Long range rifles?
Coues 'n' Sheep replied to mattobertin's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Thanks AZ. Not to my knowledge, no. But they really should if they don't. Can't be that difficult for them to do. I did see a company on a DVD set "How to Shoot Beyond Belief" (which is a great DVD by the way - 10 hours!) that if I remember right would do custom turrets for any scope other than Leupold. I'll see if i can find the name. Kevin, Great first post! I think you covered it, and covered it well! I have the "How to Shoot Beyond Belief" DVD's as well and they are a Wealth of knowledge! That video was produced by Best of the West. They created their own turreted hunting scope as well, and the company is known as Huskemaw Optics. These scopes are very well setup for the, 1000 yd. or less, hunter.... I have one on my 300 Wby Mag and I love the scope so far. Just Google Best of the West and go to their site to find Huskemaw Optics.... With the info they provide and the help they give.... it is a much more comprehensive turret system for hunters..... the turret on my rifle is built for my gun with my bullet and load.... it even tells me the windrift at 10 mph. It also has MOA windage hash marks in the reticle. The first custom turret is included in the scope price.... and then you can have others made for extra $$. The scope retails for about $1000.00.... last I checked. Matt, For your original post........ I think that any of the 300 Mag's. or 7mm mag's are the best for heavy hitting at long range.... not too big.... not too small. I also like those lighter rounds... 270 wsm, 257 Wby. and others.... but I think the bigger rounds buck the wind just a bit better. IMO.... I took an off the shelf 300 Wby and dumped a $1000.00 (including muzzle brake) into it and it will hang with most custom guns. It still has a factory trigger that I have have had worked twice... and I prefir that trigger to my buddy's Timney trigger ( he says mine would get him in trouble). I don't know what my gunsmith friend did this last time but man is that thing Sa-Weet!!! All my original work was done by Answer Products in Michigan. Best of luck with your new rig! When in Doubt.... Don't Cheap Out!!!! TJ, We should Always support ethical hunters.... even if their style is different from ours (yours). CnS Oh.... and Casey...... We know your gun can shoot! We know YOU can Shoot! But obviously, you still get buck fever, too! Dirk D. -
salt and feed no more in 2009
Coues 'n' Sheep replied to wardsoutfitters's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
A solid 50% of the reason for this push is an outfitter (who shall not be named ) in Southern AZ who uses Texas style feeders and ground blinds and Boasts nearly 100% success rates..... It caught the attention of the AZGF a couple of years back. Couple this with very high numbers of archery hunters in central AZ and nearly equal rifle vs. archery harvests in those units.... and the public YAPPING & posting of pictures on the web showing, "how to" or "does this work?"... We will all now act surprised that this day has arrived??? It was a team effort..... If you only new how much "Big Brother" hangs on every word we write here.... Rather than use the management tools that the AZGF has and generate consistant harvest percentages..... they would rather focus on how to limit success to insure more $$$$ based on "hunter opportunity". And "WE" gave them another tool to use, by highlighting a "grey area".......... And next to go will be ANY item that "might" improve your success rates... How about optics, cameras, maps, GPS's...... and everything else you have in your packs. There is no surprise in this movement.... it is a done deal. They are just makin' a mess of things.... and we helped find the way to do it. CnS -
I'm with you my Friend!!! OH... You mean what did I put in for?? ....I'll.....never.....tell........ Okay.... We all put in together.... Elk- 42M archery (early), 39W, and 36B antlerless.... Ant.-42M Archery, 39W, and 36B antlerless.... Okay....come on! You know you atleast stared to smile once???? I just couldn't help myself.... it is a compulsive disorder.... Got it from my mother's side of the family. Dirk D.

Coues 'n' Sheep replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Ahhhh...... Just flopped down in my chair after hand delivering 21 envelopes to the Flag office, doing din-din at Granny's ( fat ol' primerib), and desert at the 31 Flavors (did you know that Tuesday is $1 a scoop night???). Hope ya'll didn't wait for me at the Olive Garden... Momma said she wanted steak instead of pasta, and so that is what she got! Anyhow.... best of luck to you all in the draw!!!! OH... ALMOST FORGOT!! extreme coues called me just as I got into Flag to make sure that I was, indeed, dropping off all his apps.... Ha Ha... man did I have him going for a minute about having left his in my other truck by mistake!!! He had enough time left to get to my house and make it to Flag in time..... I thought about letting him get to my house before I fessed up , but I couldn't do that to him...... ....It was fun to mess with a guy's heart strings for a minute!!!! Gotcha, Buddy!!! For all the times you got me!! CnS -

