    Docter Binocular help

I looked through a pair of those on a sheep hunt in Utah a couple of years back. They are Awesome! Way to big to pack very far from the truck or quad...... but in Utah they are great cuz all the "locals" have made roads to the top of every hill already..lol. Those binos are on my wish list for sure..... it would be great for all your pre-scouting!

Go with Swaro's....... you will be a lot happier. I know a lot of guys that have given up their Doctors and bought Swaro's wishing they had done that in the first place. Just my 2 cents worth.......

The Journey Into Mexico! (start to finish)

Congrats, Jim to you and your Dad. That is quite the pair! Double Pedestal Mount, maybe??? You guys have a great story to go with them! Best father and son hunt I have heard of in a while! 'Goose' sure is a Great guy to hunt with.... and you guys took some Great bucks!!!! I agree with you on how you scored your buck, but had a question on your Dad's..... I was told that if a split point appeared to share a common base that you bisect that base and take both measurements off of the beam. I can't tell from the picture, but doesn't your Dad's buck kind look like a common base? Not that it matters... ... He is aToad!!! No matter what! I too have a ton of questions on how to score Non-typ........ Congrats, Again!!!!!!!

    Family Strengths

This has been a really fun thread to read..... I never really looked at these threads before this week and am glad that I found them! To all the guys at Phelps Dodge: Do any of you know Mike Goodwin? He works over there and is a hunter. Anyhow, if you do tell him Gino said, "Hello." and tell he needs to get on this forum! ...... I don't see him much these days since PD gave up the Blue Ridge Lake stuff. Well I am an AZ baby, too. Born in Phx. and raised in the Rim Country. I own and opperate a residential construction company. We specialize in Custom Homes, Remodling, Additions/Garages, Decks.......Blah...Blah....Blah..... you get the picture. We do work in the following areas: Starlight Pines, Payson, Pine, Strawberry, Kohls Ranch, Christopher Creek, Young, and every thing in between. www.andson-construction.com If you own properties in those areas give us a shout.... I love to work for hunters. As for my "hobby business": (I guess making a couple extra $ while having fun is called "business"..... although my accountant calls it a tax right-off) lol! I have guided sheep hunts for Double H Outfitters in AZ and Utah. I am now a team leader for Mullins guide service, specializing in trophy Elk & Coues.

    Whats In A Name

Guess I have a dirty mind...... maybe it is because you're a dirty Pre-vert..... but before I read this I figured "GRONG" had to be something totally warped... ... Glad u cleared that up for me Josh! LOL! Hey Falls!! Your handle cracks me up!! All those years ago when our Dads' worked together your Dad had a nickname just like that and everyone knows him by it!! That is cool how history repeats its self!!! LOL! This has been a really fun thread to read.... Thanks for starting it Mike. Guess I'll put in my explanation...... I love hunting. It is a way of life to me.... I live and work to so that I can hunt..... Coues Deer hunting and Sheep hunting are a disease. Once you catch the "bug" you are a lost in them..... forever! All the other animals that we hunt are great too, but more like a Passion....... Coues 'n' Sheep are my Obsessions!!

My buck won a biannual Pope & Young Award

Mark, I too, received that letter for my Non-typical Coues from last year and for my Desert Sheep in 2001..... It got me really excited the first time, but the thought of boxing up my mounted sheep (large pedistal mount) and shipping it across the country quickly calmed me down. Although, if I could afford to go to Lancaster and receive the award using a motorhome and a Cargo trailer.... I might do it. Honestly, that big public "Pat on the Back" stuff really is not for me.... The respect and recognition that I get from family and friends when they walk into my house and see my mounts is enough for me. I would rather spend my money on a bigger, more fancy mount than getting that award..... I mean, the nicer the mount..... the more respect you are showing the animal... in my opinion. Your buck is a Dandy..... anyone who knows you or that buck, respects you already for harvesting him. Atleast, that is how I see it. If it was a new Pending World Record my opinion would be very different though...... that is a Must GO!!

    Any bowhunter success?

Ya... he harvested his first P & Y Coues deer at age 12. He is kinda on my butt because I have not posted ALL his coues deer pics on the site...... but holly crap, he has 4 rifle bucks (one in NM) and 4 archery bucks (thought it was 5, but was wrong). That is a lot of posting..... guess I could still put them in the photogalleries. Might be kinda fun to see his age progression and the bucks too.

    Any bowhunter success?

