What a great buck and adventure! My wife and kids usually hide little notes in my daypack and write stuff on cans of food and such. It sure helps you to stay positive when your tired and cold.

The range finder spat back the distance of the four bucks feeding towards the saddle, 1,243 yards. I looked over at Sarahs rifle and realized that she was carrying a 6.5 so we backed up one more yard to make the shot unique and got set up :) Actually the distance was 530 yards which was too far for our comfort. Sarah was packing the "Swede" though. A 6.5x55 swedish Mauser wrapped in fancy black walnut by my father. My dad carried the rifle, I started out with it, then my son, got to keep traditions alive. Topped with an original Weaver K4 as it has been since the 60's, it has been the nemisis of at least 40 coues, Wyoming and Utah mule deer, as well as a couple of elk. Loaded with 120 grain Sierras which sometimes are found beautifully mushroomed, and sometimes seem to explode, it just seems to kill deer really well. If it aint broke don't fix it. We slid into a cut and bottomed out below the bucks which had now bedded, and crept out on a flat bench that I felt would give us a good shot. Sarah popped out the legs on the BiPod, rested the buttstock on my daypack and got set up for the shot as I readied my bino's and tripod. Sarah had a hard time picking out the biggest buck whom had bedded in the shade of a juniper, but after looking through the Swaros she had him pegged. She touched the Timney trigger and fired a warning shot just over the bucks back which was now at 270 yards and he erupted from his bed and started for the saddle above him. The biggest buck got crossed up as he neared the top with one of his buddies and she drilled the first one out just before he went over. She was shooting steeply upward and the bullet entered the back of his brisket and exited through his off side shoulder. Distance was 303 yards, a great shot! The old Swede has struck again!

***SNAKES STILL VERY MUCH OUT

Red meets yellow kill a fellow, I'm thinking coral snake. -
Thanks for posting the link red rabbit. It definately is groundhog day. Sarah's most recent buck was taken about 500 yards from the one in the link. Notice the extra kicker on the same side, same place. Two years ago we made the exact same hunt on two bucks bedded in the same saddle as this years bucks. One of which was a solid 100" three point. Again the "warning shot" while in his bed and no chance for a follow up shot before they got over the top. 3 weeks later I glassed up the same 2 bucks, within 30 yards of where Sarah had missed him bedded. They fed through the saddle where this years pictures were taken and I have not been able to find them since. I hope to this year as he should be a stud.

2012 Bears in the Pears Video
singleshot replied to JACK's topic in Black Bear or Grizzly Bear hunts
Congratulations, on the bears and the video. That was really nice. -
I bought a 12x17 montana canvas from cabelas 13 years ago. The kwik kamp frame is an internal frame made out of 1" pipe. It was the frame cabelas offered at the time. It is extremely stout and I have had 10 inches of snow on the tent with no problems. I have had to cut the legs and shorten the rafters once due to canvas shrinkage over the years but it still does not leak anywhere. I had screen doors installed in each end as an option, no stove jack, spread out a tarp for the floor covered by indoor outdoor carpet.

Buy a Montana canvas and a kwik kamp frame and be thankful they did not answer.

Disappointing Load Results 7mm-08
singleshot replied to rossislider's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
My daughter shoots 39 grains of aa2520 with 139 grain hornady interlocks out of her NEF . Nothing fancy but proven effective on deer and elk, javelinas, and a couple of coyotes. This load shoots consistent " minute of bottled water". -
Buying a Polaris Ranger after quite a bit of research. What do you guys think about the Rangers or Rhino's?
-
Just left the ranch today. Used the ranger all weekend. It has never seen a paved road and has over 1900 hours on it. It is a 2002 model and has been used for everything a large ranch can throw at it. The floorboards cracked the first week, mine did also on my 2010. All in all it's been a great dependable machine.

I didn't read anything about a bobcat, or monster bucks?

We have two labs, they are very eager to please. We have indoor cats, and outside chickens, calves etc. they respond very well to a verbal scolding, When they act aggressively towards anything that we wish they would not. I would not worry about cats, point your finger at the dog, raise your voice, he more than likely will never pay any attention to them again.

I also carry the LCP in 380. I carried an XD 40 for a couple of years and it always got in the way while glassing, sitting etc. I would much rather have the 380 with 7 shots than a cannon in the truck.

My father called in three toms this morning in Unit 1. Rolled him up with a load of fours at 35 yards with his old L.C.Smith side by side he calls "Deliverance". Dad will be 81 this year

I have only sold one firearm in my life, a ruger 77 in 7 mag. We glass bedded it, floated the barrel, up pressure on the barrel, re crowned it, tried every load. Bullet combo imaginable. Three shot wonder, then start all over again. Changed out scopes, rings, bases, never so happy to get rid of it.

+1 except for the kit I bought didn't have a micrometer. You have to have one. I bought an rcbs model mike and it was expensive. You can get better ones cheaper at a good auto parts store. The powder manufacturers also publish a lot of load data for free on the internet.

I have the hundred dollar model, I think 1/3 hp. It has worked well and will spit out meat fast enough to keep you really busy. I hope you have some packaging help. Between ranch beef and game I buy roasts, briskest, whatever's on sale and grind them for burger. You get a lot better burger if you do this at half the cost of pre ground extra lean.

Received #21 this year. Never been drawn.

Good beer does not come in a can so get your favorite brand of swill, drink about a third of it. I like to chunk up some onions, garlic, cilantro, red peppers and stuff them in the can with the beer. Shove this up the chickens butt and stand it on the grill carefully so it will not tip over. Usually the chickens drumsticks will help keep it balanced. Cook it slowly over medium heat and baste the outside with your favorite seasoning and melted butter. I like to cook them for about an hour and fifteen minutes or so until a meat thermometer reads 170 degrees or you can grasp a drumstick and pull off the whole thigh. The biggest secret is to cook it long and slow. You can also stuff the can with fruit or whatever you feel might accent the taste. You really can't screw it up.

That would be a threesome for you, probably get thrown off a telescope or something! If they don't hurry NM wont be getting my 8 bills either.

Not topic related but I searched for quite awhile to get information on acquiring the necessary " tag" to sell bobcat pelts. Unsuccessful.

Expos for Auction Tags are bad

I appreciate the way you laid it all out there so that the " average joe" could interpret it. Even if your numbers are off by a million, a blatant over inflation was declared. -
Jack and coke is a little smoother.

Went for the head shot on a young rock sqirrel atop the wood pile at my house one day. Ended up hitting it through the mouth, broadside. It flipped and flopped and eventually drug itself under the shed. A couple of years later the dogs brought up a skeleton of a mature rock squirrel with summer teeth. (some are here some are there). Several lower teeth had grown completely through its upper jaw and one even came out of where its nose would have been. The upper teeth had done the same thing. These teeth were over an inch long and twisted and curly. I'm sure it was the squirrel who took the pellet to the face and his teeth never matched up again to keep them filed down. He had a womans nylon tangled all up in those protruding teeth and I guess he finally starved.

Best choice for hunting/field sidearm
singleshot replied to apache12's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I carried an xd - 40 for a couple of years, nice pistol in a sub compact, lots of fire power. I carried it in a tactical holster and it always seemed to be in the way. I carry a ruger LCP in 380 now. Sacrificed some fire power but the LCp fits great on my badlands shoulder straps or hip belt.
