how to get in shape for shed hunting

The #1 thing is boots.... boots you can walk in all day long without hot spots.... side hill, uphill, down hill... whatever. Second is having enough water and a few energy snacks... and a radio in case you get separated... the gps radios work best for horn hunting cuz it makes finding each other in the woods easier. As to being in shape doing it is the best way I just go push myself as hard as I can each day I am out there... I never prepare for it I just do the best I can and go prepared... cuz I learned a few hard lessons about preparedness.

    Venison Loins

Well was looking for a good finger food for the race yesterday and I came across a pack of deer tender loins in the freezer... It was snowing outside and I was not about to go crank up the grill so I improvised... I took 2 whole thawed loins (HaHa.. they are soo small) and seasoned them with cajun seasoning, garlic powder, garlic salt and then wrapped them in bacon...2 strips and 3 tooth picks for each loin got the job done. Then with a touch of olive oil in a pan on medium/low heat, I placed them in, cooking till the bacon was golden on all sides (turning every few minutes)and starting to crisp on the edges. Removed the loins to a plate to rest for a few minutes and added tooth picks about every inch along them (to hold the bacon after slicing) then sliced into +/-1" "nuggets wraped in bacon and medium rare in the middle.. Sorry no pitures but it was to good to share!

    Rage Slip-cams

Just want to make a point that may or may not be productive... The only thing Truely important about a broadhead is cutting diameter... if it punches a big hole it lets more blood out/faster. Other wise if you make a good shot you can kill something with a field point... and if you are patient after the shot you will recover it, because only gut shot or flesh wounded critters will go very far if not pushed. http://forums.coueswhitetail.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=12229 The 2 most important things to me in a broadhead is the cutting diameter and my personal confidence in that head for the game I am hunting. After that it is all me... because they are all sharp, they will all pass through if they don't hit bone mass, and they will all kill...and you can make any broadhead fly out 40-60 yds if you properly tune your arrows and your bow. But at the end of the day, it has to do with where the arrow hits...and 6 out of 10 times the arrow does not hit where we think it does on a coues, they are that fast, only going frame by frame over kill shot videos we have taken did we learn just how much these criters move... and that is why we wait hours unless we see the deer go down...bump them once and you will spend days looking for something you will likely not find. Recovery has less to do with the broadhead than most people think. Shoot what you like...aim very low and forward and a field tip would work... just my .02 cents... ... By the way has anyone had the Rage heads not deploy all the way? My buddy Jason had Heart shot his coues this year and the entrance and the exit hole in the chest cavity were the same size as the hole in the heart pictured... less than 1 1/2 inches... and it was a 2" head... that concerns me. http://forums.coueswhitetail.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=23440 If you read the link above (or already have) you will notice that most of the deer are hit very low & forward, Jason's buck has blood all over the legs and that buck died with 50-60 yds. 6 of the 7 bucks in that post died that quick... all with different heads fixed and mechanical... it is shot placement, and "string jumping" not broad head... I promise. Someone else mentioned the NAP Blood Runner, my buddy Sam shot his buck with one and it was the most devistating hit out of the 7 bucks in my January Thread... having helped to butcher all the bucks that head is indeed wicked IMO... I'd like to hear if others have seen the same. Cheers.

    Traps & Stretchers

I just picked 3 random traps from the pile and and set each one... a Blake & Lamb #2, a #3 Victor long spring, and a Victor #2 4coil... All three worked fine...as I mentioned all need to be reworked and boiled, etc.... but I have lots as you can see and the first 3 I grabbed worked fine. I about had a heart attack when i checked what new traps cost...LOL.. so if someone is in the market we can make a deal that works good for both of us.

Ethics in Hunting and in Life!

So very true... to bad more folks can't live their lives by those words. The world would be a much better place....
  20. Well January 2011 seemed to Scream past us.... I think it seemed short do to the deep snows and I truely think the deep snows really changed the dynamics to the hunt... It seemed to move the deer and you really had to work to get them found and we did manage that more than once. As a group we once again went to Wackin' and Stackin' the coues bucks and I have to hand it to my family and friends... they really have perfected the short recovery on archery coues deer bucks!!! It has been a fun month and I can't wait to share all the successes with you all... but as you can see the month isn't over and we are still trying to stick a few more so I will post pics as soon as I can! To those still hunting.... GOOD LUCK!!!!!

    My December Trophy AKA (Cedro)!!!

No... there is very little left to interpretation. Either your dog aided in the taking of game or it didn't.... either it harrassed game while you were hunting, or it didn't. Why live in a world of fear... enjoy your time outdoors and stay with in the rules... simple. The Law/rule states very simply that it is illegal to use a dog to TAKE big game (other than lion & fall bear). It says nothing of being in the company of a dog while hunting.... if you use your dog like a bird dog and jump game and shoot it... well then you have a problem. Until then don't scare a guy into thinkin' he can't take his dog to woods with him. Especially for a guy who goes to the woods a lot alone (and doesn't hear well, like me) it is nice to know you got someone watching your back. Cheers and once again Congrats on the buck! Lots of folks talking about it!