Back in mid-summer of last year the Super Raffle results were discussed on a thread here on CW.com and a new member ehunt posted that he was the lucky winner of the desert sheep tag in the raffle. The Supper Raffle hunter may only hunt specific Nelsoni units in Northern AZ. I was the very fortunate to get to hunt with Eric Hunt on this awesome "Once in a Lifetime" hunt. Many days were spent afield in different units and many rams were passed. I have to say that Eric is a man of physical and mental toughness. He hunted hard and glassed harder. He earned a First Rate Ram back in Mid-November.... One of the Largest Nelsoni Desert rams taken in AZ in 2007. He folded this ram up with a one shot kill at over 300 yds. It was a Pleasure and an Honor to be apart of such a special hunt and I gained a new friendship with a first rate hunter in the process. Congrats Eric and thanks for Finally agreeing to post your ram! I am sure Eric can tell the story of his hunt better than I can.... hopefully he will. I appollogize for the bad light in some of the pics.... we were in the mouth of a deep canyon, with a 1000 foot vertical drop infront and 600 ft vertical climbs on both sides. With light fading in the canyon fast we did the best we could, but the brightness of the giant gorge below stole alot of color from the pics. Gino

Hey Fellas, how about no adjustable sites.... or scopes..... this is about hunters, not target pros.... otherwise I'll bring Jeremy and his target bow.... then we can all lose together... Just an idea.... -

If you can't find him a home, send me a PM.... my folks might be able to take him in at their place in Chino Valley and find him a good home. Dad trains both huntin' and trial bird dogs... mostly GSP's.

2007 Desert Sheep Super Raffle
Coues 'n' Sheep replied to Coues 'n' Sheep's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Yeah those guys are alright And in case you were interested, Brad ended up killing a decent buck on the last day of his hunt. Not one of the monsters that the Strip is famous for, but not bad considering how tough of a year it was and what we saw on that hunt. Also, Brad is a sponsor of this site with his outfit, RioSonoraOutfitters.com, so check him out! He does some top notch hunts in Mexico! Congrats again ehunt on an awesome ram! I have talked to Brad a couple of times since we got back. He didn't seem real impressed with his buck, but was glad to have filled the tag in the end. I can't express enough how awesome those guys were that day. I'd drop what I was doing anytime/anywhere to help them out if they need it. We would have slept out that night if not for them. Great guys, both of them. Did we meet you that day that we got the ram, Kevin??? I am so bad with names and faces..... I can't even remember the name of Brad's buddy that shot that nice Mexicana Ram down south??? CnS -

Coues 'n' Sheep replied to AZP&Y's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Mexico
I would think that thing is worth more than 10 Grand...... ..... to the right collector. How about Cabelas, BP, or SW??? don't they buy that kind of stuff???? -
I have had Great luck with the Weatherby's in the 300 Mag. Free bore is suppose to increase the accuracy but I don't know.... I don't think it hurts the accuracy, though. The 30-378 is suppose to be good, and really good down range.... but it is a lot-o-gun...... good luck. CnS

Skinning and fur handling
Coues 'n' Sheep replied to AzTrapper's topic in Predator Hunting and Trapping
That is good info. That is exactly as I remember doing it. It is Funny that you mentioned the trick with the two sticks, it brought back other memories as well... we often used a pair of pliers to strip the tail as well. Once the hide is off though the fun Really begins.... You gotta get ALL the flesh and fat off the hide before you stretch it. We never sewed our green hides and never got docked for it either, but we never had any holes larger than a 22 short either. FYI.... a piece of log siding with a rounded end makes the best fleshing board I have ever used. Always put your hide on the Stretcher hair in till almost dry... then turn and let it finish drying with the hair out so that the fur buyer can grade it.... completely dry hides are near impossible to turn. I have a ton of fur Stretchers that I never use if anyone needs some, I'd be willing to part with some of mine. CnS -
Hey lark, Keep us posted on what those VLD's do on the R. Boars!! That will be some good info. thanks.

TJ, Mike told me you bounce.... so I'd just role you over the edge and when I catch up to at the bottom I'd pick you up and dust you off for the pictures! I think Eric had concerns about whether or not he would bounce if he made a wrong step..... No Worries he made it just fine!!! -
