My son shot a cow elk in the shoulder one year with a 140 grain Partition out of a 6.5x55. Shoulder shot and the bullet exploded. Cow went 40 yards and piled. Emailed Nosler and their response was " terminal ballistics are difficult to replicate, the elk was recovered, bullet did its job." Ive found ballistic tips perfectly mushroomed and Trophy bonded bear claws in pieces. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

My understanding was that Jensen's had an enormous investment in SKS's and AK's and ammunition that was held up in customs. Clinton pushed through the "assault weapon" ban and they lost conex boxes full. Never were able to recover from the loss.

I ordered my first shotgun out of the JC Penney catalog and picked it up here in Safford in 1975 at their store. Ithaca side by side 12 gauge. I paid a little over $300.00 for it. Still have it.

I'm betting a new start up in Safford.

Nice buck and sweet rifle choice.

fairly modern 45-70 and a 1906 .30 Remington that was my grandfathers. Take that 38-55 out and get it done.

Don't let not being able to get that premium ammo ruin your hunt. My .243 loves 85 grain bullets but it will shoot 100 grain Remington core lokts into 1.5 inch groups and its a $300 rifle. If worst comes to worst get closer and use whatever you can find. Go hunting man you will be fine.

Youth shotgun
singleshot replied to Jacob...soaz's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Think about a NEF youth model in 20 gauge. Safe, built in basics of learning to uncock the hammer on a live round, single shot so makes you focus. The center fires are pretty much junk but the shotguns are solid. -
Listen to this guy.

My son in law drew an early bull tag in unit 5A. Anybody like to throw out a few Ideas on where to start? I'm not familiar with the unit, have never been on a hunt in the unit. What are realistic expectations of a mature bull? Thanks

I have one that I bought in the late 70's. Really accurate pellet gun and the 5mm was a great choice of speed and kinetic energy. Carried it on my trapline and would heart shoot coyotes and foxes with it. Bleeding was all internal. Nowadays it's heck on rock squirrels.

Model 12 is sweet! I have my Grandpa's, almost a hundred years old and its by far more reliable at feeding, firing and ejecting than my newer 870. -
Not available, Just some eye candy. The 35 Whelen and 25-06 would get lonely if I sold the swede. Built on Mausers also and look about the same.

Couple more Mauser's for ya Big Lake 6.5x55 Swedish 22-250

My wife's rifle. Can't think of a bullet / powder combination that it doesn't shoot really well. Nice to have one of those.

Not for sale just to drool over.

Talked to Wilcox auction this morning. Always have been great people to work with and very knowledgeable. Black Angus under 550 lbs. are bringing in considerably more than market quotes. They expect it to taper off some as the desert dries up and the feeder operations get stocked up. Got a couple loads of 450 pounders headed that way soon. Poor graze a few years ago has our cows out of synch and we are getting a lot of late calves. Sold off about a fourth of the cows early this year fearing poor green up. Looking now like we might hold back some of our heifers, you just never know.

The first pic is a Mickey Wise knife made in Alabama. Not an old knife but it's a nice handmade piece. The second pic is a knife that my Dad acquired in High school used. It resembles some of the Western knives but I can't find any identifying marks. It's somewhere around 80 years old.

My first thought was that the "single shot" was a mistake. Dummy magazine tube.

7mm-08 with a Hornady 139 grain GMX. Mature Bull. I have a picture of the recovered bullet somewhere. It actually weighed out heavier by a few grains. Wadded up under the skin on the far side in a nice mushroom. Entrance

Ive been here for quite awhile. I always enjoyed .270 and his contributions to the site. I personally would have been complimented that the people running this site would have thought enough of me to screw with me. Especially on April fools because every year he came up with some B.S. Seemed innocent enough and quite funny. Really surprised me that he wigged.

Is that how you grew up? Daddy went out and bought you a youth model high powered rifle, in a light caliber, spent extra money on "reduced recoil loads" because he was worried about how the "kick" might affect you? Took you out to the bench at the range, set you up with safety glasses, hearing protection, sandbags, nah probably a lead sled huh? He was worried about the recoil again wasn't he? Shot a couple boxes off the bench and then you were ready for the field right? Daddy locked your youth model, short stocked, light load shooting rifle into "the claw" and whispered into your ear "just reach over and lightly pull the trigger". Right? Probably have a whole shelf of "participation trophies" don't you? Buy that kid a a .22 rifle and a couple bricks of Blazers and take him out in the desert and let him shoot cans, bottles cactus patties, sticks , lizards and anything else you can think of to keep him excited. Make him shoot off hand, sitting, kneeling, prone, resting on a tree, resting on a rock. If you want, put a scope on it and make him throw it up, find a can in the sight picture, shoot once and then back to a safe position. Again and again and again. He will develop arm strength, routine, fundamentals and most of all instinct. When he does go out after big game that full sized rifle will flow with him and he won't struggle trying to find a sight picture like a drunken octopus trying to find his car keys. Worked for me.
-
7mm-08 full sized. Realistically in five years he will have grown substantially and maybe have drawn one elk tag. If he want's to go bad enough he will learn to shoot it well. Let him grow up with a full sized rifle instead of changing it all the time.

I have been........preoccupied!!!!!
singleshot replied to Non-Typical Solutions's topic in The Campfire
Thats awesome! I hope you can find a way to go to as many matches as you can. My son wrestled and they leave everything they have out there on the mat. When it was all over we really missed it. Sell the house, quit the job, bring in a substitute for a few days. Enjoy these days and congratulations to Cole! Wrestling at his level is fantastic.- 1 reply
