    Butcher shops

Two shopping bags? Wow sounds like you scored!!! All in all, everyone has a valued point. I have cut for three different shops from time to time when they have needed me, all three shops don't waste anything. I understand many a people have had bad experiences in the past, believe me, we even hear about them. Gary, you have an almost exact formula. It seems real close. As far as pricing, it has a lot to do with electric and gas. But there is many more factors, paper, tape, knifes, roast netting, them handy little bags for grind, seasonings, cleaning agents, ie. bleach, dish soap, trash bags etc. dump fees, if there is help, gotta pay them too. Just my $.02 -Jeremy- Well put Jeremy! Operating expenses are what they are... can't expect guys to run a business for free! We have had several coues deer done by Terry at Round Valley (South of Payson) and have consistantly gotten a white kitchen garbage bag full of meat back on each one.... I'd guess 25-30 lbs of meat plus suit and seasonings, etc.... Again... just a guess. Terry does all our processing.

    Being patient after the shot....

Thanks for the props, guys! Here is one that I am just now working on as a part of my Rule of Thumb, things.... I have come to the conclusion in recent years that a high double lung shot with an arrow is not a quick recovery.... Hits around center of body or just above, are a 3-6 hour wait to insure that the buck has expired.... .....again weather and temps allowing.

    Check out this desert buck!!

Nice buck, Ernie!! Hope you get him!

    Windage issues

c4c, I too am a righty that can easilly shoot right.... I find that when I don't shoot a ton that my mechanics suffers. I often shoot right because I am not holding through the shot... it will also make for a larger "group" at longer range. It is a natural reflex to try to hurry up and see where you hit.... and it does move your shot to the right, IMO. Before you go moving anything try counting to 3 after you shoot, before you alow anything on your body to move.... might help.... might not....

    Being patient after the shot....

Hey all! Great input. I know that we all may not agree with some of the opinions of others, but if you see something that goes against your grain on this thead Don't point it out, rather just write you own post showing another point of veiw. I have spoken to Amanda and "the Hall Monitor" and we all don't want any debate on this thread... it will simply be deleted. Every post so far has been benificial for me and others I have spoken to read , Thanks!!! I'm gunna touch on an issue that I beleive is KEY to recovering game quickly with a stick & string. A while back we had a member that lost a buck on long shot. I asked him if he would give me details on the hit after he found, shot, and recovered his buck about a week later. At that distance he knew that he put in the wheel house on the buck, what he did not notice was that it was a touch high. Clipping one lung only.... and the buck was still alive one week later. These critters are a lot tougher and more resourseful than we give them credit for. And this is my point of this post........ The kill zone on any animal is NOT anything like a 3D target, if you want high success recoveries, IMO. I tell EVERYONE that will listen to me that the bottom half of the body is the kill zone, anything above that is low percentage recovery. I also tell eveyone to stop aiming at the impact side, center of mass on the animal.... Aim for your EXIT HOLE. If you can invision where you want the arrow to leave a hole on the opposite side and hit that exit, you will almost always recover your game. For all my Archery Coues Deer Fanatical Friends here is a tip! God placed a 12 ring right on the side of a Coues deer for all of us to aim at!!! It is the lil' white patch right at the back of the elbo.... that white patch covers the heart! I even shoot at that spot from an elevated possisition. A few years back I was sitting a treestand and had a doe and fawn working up the draw past me when the doe's head perked up and looked behind me. Here he came bee-lining straight for her! I hate to stop a coues deer for the shot cuz it gives them the opportunity to react (yes a coues can jump your string at 14 yds if allerted). I was shooting about 30 degrees down at 18.5 yds at a walking buck.... At full draw I kept repeating, "White dot, White dot...." I held my 20 on the front side of the dot (on the elbo) and let her fly! I saw the arrow hit at the back edge of the dot! The buck shot out to about 30, then 40 starting to slow as he reached 50 he stopped turned to go down hill and died on his feet, tumbling back down the hill!!! When I got down I walked over to get my arrow and saw the most amzing blood trail I have EVER seen..... blood spray 3.5 feet up on the bushes on both sides... all the way to the buck. A blood trail HELEN KELLER could have followed!! What I left out was that the buck was slightly quartered walking past and the arrow exited in front of the leg, also cutting throught the front foreleg on exit... that is how low and forward I hit.... when I gut the buck out I found that at that angle and that far forward I cut the top of the heart off.... and had it been a perfect broadside my POI would have center punched that heart... white dot = 12 ring on a live coues!!!! The moral of my story is this.... I think that you CANNOT aim too low on coues deer..... if you miss low you shoot under them cleanly. On elk I no they have a heavier rib cage and brisket, make that statement less true..... But Blood in the cavity of an animal holds the organs in place allowing the animal to live longer. If you pull a drain plug on the oil pan of your truck it ain't going very far! Put atleast one hole in the bottom or close to the bottom of a critter and you just let all the oil out of the engine!!! I have never seen a low (cavity) hit on a coues that did not result in death! Again, my $.02....

    Being patient after the shot....

I'm gunna keep going.... hoping someone else will put up some info. I will not go after any animal rifle or archery in less than 45 minutes unless I can see that they are 100% dead.

    My Lion Story

Dude, There are other sites if you want to flame on someone..... Acting like a hemroid on here will make you no friends and frankly, we don't want to hear it. You are obviously not a bow hunter... or rather not around bowhunting enough to know anything about what happened to Shorty or to the critters in the story. That Cat was sore for a day or two from the bruising and basically a superficial wound that is much cleaner than a bite or a puncture from a sharp stick. And as for the buck... if you spend time a field hunting anything at all, you will eventually fall victim to a similar deal. By the story it is very probable that the buck jumped the string and the hit was a flesh wound of some sort.... a flesh wound generally starts with a weak blood trail and then either stays weak or gets heavier, and then just simply fades away to nothing. Flesh wounds from arrows often simply close up and heal, unlike a flesh wound from a bullet that creates a hole and allows air bourne bacteria access to the wound. We have observed antelope bleeding out both sides of their necks rutting does all season long, and then fully recover with nothing more than a scare to prove that they survived it. And to ASSume that Short was unethical in his actions and to blindly attack a guy that is sharing a story, that likely will never happen again in his lifetime is just, Crap. Is the story only worth telling in your eyes if there are trophy photos to go with it??? We all have our high and low moments when hunting.... we live for the highs and often are just searching for a pat on the shoulder or a nod of understanding on the low days. Shorty, Both stories were great and thanks for sharing! I am real sorry that you got hosed on the fairytail ending, but that was one helluva day on the mountain... win, lose, or draw! Next time..... there might always be a next time.
