LMAO!!! Thanks Josh! I thought that I sent you a Text Picture after I shot it, but are not the only one that did not get it.... ... Don't quite understand how you send it to 10 guys and only about half get the pic????? Anyhow.... Yeah, I am real happy with how fast I got it back, too! Gary is a good guy and did a nice job for me as well!!! -
I had the need...... to get bloody!!!! I have been hunting my butt off this January and the hunt is drawing to an end. My Hunting Partner (Jason Clay), and I began hunting a brand new area this month. Our two spots were about a quarter mile appart and the spot that I picked is shaping up to be another "Honey Hole".....Showing lots of sign of a BIG buck & good deer sign all around. I have hunted it a few days and so has Jason.... We have never not seen a deer while hunting that spot and last week Jason had a 3 buck day.... He saw the Monster, that we knew was there, but could not get a shot at the rutting Beast.... and he saw the buck I shot today, but passed knowing the bigger buck might come back at any moment. Jason said to me about the buck he passed on.... "I don't know if you can pass that buck up, man.... He is Sexy!" We have not seen that big buck again, but we know he is there somewhere..... Today I told myself that if this buck or the two larger bucks came back..... I was gunna get Bloody! When I saw him walking down the trail toward me I knew Jason was right! He is not a monster but he is a perfectly symetrical buck and I am Jazzed to end the Drought with him. No "Tag Soup" for me this Year!!! Thanks to my buddy, Jason, without him this season would not have been as fun or as successful!!

Bla Bla Bla...... What box have you been living in..... .... Oh I for got.... You don't read well... my bad... You could buy the BTW video, Casey... I have one I'll sell or Rent to you so you can make an educated judgement.... There are PLENTY of Dead critters to prove that the VLD's are not just for punching paper..... There are also pleny of animals that were not recovered because they were shot with a target bullet. But of course, none of that comes to mind does it? Casey, What Gun/bullet or Bow/arrow/Broadhead combination doesn't have losses???? For cryin' out loud.... we all sure know that a .270 WSM with 140 gr. AccuBonds will kill a coues... if you shoot him 4 times. Obviously it is the Opperator and not the tool that Skews the results! If 13 year old girls can make one shot kills on bull elk at 385 and 450 yds.... with the Berger 168 VLD, then I'd say that it is a Proven Big Game bullet! Oh, and Casey..... those little girls managed to keep the skull plates of those bulls in one piece and the horns, too. Hey G/H..... Thanks for the Avitar!!!
-
Jason, what caliber are you shooting?? I found that 82 gr. of IMR 7828 was the best load with the 168 VLD in my 300 Wby. That probably doesn't help you a bit..... but thought I'd share just in case.

Most 30 mm tubes have enough travel for a flat shooting gun to reach 900-1000 yds real easy. The Huskumaw Scope I put on my 300 Wby Mag goes to over 900 yds on one turret revolution with a 168 gr. Berger VLD. Your best bet is to shoot a 7mm Mag., a 300 RUM, a 300 Wby mag, or something better balistics than those if you plan to shoot out that far anyhow. CnS The gun I'm considering putting the scope on is chambered in 270 WSM. The trajectory is similar if not a little better than the rounds you mentioned - depending on your choice of load. I already have the scope on a different gun but was considering making a swap to take better advantage of the the target turrets it has. The scope has a 1" tube and I just don't know about whether it will have the travel if I don't shim it or use +moa bases. I determined that from the factory setting I have about one and a half rotation before the travel ends. I have no intention of shooting game at those kinds of ranges but if I'm going to get the gun up for long range shooting I would like to do it right and have the travel necessary to get out to 800+ if for nothing else the ocassional long range target practice. Thanks for the help. I know that I am gunna get bashed for this.... but what about wind drift on the 270 WSM..... there are a lot of variables at those long distances...... As far as the bases that you are talking about..... I think those are more for guys that plan to shoot beyond 1000 yds. But I am not sure..... I would assume that sub 1000 yd shots will be no problem with standard bases. I have shot my rifle at 1000 yds and had a bunch of room left. But that is a question that might be much easily answered over at: www.longrangehunting/forums/ ......some of those guys are kinda brutal, but there are a lot of them that are a wealth of info. Good luck. CnS

FYI.... Mike..... The guys at Best of the West and John Barnes both use 168 Gr. VLD's in their 7 mags. They Swear by them.

