    bullet selection

I think the mistake made in your case is that no matter what bullet you use, if you hit too high (above the center line of the cavity) you will have to chase game.... The kill zone is in the lower half of the cavity.... and two "drain holes" leave a better blood trail than one. At any rate... a Barnes X bullet brakes down elk shoulders like nothing I have ever seen...... and that will anchor them where they stand!

Lion Kill Found Under The Rim

Hey Josh, That Justin doesn't get on this forum. He and Luke want me to post a pic of that non-typical buck with the 4 eye guards on here but I haven't yet. That was a pretty cool find though, eh... PS: You made them both late for work last week when they showed you that head!

    Spot and stalk help

Well put KWP, I agree with you. I don't know anything about the 20x80's, so I can't say good or bad about them....

    Spot and stalk help

Save....Save.... Save..... and then buy some Swarovski 15x56's and use them on a tri-pod. Also a good spotting scope is worth its weight in gold as you try to decide whether or not to go after an animal or not. I just sold my ST 80 (Swarovski) spotting scope and bought the STS 65 HD (Swarovski).....both are awesome scopes, but I went to the 65 after testing both side by side and found the lighter 65 to be equally as bright and clear....even in low light. Good luck and good hunting.

    bullet selection

I shoot a 300 Wby Mag. and I have always used Barnes X bullets in it. We have had Exellent results with the bullet.... 2 Caribou, 2 Elk, 1 Mulie, & 3 Coues. My Son shot his coues deer with it this year at 610 yds.... the buck went 50 yds. My wife "dumped" her bull at 370yds and her Coues at 170 yds....both hit the ground on impact. All kills have been complete pass through, reguardless of what bones it has to go through. Very little meat loss even when large bone, like the shoulder is shattered. I have had no reason to use any other bullet. You have to choose a bullet that you can believe in. Good luck!

    Effect of wind

I agree with everything that coueshunter84 said above... follow his direction about grip and form. I think that you will have better luck with Carbon vs Aluminum.... but I switched to ACC arrows last year and think that they are even more stable....bad thing about ACC... if you miss, your $14 arrow is trash!! You will also find that practice is one thing, but once you screw your broadheads on you will have to do more work with plaining and wind drag. Good luck.... "Aim Small....Miss Small"

    Who Needs Mexico???

We are pretty sure that my buck and the sheds are not thie same deer. My buck grosses about 106"-107" and was aged at 8 yrs.

    Who Needs Mexico???

The big 111" typical has about 1 1/8" of deductions and has 17 2/8" beams.

    Who Needs Mexico???

Believe it or not the Non-typ. is my archery buck from this year (posted on archery page 15) and the the sheds were found atleast 8-10 miles away as the crow flies... Many similarities in the two sets. It was a great year for horn growth, too bad we won't have it this year....

    Who Needs Mexico???

Well.....az4life.....you are right about the manners, but I am sure that you are guilty of the very same "fondling"!! I am however embarrassed that you caught me....

    Coues Pic

Nice buck. Archery kill? Hard to tell how big in one pic.....hard to tell from that pic..... Unless that person has small hands, I would have to say 95-100"ish.

    MULTI PICTURE POST

Very nice collection!! I am jealous of how many tags you have had, but you made good use of them!!

    Effect of wind

I would shoot again when there is no wind, before you go changing anything. We have practiced on windy/gusty days at 70-80 yds. and have had up to 2+ ft of drift at that range. Best bet......don't make long shots in windy conditions.... Unfortunately there is no magic formula to figure how much drift. And you cannot anticipate if it is more or less windy down range. Also..... heavier & thinner arrows with smaller fletchings help reduce wind drift. Good Luck!

Not much for Rut this year

We have logged a ton of days and hours hunting archery Coues this year and have found the rut to be very "hit and miss". Normally it is much more predictable, but I think the hot & dry conditions have really strung out the the cycle. Many great bucks have been harvested this year and I was fortunate enough to be one of those lucky guys that was in the right place at the right time. I thought I might share my fortune with you all. This awesome non-typical (+/-107" gross) passed by me at 12.5 yds as he calmly "shadowed" a doe. She was about 30 yds ahead of him and I think that he was mearly checking her trail to see if she was Hot. A good and low double lung shot made him mine. I'd like to point out how tuff coues deer are.... this buck made a 140 yard "death run" with no lungs and a Destroyed left front shoulder.... thats tuff. Aim small....miss small.

    not a coues but ouch

That bull in the back ground (nice bull!) looks to be bugleing or tasting the air.... is this pic from the fall??? I can't imagine a bull being able to live this long with an arrow right there.... and the wound looks pretty tight.... not like an arrow that has been getting caught on trees and brush for months.... that would be a nasty festering wound by now. Bummer deal if it is a current pic......

Not much for Rut this year

We were fortunate to have a few, brief "bursts" of rut where we hunt. But, it was very hard at times to be patient in the field. We had better hope and pray for a lot of wet weather right NOW if we want things to be good in the year to come..... I am going to ask for a hard wet winter next year as well..... so if anyone here has an inside line to God please ask him for me...... Thanks for the compliments on our success. A lot time went into those bucks. I can't say enough about my buddy, Jason, and the effort he put into his hunt this year. He is truly becoming a GREAT archery Coues Deer hunter!

    Need Help Scoring this Carp

I don't want to sound like a Jerk..... but..... anybody who thinks that buck will gross less than 200" has got to be wrong. You only get one Spread measurement..... Look at how deep his forks are and that big 5th point on the right...... That buck has great length......and although I don't know that much about Carp Deer, I give this buck a gross score of 200"-210". Nice Frickin' Deer! Is he still roaming the hills?????
  20. Coues 'n' Sheep

    121 inch buck

I know a little..... They backpacked in for a couple of days after X-mas. There were three of them.....and all are very good hunters. They found the buck, new how good he was, but the closest they could get to him was 620 yds. One shot through the bread basket and Mark had the buck of a life time! A well deserved Buck for a good guy and an excellent hunter...... he has paid his dues.... this buck will go nicely on his wall as the largest of his many nice Coues deer.
