payson, AZ 85541 and ask Jeremy to show you this Rack it has TONS of Character!! Congrats my Friend!!!! -
Awesome! I always do mine on the Smoker... but often screw up on the 15 minute "rest" before slicing... hard to wait!!! Great advice to let it rest!! Thanks for post it!!

The only problem I see here is that you are insinuating that anybody who takes a long range shot is not hunting or isn't a hunter. Well, what do you consider long range or not? Does a 300 yard kill make me a hunter and a 400 yard kill make me not worthy to be called a hunter? Where do you draw the line???? Does a 60 yard archery kill make you less of a hunter because you couldn't get to 20? Does taking less than 10-20 days mean you didn't put in the time to be worthy of being called a hunter? Does being done with my hunt at 7:30 am opening morning make my hunt less meaningful? If you saw a 110" buck walk by in front of you on opening morning while you are glassing and stop broadside at 30 yards with no idea you are there, would you shoot it? Wouldn't doing so go against what you have said you believe about hunting? By the way, I have no problem with your style of hunting or how you choose to do it. To me it sounds like you are very dedicated and very good at what you do. It just rubs people the wrong way when you arrogantly suggest that their way is the wrong way, or that you are better than them because you do it differently. I do not intend to take away from somebody elses hunt or style of hunting. However, I understand how what I have written thus far can be taken in this manner and apologize. I just cringe everytime I hear or read someone saying there was no way to get any closer so I had to shoot at 700+ yards. We all know how to close the distance better then that. Just say you're not patient enough to try and get closer or something. I could at least respect the honesty in that. Bottom line, its just my opinion. If you're comfortable with the way you are hunting and enjoy it then great. You dont need my aproval. Perfect! If you don't mind... we'd like to disregard all the less than constructive statements you've made pior to this one and move on with the thought provoking meaning of this thread!

Sir, Please let me point out that I love bow hunting as much as rifle hunting... I have taken critters from 12 to 525 yds... I am aware what it takes to get close... and that most places I hunt with one weapon I can't hunt with the other. I'd love to put a rifle of your choice in your hands and turn you loose with a Coues or Bull tag here in several central AZ units....and I'd find you a critter, then say, "There you go, get to 300 yds and shoot him!" First off when we got there you'd have likely said, "How are we gunna see anything in THAT $hit!" and then thought to yourself, 'Self, there is no way I can close the distance unless the critter stands in that one little opening all day'. If I was a desert hunter or open timber hunter I would almost always be able to get closer, but when hunting in 6'-10' tall manzanita, mountain mahogany, and scrub oak I bet money you can't get as close as you think... not to mention how do you walk on air if there is nothing but sheer bluffs on both sides of a canyon? My Point? I'm not wanting to judge you, or your understanding of All hunting situations, or how you hunt them... nor do I expect you to have the ablity to judge me. We are different hunters from different parts of a very diverse state. I respect how you hunt and would only expect the same in return. This thread is not about your (or my) ideals of what is a reasonable shot distance.... It is about how we all need to know what our limitations are and being as ethical as possible in our hunting. If your limitaions are 300-400 yds then I applaud you for knowing that and living by it. Telling me what my limitations are, or should be, is about as bad as you telling me to eat my green beans. I can and have gotten close and shall do so again... but when the day calls for a longer shot than average I'd like to think that I will have the fortitude and confidence to say 'yes' or 'no', on that day, in those conditions.

Beautiful buck, Congrats!

We all need to work on the ever changing limits of our abilities and our equipment. I'll refer you to my paragraph above that desertdog quoted in regaurds to your assumption that 300-400 yards should be a max distance.... I can choose not to hunt a lot of country if I use that range as my "Max". Objectivity is a big part of not only hunting but life… Just because you choose to drive a Chevy and I choose a Dodge or Ford does not really make either of us a better person. How we drive it may define us, however.
