I've been shooting a Remington 700 XCR chambered in 300WSM for the last 6 years and I absolutely love this rifle, however, purchasing ammo is a tad bit pricey. That being said, this particular rifle LOVES the Barnes VOR-TX 165gr TTSX ammunition and I am wondering if I should try and duplicate a hand-load to the factory specs or just continue to bite the bullet and buy factory ammo. (Looking for an excuse to get a re-loader) . Has anyone worked up a load similar to what the factory stats on this ammo are? Without looking at the box I believe they list the velocity at 3130fps. Anyone? Any input/advice would be greatly appreciated!

And if his deal falls through I will take it.

Winchester 88 .308 Pre-64 Lever Action with Scope
DotShot replied to gmcbob's topic in Classified Ads
I passed this same rifle down to my oldest son as it had been passed to me by my father and to him by his father. They are very nice shooting rifles! Whoever decides to take this one home will not regret that decision. -
I'm not interested in the gun but, whoever does buy this if you are looking for a scope to mount on it i have one for sale. Its a Silver Leupold VX II 4.5-12x40AO with a Kenton Industries custom turret calibrated for the Barnes 165gr TTSX @ 3130fps. It will also come with a 4" sunshade and Leupold STD 1" rings. The only reason I hijacked this thread is because the turret on the scope is for a 300 WSM (my apologies to jwdodge01 for the hijack) SO if you are interested PM me and we can talk price.

So this year I decided to ask my wife if she would like to put in for a Whitetail hunt in an attempt to get her interested in my passion for Coues deer hunting. She agreed and I put her in for one of 2 hunts down at Fort Huachuca and as luck would have it she was drawn for the first non-junior hunt that started on the 16th of November. Now, one must know that my wife hadn’t shot a deer in thirty years with the last one being when she was 14 and not to mention that the deer she shot was taken in South Texas hunting from a blind over a feeder, much different from how we do things here in Southern Arizona. She decided that she wanted to use my Remington 700 XCR chambered in 300 WSM as she has no issues shooting large caliber guns. Now this gun is dialed in pretty nicely shooting Vor-Tx 165gr Barnes TTSX bullets and is topped with a Leupold VXII 4.5x12-40AO with a custom Kenton Industries turret. Up until the hunt she had shot this rifle 2 times and was pretty dead eyed with it. We Departed our house on the 16th after I had just underwent a procedure to try and eliminate chronic low back pain that I have suffered with for years. We headed for Fort Huachuca after the procedure and arrived at our trailer that I had pulled down the week before for our son’s junior hunt. Well, we didn’t get down and checked in much before dark and only had about an hour to glass a little bit which proved fruitless so we called it a day and made our plan for the next morning. We awoke early on Saturday morning a gathered all of our gear, packed our breakfast and lunch then teamed up with a good friend of mine and his son who had a Juniors tag for the same time period. As we discussed the plan out by our vehicles the light rain began to fall and I had visions of a horrible morning hunt but much to my surprise by the time we got to our glassing spot the light rain had ended and the wind was minimal. We gather up all of our gear, tripods, binos, chairs, backpacks, and firearms and proceeded to walk the 100 yards up the hill to a very good glassing point. Once settled in I decided to put her behind my Docter 15x60’s and gave her a relatively quick class on how to manipulate the tripod head as well as pointed out a very good hillside that consistently holds bucks. We had glassed for no more than about 30 minutes when she glassed up her first deer, a doe, feeding on the hillside. Shortly after the doe she tells me she has another deer and he has horns. I quickly relocate and put my Swaro’s on the buck to get a good idea where he was and sure enough the deer was indeed a nice little 2x2 with eyeguards. I asked my wife if she wanted to take him and she stated that she did at which point I lased the deer with my brand new Leica CRF-1600B rangefinder and the deer was at 666 yards. Knowing this was beyond her range comfort my friend mentioned that if we managed to work over to a little knoll that was just down the hill we could get within 400 yards and option we quickly agreed upon and set off. We left my friends son behind in some bino’s to keep an eye on the buck and make sure he didn’t give us the slip which proved to be a smart move. Once we got set up on the knoll I proceeded to get the gun set up on another tripod that was topped with my Triclawps gun clamp. Once all set up we began searching for the buck which proved a little challenging due to the dense vegetation. After consulting with my friend’s son we were told the deer hadn’t moved yet and was hidden to us behind a small juniper tree. We picked up the tree he was behind and began the waiting game hoping the buck would give my wife at least one shot. After a few minutes the buck began to move from our left to right in a straight line but always managing to keep himself behind some sort of vegetation. After a few frustrating attempts to get a shot at him as he passed through very small openings, the buck took a trail that would lead him into an opening that would give my wife about a 10 second opportunity for a shot. As we waited for him to hit the reach the opening I had time to laze the opening which ended up being 382 yards which I dialed into the scope and got her set on the opening. As the buck entered the open space it looked as though he was not going to hesitate for a shot but as luck would have it he did just that. I was in the binos and heard my wife take 2 deep breaths and then BOOM, I saw the bullet hit the deer right at the shoulder but told her to reload and get ready for another shot, a shot that was not needed. I watched the buck run about 30 yards down the hill and go white side up and ceased all movement. She had told me from the moment she found out that she had been drawn that if I got her on a buck she would connect, no matter what, a statement she made good on. I think what made me the most proud was the fact that she glassed up the buck and closed the deal just as she said she would. Now most of you will consider this a small buck and that is fine but to her it’s a trophy because she did this pretty much on her own. I am proud as heck of her and I think the excitement I showed really caught her off guard. One thing I tell all the folks I talk about hunting too is simply this, I get as excited today when I am successful at taking a deer as I did the day I shot my first, and when that excitement is gone then I need to hang up my rifle. Below are a couple of pictures I took, the first is the 2x2 Mulie buck my son shot on day 1 of his Juniors hunt (251 yards) and the second is my wife and her first Coues buck and first deer in 30 years! Congrats Baby, you never cease to amaze me with all the things you do!

