    Poll: For or Against

Please post below in One Phrase, why you voted the way you did. Or you can choose to vote and not say... Lets NOT on debate on this thread. We should just lay our best reason on the line and vote. It will be interesting how many different reasons we can show for and against. Please remember that we are all hunters and we all have passion for our sport, keep it clean and to the point... ONE PHRASE!

    Bow for sale

My Cousin drew her first elk tag this year after having her first successful archery coues hunt this year... she is loving the archery game and is going to upgrade to a new Hoyt Vixen and is selling her old bow. I bought this bow new for my wife, it has been a short recovery on every animal that has been touch by an arrow from this bow. It has not been abused or beaten up on long 4 wheeler rides. It has only been used from a ground blind, it has never been up a tree. This bow has been great to our family... It is a Martin, Phantom Magnum.. I am not certain of the draw length at the moment... I believe it to be about 26"ish... and when my wife had it it was about 25 inches, I believe. The limbs are 40-50 lbs... but have had it down to 38lbs or so... This bow comes fully set up and has a quiver full of arrows. $375.00 obo. here is a short recap I copied and pasted... Short, accurate, and dangerous is the way to describe the Phantom Magnum. The Phantom Magnum is so compact and light you will barely know that you have it with you. The short axle length allows you the maneuverability that you need. The popular Fuzion single cam system is the driving force behind the Phantom Magnum. All the speed, power, and accuracy you could ever need is there ready to be released. Slip into the woods this year with the Phantom Magnum. The Phantom Magnum is available in Phantom Camo, Red, Blue, or Purple. Available in right or left hand. Fuzion Let-Off 75% (optional 65%) Axle Length 33" Brace Height 6 1/4" Mass Weight 3 lb. 7.6 oz. Draw Length 25"-30" Draw Weights 50#, 60#, 70# IBO Speed Rating 310 FPS

An interesting question for you all...

Passing 300inch bulls is one thing... but passing a 320+ bull in 6a is a bad Idea unless you are willing to go home empty... Besides... unless you have a 320 bull on your wall already, you will piss down you pants leg once you are in bow range of a solid bull like that... I have been blessed to have hunted and seen a fair number of 350+ bulls in that unit over the years, but I never encourage anyone to pass a 320+ bull there unless they "Know" they can do better... Like... already have better found. Just my $.02 worth... Best of Luck on the hunt.

    April Fools Lion

That is an Awesome pic with your dog way up in the tree... good job! Been a lot of kitties put on the ground this year and yet we aways seem to find new, fresh lion tracks... you can never thin them out! My buddy and his partner have taken 20 this season ... I love it!

    Eberlestock Packs

My J107 is the BEST hunting, scouting, guide pack I have ever used here in AZ.... It has it all for me, without getting too big. The Blue widow may be better for long range backpack hunts or bow hunting... But, I have only used mine so far for packing meat... and it does well for that. I have a buddy that really likes his X1, but he uses a packframe for meat haulingso it is plenty for him. If you are looking to own just one... the J107 dragonfly is the ONE...IMO.

    Archery Elk Tag 11M

First off... welcome to the site, and congrats to your buddy on the bull tag. Forums like this are a great place to get a wide variety about anything hunting related and since you asked...I'll give you my $.02 worth... I believe in doing the best you can with the best you can afford... Meaning, if he can't afford a new bow then make due with what he has and be Good with it... My first bow was an POS Proline shooting XX75's the size of your finger and I was not capable of shooting beyond 40 yds with it... With each bow I have purchased since I have either extended my effective range, or shot flatter, or quieter, or something... That being said, if he can afford to buy new then buy new and if not picking up a 1 or 2 year old bow is not bad either. But I believe that you get what you pay for, you can't get Swaro quality in optics for $200... and you can't uy a bow with the Quality of a Hoyt or Mathews for $400 either. I recommend shooting several bows from those two lines if going with new equipment. I don't know where your buddy lives but don't let him buy a bow at BP or Cabelas steer him to a bow shop with a good reputation, Example: Flagstaff has Bull Basin, and Payson has Chasin' A Dream Outfitters(a sponsor of this forum)... At Chasin' a Dream you can check out both new and consignment used bows... and talk with someone who has used most of the equipment he sells... it is important to deal with a pro shop that knows enough about hunting to match you up with equipment that you need and that will work for you. So many times I have seen guys buy something off of a shelf because "that associate at the store said..." and it is obvious that the associate has never tried to use that product…LOL. Anyhow.. that got long, but good luck to your buddy and tell him to just get wicked good with whatever he ends up with, don’t overextend his, or his equipment’s ability…

