Gotta love a guy that has the Beans & Franks to make a judgement call and Act upon it!!!! Good luck with that Custom!!!! May I recomend the Berger 168 gr. VLD???? I do like that bullet for elk!!! Oh... and good..... luck..... Looks like the Bear is out of hibernation and spittin' .270's......again.

Well im gettin better input that i guessed. I understand the ballistic similarities, only think i was considering is the actual delivery of KE, Rather than just the fact of putting the hole where i want it. as we all know it can get windy in that country to so thats another issue. Heck depending on the end of my scouting i may end up takin the bowtech.... depends how confident i am in gettin in on em. Then again with most of that country, even after the shot, visiblilty is pretty good compared to typical elk country for the most part and would probably see the elk go down if it did cover a bit of ground after the shot. Then again i always wanted a nice 300 winny.... RUM, RUM, RUM,RUM!!!!!!!

Thanks, i know. The best part is only dealin with 9 other tags. i spend most of my bear time in there and the bulls if ya get away are amazing! i can see the need for the 300 thats why i brought it up, gettin close has rarely been my problem but im gonna run into the same problem as with coues, not so much the animal needin the long shot but the country. Glassin up a 350 plus 600yds away at almost sunset would kill me. Plan on gettin out every day off ive got maybe shed hunt the area a bit. im pretty sure where the other nine will hunt and im gonna be no where near there. but i am really thinkin about the 300 maybe ill just blow some money. Whoooo Hoooooo!!! Field Trip!!!!!

I know that the .270 is plenty of gun for an elk hunt. However, in your unit (21) I would be ready, willing, AND ABLE to kill a bull at 400-500 yds. I would totally recomend a 300 Winny, RUM, Wby,...etc. Best of luck on a Fabulous tag!!!! CnS

Elk Loads for a 308
Coues 'n' Sheep replied to DBArcher's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
My first rifle was a .308 Savage. We used it on elk with factory loads for years. I only used 165 gr. factory ammo one time for elk and swore never again! I would stick with any 180 gr bullet in factory ammo from that gun. IMO However, I am not sure what kind of hunting you are going to be doing.... that might make the 168 gr. more attractive, too. Not much help... I guess, but my $.02, none the less. -
I'd spend the money on a Mark V if it was me... reguardless, you will love the 300 wby. We all do! Best of luck! CnS

Here is a close up of the P/U head.... probably the my largest elk head pickup (300"-310"). I think it had been there for atleast 2 years.

Yeah... I couldn't hold on to the pics anymore.... that is why I take them. You walked 20-25 ft..... and I walked 20-25 miles. But finding mine was more fun!!

Hey y'all. Check out my bull tattoo!
Coues 'n' Sheep replied to DesertBull's topic in Non-hunting trip reports
That's awful, but just imagine all the dried up little old ladies with tatoos who are going to be around in 35-40 years. Yuck! You hit it right on the head! What will be really funny is seeing those wrinkled old petunias with everything else sagging but the implants! KP Prude..... very prude, fellas. -
I have found singles that way but never doubles.... You are lucky SOB, Jimbo!! That is a Sweet Set!!

Lucky you! Don't be picky....

I do know the odds on you deserving a swift kick to the Junk though. Not that I am bitter or anything. +1 +2