I just purchased a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50mm (30mm tube) for my Remington 700 XCR chambered in 300 WSM. I already have Leupold standard 2 piece mounts on the rifle with a Leupold VXII 4-12x40 (1" tube) so i'll need to change out the rings. My question is, will i need to get the Standard High rings or will the Standard medium rings work? If anyone has any experience with this type of setup I'd really like your input.

I'm going to chime in on this as I think its an interesting subject to discuss. During the first October hunt I took my father (74 and has never killed a Coues) and my wife's boss (had never even fired a round at a deer in his life) down to 36c hoping for a chance at a buck. Opening morning I glassed up a bachelor herd of 4 bucks (3 forkies and a spike), my dad picked out the biggest of the forkies and dropped the hammer on him at 503 yards. Later that afternoon one of my friends who was with us to help glass glassed up 2 spikes at about 470 yards and as luck would have it they made there way right to us and gave my wife's boss a broadside shot at 180 yards. He missed the first shot and connected on the 2nd, and let me tell you you'd have though he had just killed a monster by the way he reacted. My point is simply this, not all of us who choose to hunt are after trophy bucks and we'll settle for whatever comes our way. I was raised to never pass up a buck because you never know if that is the only set of antlers you'll see. Some people have moved on to the trophy aspect of hunting and that too is OK just remember not all of us look at the animal as the trophy but rather the entire experience.

Headed down to 36C in the morning to help my dad on his hunt that starts on Friday. I bet I'm more excited than my dad is....I LOVE this time of year. Good luck to all those holding tags, remember, if you cant shoot straight.....shoot often!

Looking to sell my bumper pull toy hauler at the first of the year. its a 2007 Octane ZX T21 and it has pretty much everything. @ electric lift/lower queen beds, couch and dinette collapse to provide 2 more beds, Onan Microquiet 4k generator, fuel station, convection microwave, 112 gal fresh water tank, 35 gal grey water, 48 gal black, 25 gallon onboard fuel station, new tires (maybe 200 miles on them), to many options to list. This toy hauler will hold 2 full size quads as i put my Honda Foreman 500 and my Polaris Sportsman 550 in it easily. I am looking to get $13k for it. Inquiries can be made through PM or you can text or call me (James) on my cell (520) 820-1357. Here are pics of the outside and inside and can provide more pictures upon request. NADA has the low retail on this trailer at $13.7k and high retail is $16.5k with a listed retail price of $25.3k so as you can see i am not looking to make money by selling it at this price.

Have any of you Polaris Sportsman owners found any solid gun and bow racks that use the lock & ride system? I am really looking for something that is sturdy and will hold up well.

I remember the Jojoba bean craze of 30 years ago. I picked beans with my family for several years and actually made some money. I recall making about $900 after picking the heck outta some beans. If i recall correctly, the oil from the bean was used to replace whale oil in cosmetics and various other health and beauty aids. I can even recall eating the beans while i was out picking them and to be honest they taste pretty good.

I bought a S&W BG38 w/laser for my wife and she loves it. She didnt want to walk around with a loaded semi-auto as she just didnt trust the safety, hence the reason she went with a hammer-less revolver.

36c October-November for my dad, November Jr. For my youngest son, November Ft. Huachuca whitetail for my wife, and Dec. Ft. Huachuca whitetail for my oldest son and I. Congrats to all the ones fortunate enough to draw a tag and to those who did not I'd be lookin for leftovers as I see it all I want is a chance to hunt, not a guaranteed kill.

After much searching and just as much frustration i finally found a place that will service a pair of Docter 15x60's i purchased about 7 years ago. When i bought the binos the eye cups were deteriorated and it was obvious that things internally were out of alignment. That being the case i was still able to use them. I sent them to Daniel Baldwin @ Mountain Optics, 203 Rimini Rd. Lakeside, MT 59922, he inspected everything and verified they were in fact out of alignment and is going to replace the eye cups. To have everything repaired and shipped back will run me $280 and i think that's a pretty fair price but i'd like to get some opinions from other users on the site, so that being said, what do you think?

Hunters’ passion for draw results overwhelms website; results now available
DotShot replied to Viper's topic in Elk Hunting
TO be quite honest, i don't think anyone could have prepared for the type of onslaught that the vendor faced immediately following the release of the draw results. They say 133,000 people applied, so based on that one would have to assume that the vendors website got hit with 133,000 request all at once, i don't know of many sites, aside from ones designed for that kind of bandwidth, that could withstand that. If folks would exercise a little patience it would go a log way towards preventing this type of scenario, i mean really, is waiting a day or 2 longer to find out going to kill us? Just sayin... -
Just because the drive shows nothing on it doesn't mean it is all gone. Unless you do specific types of formatting old data is still on the drive. There are various programs out their designed to access and recover lost data assuming the hard drive itself did not fail. Just do a Google search for data recovery and do your research.