AZGF will be back in to lawmaking in 2011

Well put Eric. I personally believe it is an issue of perception... someone perceives a problem and then we need a rule. People “feed” wildlife all across this state for many different reason: who doesn’t love to see critters form the front or back porch, wildlife watching, photography, hunting, ranching, farming, and so on… it is a byproduct of many things and all the animals of the ecosystem benefit from it. It can be argued that more deer are harvested off water sources than off of bait in an August hunt. Regardless of what makes a hunter successful it will make someone jealous or disapproving… As Mr. Q illustrated above it has always been a take, take relationship between the AZGF “management techniques” and the hunters…. And the hunters always lose, regardless of the intent. We may or may not see the rulemaking process this year but if we don’t, we can count on the next opportunity the proponents of this rule have they will put it up for 30 day review and try to pass it…. There is only one real reason to support a rule like this and that is if you don’t support hunter opportunity… because in the end it is just that, an attack on the women, children, and less physically able hunters who have the desire to be outdoors and share in hunting success. Baiting does not guarantee you success by any stretch of the imagination… if you have a hot doe tied to a tree in a place where bucks don’t come, you won’t see a buck… period. Most of the hunters that I speak with that have hunted over bait all say the same things… 50% say I shot my buck as he was passing by… and the other 50% say the buck stopped just long enough for me to take an ethical standing shot. Rutting bucks could truly care less about eating, they have for more primal thoughts than food in during the month of January. Let’s face it… there are 50 reasons why archery hunters are more successful today than they were 10-15 years ago… should we make rules against every advancement in technique and equipment in the last decade??? No… lets be real, it is in the human nature to progress in abilities. There is nothing sinister being carried out by my fellow hunters who are feeding more squirrels and jays than deer… Nor by the hunter who sits where 4 trails come together or on a small seep… it is all just hunting. Mountain lions for example use every advantage they have to best these prey animals and since God did not give us the physical attributes of a big cat, he gave us problem solving skills… we are predators just the same. At 35 years old and of sound mind and body I don’t have to hunt any one particular way or use any one method but as I age my successes will fall off and I will have less chances at the perfect stalk… I sure hope that I still have quality hunting opportunity when I get to those days…. the animals will be on the mountain either way.

FS Trail Cams & "Bear boxes"

I am selling all my Moultrie cameras and Wildview cameras and buying a couple new ones now that Chasin' A Dream Outfitters is caring the 2011 Coverts in stock! I have 4 Moultrie D40 cameras in "Bear/Security boxes" (only 3 shown, one still in the woods for more 2 weeks), I have one extra box and a "parts" D40 camera. All of the D40's (4)have been great cams... all have average about 45-60 day battery life and the picture quality has always been pretty dang good, IMO. (will include a few pics) Each Camera will be sold with a box and an sd card, two of the boxes have a cable locked to them as well. I have two original cardboard/plasic Manufaturer boxes that can go with the first 2 sold. I Have NEVER had a camera stollen while using these boxes, and they have seen lots of folks... they will keep the bears and everyone (except the really dishonest) out. $100 per box, camera, & card.If someone (one purchase) buys all 4 I will throw in the extra "parts" camera for Free. Thanks For looking! Please post here if you have interest![/size]

That would cost you $2500 for that one camera... ... It has big coues on it. Cody glad you got them okay! Boy I retrieved my last camera.... and it had one of my Big Boys on there... his bigges drop/kicker went to about 3 1/2 to 4 inches long! Camera was safe and sound considering I had not been back to the spot since Sept... someone had put some mud on my lock to see if I was checking it or not, so I am really glad I had it in a Bear Box.... All four cams and boxes still forsale...

    Land Access

For me it is simple... maybe too simple... but here it goes. First, We own the wild life... every single person in this state, we do have a right to access what is ours. Second, checker boarding is a double edged sword to both sides... they (technically) cannot keep us off unless they properly fence and post each "private section" off from the State land (no one is gunna do that). However, by only having gates on the Private sections, they can stop vehicle traffic on all of it. WE own the "State sections" and cannot be stopped from non-vehicular access to those sections unless someone properly fences/posts the Private from the State... you have access to all. Third, when one small (or large) piece of Private blocks public land access, they are blocking us, (John Q Public) from lands and animals that we fund, support and own... there for I believe they (State & Land owner) have a couple of choices. Condemn the road and make it public, fencing both sides of it as private and post it, or declare eminent domain on the road way and fence/ post both sides, or give the land owner the option to provide for the cost of cutting a road around the private on the public land, allow the land owner to designate an “easement for public access on the private”, or simply leave the road open to the public with mandatory sign in and sign out. Yes too simple… however we need simplicity in this ever skewed, and bureaucratic system.

Well by yesterday about 50% of the bulls I saw seemed to have dropped, but still some decent 6x's packin' bone... skirted the bulls that had bone and worked the bald bulls and managed to grub a few browns and a ton of whites... left the whites in trees for next guys..LOL... my knees are a bit sore today!

    Traps & Stretchers

Spring cleaning is on my mind this week.... I was cleaning and tearing stuff apart and throwing away when I came to all my traps & stretchers.... I have held onto them for years because of my love for trapping... but they are just in the way and using them here on public land is a thing of the past...I'll pull a few out for nostalgic purposes, but would like to find them a new home where they might get used… all the Traps are on Drags, I have real mixed bag… #2 & #3 Long springs, #1 ½-#3 in Coil spring… most are double sprung….and even a few #3 dog-less… all will require reworking and boiling etc. but there are at least 6 milk crates full. Looking for a fair offer and a good home for them… so please post here if interested in them, all or part. Thanks.

    A couple sheds

Wow that is an amazing set of sheds! Looks like the white antler was laying there for more than 3 years before you found it? I actually found the pair to last years shed only about 40 yards from where the other one was. It was laying right in plain sight which was the interesting part. I gave it good effort last year to find the pair but maybe I looked to hard or was blind that day. Or maybe a critter drug it down a hill for all I know?. Thanks... I knew what i had when I found it... I thought it was off a 4 yr old shed I also had in my house, but when I got it home I realized it was from the 3 yr old shed.... it was in some very thick NE facing stuff where it go little sun but lots of moisture... it was kinda greanish..LOL. Amazing you found it only 40 yds away one year later! Maybe he left it the next day? Good Hunting! I'm off fo the next few days to find some treasures!
