The only way I've liked them is as meat sticks, chorizo, in burros after being deep pitted.

Congrats to your Dad on the Ram of a lifetime! Double H Outfitters and all of their guides are first rate including the Mattauch family, who is IMO, a pillar in the sheep hunting community. I have been blessed with the opportunities to guide sheep hunts for Chris Harlow & Tyson Hatch and you were in Excelent company in 37a this year. Congrats to you all!

We'd be fools not to acknowldge that $h*T Happens... but over all we must keep or desire to win in check and arrest our own stupidity before fall flat on our faces...LOL. I know we ALL have done and made mistakes... and I am not above admitting it. But the effort is ours to make and that is what this thread is about... I am glad that folks are still reading it and posting to it. On a side note: In my first rant on this thread I mentioned a bull that was shot by a client with the guide's gun at long range and that no one went to look for that bull... Well here is an update.... I spent a day looking for that bull while horn hunting in the spring... but did not look hard enough... an aquaintance was scouting the early bull hunt this fall and picked a large head very near where I was looking for the bull... and now the guide who loaned his gun to his client know knows that I was right for he has seen pics of the head... It does not remidy the situation but maybe it will prevent future stupidity...

Thank you everyone! As post script to our hunt... The snow flew for a couple days after the hunt ended and we still had 4 quarters hung high in a tree of our last day bull... The first of the meat and the head and cape had already been checked in with Round Valley Processing and Wild Heritage Taxidermy... and as soon as the storm broke Colton and I had our packs on our backs sucking icy air and fighting 6-12" of snow... We were still a couple hundred yards from the kill site when we cut our first lion track... At the kill site we had atleast 3 different lions... a decent tom & a puss with kitten(s)... We were thrilled to see that the boned out torso and exposed organs were what the cats wanted and they had to that point left our quarters alone. They had chewed right through the ribs a large enough hole to climb in and devour the organs, the sharp & exposed rib ends were covered in lion hair, and a huge hunk of lung laying next to the cage bore proof that we had interupted a meal... The meat we had hanging was almost frozen, we had to build a hatfull of sputtering fire to keep our hands working...HaHaHa... We loaded an additional 80 lbs of boned out meat in each of our packs and began our 2 mile slip, trip and climb out of the woods... It Dam near killed us... HaHa... but it was well worth it! We put over 225 lbs of just meat in Terry's cooler off that last day bull and my job was finally complete... and now I have one more lion on Donny's hit list!! -

Chef, Colton's bull is such a Cinderella Story for those of us that know him best. Colton needed and deserved a bull like this, like no one else... He worked hard all fall in the woods and made this hunt possible on his own... Sure I helped with camp, logistics, and daily phone & text pep-talks...and of course Mark was instrumental in being there as his second for the 3 day hunt & pack... but for all of us it is soo about him (Colton)... Just Awesome when a Great plan comes together and a most deserving tag holder prevails. Here is a great look at 59 7/8 ® & 55 6/8 (L) Main Beams! That cool twisted ped adds length! -

A copy and paste issue... I hope that is better, J! -
We had to wait out the snow after a Last day bull hit the the ground to finish the packing duties on the remaining meat we had haning in a tree. Before we even got back to the kill site we began cutting Lion tracks... We found 3 distinctively different lion tracts on the gut pile and ribcage, a kitten & puss as well as a decent Tom track. They had not touched our hanging meat but certainly would have once they finished the taste organ meat & rib bones... now I know why we have not seen many deer in that country as of late....

Whooooo Haaaaa! Great job Fellas,Congrats!!! I love it when a plan comes together!! Awesome!!!! -
This buck was killed by a lion, I believe. It is an easy head to part with if you dont have an emotional tie to it... Personally if I had disposable cash I'd have a room full of aquired heads such as this... I just love looking at one-of-a-kind and big critters.... I'd have my dam wildlife building if I could... Critters are cool! HaHa... I'd sure like to know what this buck sells for...

VERY DISAPPOINTED AND RATHER DISGUSTED
Coues 'n' Sheep replied to Shooter McGavin's topic in The Campfire
There are a lot of butchers that have no concept of caring for wild game meat. Ionly use and recomend butchers that A ) are well known for processing wild game. B ) do not belly ache about boned out meat. C ) are willing to trim an and all that is required to deliver store quality clean meat to my table or that of my hunters. An occational hair may show up... but it should not be common. Silver skin, fat, dirt, hair, etc should not end up in the wrapping papper, IMHO.... -
For real??? Bah HaHaHa.... Yeah that is what I'd do... Pick up a world class coues head, pay to have it mounted, and then give it to one of potentially many hunters that were after this deer but were beaten to the punch by Mother Nature?? What- tever... LOL. Would love to see this buck in a world class collection... hope he gets a mint for it, but if I'da found it it would never leave my house unless it was replaced by a replica mount.... Good luck with the sale.

I have an opening in my schedule for the late Coues deer hunt and we have some big bucks found once again this year. Here is one of them...(the TC pic is from this year 3 weeks before archery deer and he is a 6x8 non-typ.) This buck and I have "history", and I have hard horned video of this buck as well... know where he will be in the rut... I will be in the woods most of the next month so please call Jeremy at the Shop (Chasin' a Dream Outfitters...928-468-6181) and book your hunt with me. Here are also a few of the coues bucks I have been involved with the last few years... If you book a hunt with me our goals are a lofty 110" or nothing... Call today!