I have the STS65 HD..... it is as clear as the standard 80 IMO.... I really prefir carring the 65 over the old 80 mm Swaro I had before. Spend the money for the HD and you will like the 65 just fine.... FYI.... The Zeiss 85 has a camera made by Ziess that mounts in place of the eye piece an it takes the best pictures!!!! Good Luck! Coues 'n' Sheep replied to cjw2222's topic in Other Big Game
It is an amazing bull... alive. Any hunter that would take pride in hunting and shooting a Farm Raised bull is a Putts.... There is NO pride in that... just a kill. No different than going on a Buffalo hunt in NM for meat (On a Pen Raised Ranch) and shooting one that is big and being proud of your accomplishment. The only thing that guy accomplished IMO is putting some REALLY high $$$ steaks on his table! Sorry.... I had to say it. High Fence is High Fence.... That makes it nothing more that a meat hunt. -
A FEW BUCKS !!!

Yeah, like score on that dandy buck??? Congrats to all. -
Congrats on the dog! I love that Camo Job!!!! How did you do that?? FYI... don't set that sucker on the ground and expect to find it again!! You ain't gettin' me on no Motor-Cickle!!
-
IMO..... Tim...... The 168 will do all you need here in the States.... and 300 RUM is not overkill.... it is a consistant flat shooting gun.... Good Luck with it!! However, You will want a solid bullet like a Barnes or Tropy Bonded 180+ grain bullet for the big/thick hided animals of the North (Griz) or of Africa.

Tim, I started hunting with them last year as part of my longrange set up. We tested the 168 VLD and several other bullets out of my 300 Wby Mag. The VLD's gave me the best group every time. We shot that gun on both of Huntn coues's daughter's (HC1 & HC2)bulls in December. Amazing results.... both one shot kills.... animals expire within feet of impact. One shot destroyed 6" of spine and the other turned all the vital organs into a protein shake! Very little loss of meat due to bloodshot..... almost none. The spine shot did loose some meat as it made a good size (as advertised) wound channel right infront of the shoulder almost all the damage was between the hide.....no damage to the cape. The Cavity shot entered behind the shoulder and did amazing internal damage but NO external damage..... All of the bullet fragments and all the energy remained in the cavity... I was amazed....never seen anything like it. I am going to try to get the girls to shoot it again on there pig hunts to see how they do on a smaller animal.... I called and talked to the guys that recomend these bullets and shared my exact results..... their reponse was that they performed Exactly as they want and as they advertise..... They don't want 98% bullet retention, but rather 98% bullet desintegration and energy tranfer inside the animal. I was amazed at how little meat was lost with this kind of bullet.... but I have not shot a coues or anything smaller with them yet.... Gino

You had to be smokin' somethin' on that trip! That ram was not nearly as nice as the one you shot. But, I am very proud of the fact that you took my maps and went right to the spot I pointed out to you and you found sheep right away! That proves my point about what a good hunter you are and how hard you worked for your ram! Awww... Come on, Buddy....I know you would dive off of that with me again if there was a dandy Ram layin' at the bottom!!! That first hundred feet was not that bad.... You did great coming down off that canyon side! You were a real trooper that day.... most guys would have quit before we got to those sheep... not to mention what I put you through from the time you shot untill we got back to camp 3 1/2 hours after dark that night. This is me, tippin' my hat to you, Buddy! Congrats, Eric!!! You harvested a Great Nelsoni Ram and you have Great Memories to go with your "Hunt Of A Lifetime"!!! I have got to give a Huge Thanks to our fellow hunters Bob Price and Brad Fulk!! They gave up over a half day of Mule Deer hunting on The Strip to help us pack that ram out of a wicked piece of country! Thank You for your help and kindness! CnS