Hey, Little Bear. Pretty cool, eh! You are right on those ages. And I have raised him since I was 18 yrs old..... married his Mom when I was 19. And yes, would whip any one who would argue that he is not my Son. Besides.... he is good looking like me. LOL!!!!!

    Any bowhunter success?

Nice buck crazy$COUES! Congrats!!! I am posting another buck..... today for my son, Colton. Colton is one of the best, if not The Best, archery coues deer hunters I know. He has logged more hours in the woods after a monster coues than any two hunters I know. This is his 5th coues buck with a bow..... while it is no "monster"..... it is a good buck that he is happy to have taken. Colton was fortunate enough to have seen 6 different bucks that would have taped at over 100" this January..... only one time was he able to get off a shot..... and was rejected by a tree branch that was between him and that monster buck at 40yds. He passed up bucks in the 80" and 90" classes day after day and logged in literally hundreds of does & fawns. It has been three years since he has posted this much effort and harvested a buck. Now at age 18 he has reacquired his passion for archery coues deer hunting. I can't express how wonderful it is to watch a young man come back to himself after a rough bout with his teenage years. Don't get me wrong..... he has logged in some hours in the past 3 years and passed up some Really Nice bucks..... but for us, he really didn't have his heart in it these past couple of years. So this buck of average size, holds the weight of a true Trophy for me as a Dad. And in the years to come..... when he does finally harvest the "Buck of a Lifetime" it will be more than special..... it will be well earned and Very well deserved. I am proud of you Son and Thank You. PS:::::: This is buck #6 from the "Honey Hole"!

    judging coues deer

I think that "judging" their score is something few people actually do. Judging them as a "shooter" is what most people do. Hunt as much as you can with all the good hunters that you can and "Ground Check" as many bucks as you can. Then you will start to have a feel for how to score them.

    Any bowhunter success?

I am posting this to pat my hunting buddy, Jason Scarbrough, on the back. He has been hunting archery Coues Deer with me for 6 years now. He and I and our sons spend countless hours scouting and preparing ourselves for January archery hunting each year. Jason has managed to harvest two nice 90+/- class bucks in the previous couple of seasons, amid countless freezing cold & "deerless" days. This year was not too much different than most years...... it started out REALLY slow for Jason. Days and days of NO DEER.... while we all saw deer he saw none. He suffered many days of what we refer to as the "Scarbrough Curse"......LOL! I finally broke down...... "Jason, it is time to head back to the 'Honey Hole'." I said...... He grinned and his reply...."You know I ain't Scared!" One year ago Jason harvested a monster fork with eyeguards in the now famous 'Honey Hole' (5 coues bucks have come home with us from this spot). His first day back.... Jason is forced to pass up another 90"+ Fork with eyeguards! He passed him up 3 times in 2 days! He passed up several lesser bucks and watched as many as a dozen does & counless fawns pass him each day. I tell him that we should get him out of there and hunt somewhere else, but he insists on "One more day". We got to our hunting spots late that day.... bad wind. About an hour after I had settled into the silence.....my phone rings......and it is Jason. I don't answer my phone when hunting, but he never calls me unless it is time to get out of the woods or something just died! .... "I just stuck a Monster!" he says..... I hit the ground running!! It took me about 45 minutes to reach him and we started on the blood trail.... 120 yds later.... we stood admiring what six long years of effort and patients pays out. A true trophy... 109"+ green! Over 20" beams and 17 2/8" of spread. This buck should make the top 20 P & Y ! We all here the stories of "beginners luck" and of "dumb luck", and good for those guys! Myself and Jason are not those guys.... we have to to do it, the long and hard way. Last year was my day in the sun and this year is his! I have been waiting for this for 6 years..... to pat my Buddy on the back for a buck of a lifetime! And to many more my Brother!!! Gino
  20. Ben Mattausch helped his brother, Billy, to smoke up a true Monster with his bow in the last couple of days. I heard he had been watching this buck since Oct. and final got him with a bow from 25 yds!!!! I'd like to hear the rest of the story and see the pics..... Big Time Congrats, Ben & Billy!!!! Anyone who has hunted with the Mattausch Brothers nows what a wicked good hunters and stand up guys they are!!! Gino

    Mles & Miles.......

Well, I finally got out to look again this Sunday and put on about 9 miles of bush wackin', but I found these 4 browns..... Nothing great but they are brown. Had three friends with me and they each found one and we found about eight or ten white horns that we left out there. I think I am startin' to get old.... I have been workin' too much to stay in good shape and the "boys" that were with me didn't have near the trouble gettin' out of that country that I did..... But they weren't packin' near as much bone over their shoulder either.....
