Nice Coues buck

If there were no signs of blatant poaching I would probably wire his rack to a large rock or tree limb, mark it on my GPS and come back in a few months and retrieve it. Unusual find,. -
Guess the score?
singleshot replied to TREESTANDMAN's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
Those are some really long main beams, good G2's and great G3's plus he's got G4's. I say 112 gross. Lot of character. -
My wife Suzy killed this buck on the last day of the ten day hunt in unit 31. We had really struggled finding deer during the previous days hunting. We ended up hunting country with a mixture of mule deer and whitetail. She passed on five smaller bucks earlier in the day before I glassed up this guy bedded. He was laying in the open but in the shade at around 12:30. He was laying facing almost straight away downhill at 230 yards when she hit him in the right ham. She was shooting a 257 Roberts with 115 grain nosler ballistic tips in front of 48 grains of AA3100. I thought he turned inside out on impact and made it a grand total of five yards. I recovered the bullet under the skin behind the offside shoulder. I was pleased with the penetration and the nice mushroom of this bullet. I had read stories of lots of meat damage and this was true. The hip was completely shattered into dust but the bullet held together and continued on through the far shoulder. I won't hesitate to shoot them again. Gross score 97 5/8 net 94 3/8. Big bodied buck, very thick through the chest.

Hey Jeff, I talked to John and your Dad one afternoon and it seemed we were all in the same predicament. Rusty told me that John and yourself had both killed nice bucks. I was glad to here that you both tagged out. It was almost a relief to here from John that you guys were struggling also because I know how hard you hunt. Photo's are real easy to upload onto photobucket.com. Once you figure it out. I have never had to resize or manipulate any picture, it just seems to work. Good luck to your wife on a great tag.

Boy That's really sad. I quit watching the outdoor channel becaus of the "hunts" they broadcast. Never would have believed it would happen to coues whitetail.

Looks like a big bear, nice head. I dig that 450 Marlin. I keep tossing around the 1895 Marlin but cant decide between the 45-70 and the 444. Like the looks of the 18 1/2 inch barrel but the performance of the 22. Congrats on the bear.

A few years back in Texas two hunters in a blind were seriously injured, one blinded and one killed when one of the men chambered a 30-06 in a 270 weatherby magnum. The leverage that is capable with a bolt action rifle will easily seat a larger caliber bullet into the case when encountering a chamber too small. The bolt came straight back and exited the back of the shooters head.

Lot of good advice here. Keep in mind your hunting Elk not Deer. An elks intelligence level during the rut lies somewhere between deer and javelina. Be very aggressive, run and gun. Don't worry about making noise if you are out of sight of the herd. Elk are loud animals and don't pay much attention to noise if their is other elk around. Do whatever it takes to get ahead of the herd if they are on the move. If a bull is bugling I prefer not to do any calling but sneak in as close as possible and wait things out. Eventually a herd bull is liable to run out a satelite bull or push a cow past you. Watch the wind. Practice shooting from your knees.

Not interested in the tent but will vouch for its durability. I have the 12 x 17 Montana canvas with two screen doors. No floor or stove jack. I put down a tarp for the floor and indoor / outdoor carpet over that. I have the quik kamp frame and it has withstood heavy snows. I have a friend who bought a bargain canvas tent, saved a couple of hundred, what a pile. Poles broke and the tent leaks badly. I have had to cut about six inches off the legs and shortened the rafters by two inches on each side because of shrinkage but the quality of the canvas, stitching, durability and weatherproofing is exceptional. Paid $1200 eight years ago. $600 is a good deal.

Cabelas or the Sportsmens Warehouse?
singleshot replied to drgonzales's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I live in Safford and was thrilled with the Sportsmans warehouse in Mesa. Everything I could have hoped for. I also have been a lifelong cabelas fan and will continue to be one. I bought a thompson Center muzzleloader from them in 2001, shot it about a hundred times, took it elk hunting in New Mexico and after it failed to fire twice they took it back!! Full discount applied to a CVA that dents the 209's like an 870 pump. Cabelas customer service is great. -
What is the farthest you would shoot a .270 at elk??
singleshot replied to drgonzales's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I also liked the stats on the new 338 federal. For an all around rifle the 30-06 is hard to beat especially if you handload. You can buy bullets from the 55 grain accelerator to 220 grain swift A frames. Another nice thing about the 30-06 is the millitary surplus ammo available at very reasonable prices. You wouldn't want to hunt elk with it but you could get familiar with your rifle quickly on a budget. One more plug for the ought six, you can walk into any sporting goods store in america, and a lot of gas stations and convenience stores and pick up a box of shells. Right along with a package of Ho- Ho's and a tub of dilly's. -
Check out the ballistics of the 160 grain leverevolution in 30-30. It's time to drag those old lever actions out of the closet.

I know a ten year old who drew a late bull tag in a great unit. No bonus points, not even hunters safety because of a departmental screw up. Good luck Mace.!!

I have killed bulls with bear razorheads, vortexes, and fixed blade broadheads. All have their goods and bads. Expandables may fail to open and sometimes deflect on steep angling shots. The best penetration I ever achieved on an elk was with a 125 grain mini max broadhead by vortex. The arrow entered the right ham and exited through the left front shoulder. Just one of those shots that everything went perfect. I have been shooting 100 grain four blade glue on muzzy's four about ten years now on a 16/64 Beman shaft and have had great arrow flight. Exactly the same as my field points. The last bull I killed at thirty yards the 1 inch muzzy broke through the top of the shoulder, about ten inches from the line of his back, penetrated the center of a vertabrae and dropped him on impact. I was very impressed. One problem, they don't make the 100 grain glue on anymore. Been shooting rocket ultimate steel 125 grain fixed blades. Stout broadhead, good flight.

Campsite Trickery
singleshot replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Several of my friends have been known to carry out rather large rocks hidden in their backpacks. It seems somebody is always bragging or complaining that they have the heaviest pack, this way you can eliminate any guessing. Just agree with them and keep on smiling. I also once placed a water snake in with the rubber worms in a friends tackle box. He screamed like a girl. -
I keep a canvas klien tool pouch with survival gear. Whenever I change packs I just throw in that zippered pouch and I'm good to go. I keep three of the cheap 99 cent ponchos a heavy duty garbage bag, space blanket etc. For fire starter try taking a cardboard egg carton and stuffing the egg holes with lint from your dryer. Pour on melted parafine wax and you have a dozen individual fire starters that will put out an intense flame in any weather for about twenty minutes. My pouch ends up being kinda heavy at about a pound and a half but it's proven itself on an inky black rainy night in the New Mexico forest. Thats another story.

Monday my father was in town for a Doctors appointment and he brought with him my wife's 257 Roberts that he had just finished restocking. She had broken the original stock this past deer season in a fall. The broken stock was one that he had also made. He remarked that we are on our own now and that he probably is going to quit once he's completed the waiting list. The finality of that comment crushed me, the end of an era. I have hunted since a boy with rifles carved in AAA walnut and my dad threatened to disown me if I ever brought one of those "tupperware" stocked rifles around. After taking my third Az. pope and young bull, and my biggest my dad was stunned at my success as a bowhunter. I replied "dad, you taught me everything I know". He replied, "I never taught you to bowhunt". And I said "No, but you lit the fire in my heart". He was very pleased.

Archery Arizona bull elk turn my crank! But an Alaskan Yukon bull moose with a sheet of plywood on his head with a bow is my dream.
