Presmyk, my son just bought a savge 111 3006 he bought a bunch of winchester 150s so we could break in the barrel ,with factory load we were gettin inch and a half groups, now in all fairness we changed out the factory trigger to a timney and torqued the action screws the front one was barely hand tight we hadnt noticed till we replace the trigger but we are now getting about a half inch group with sierra game king 165s . we got really lucky with that rifle it shoots way better than we can . we got a lot of advice on that rifle and burnt up some powder and bullets to get there oh by the way that was at 100yds

Unit 33 youth hunt general advise on finding deer
KeithV replied to no worries's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Hey no worries, I dont know unit 33 but on the glassing part i like to look at the north facing slopes in the morning, when it warms up the bucks will come from the sunny side and find shade to bed. that being said i have seen them on a southern facing slope in the morning laying in the open or the shade of one tree. alot depends on the hunting pressure. find a spot early in the morning keep watch on a saddle from time to time while still scanning the hill .if i know the country well i will stay at one spot all day, and i glass all day as well, a buck will change beds sometimes or eat a bite or two then lay back down in the middle of the day. i have been in a spot for a long time thinking nothing was there and take another look and find a deer on a spot i have been looking at all day. i hope this helps i am by no means an expert these are just things that i have obsereved -
For that price range you have a lot of room i have 2 really nice leupolds a vari x 3 6.5 to 20 with target knobs that is awesome and a vari x 2 6 to 18 with target knobs . the vari x 3 is around 900 and the 2 is 550 i love both of them. that new nightforce shv has some really cool features,I dont think you would go wrong with any of those three and you got other options for what you have to spend.

Bear Down, this topic has been an interesting read. I was fortunate to grow up here in safford where the hunting and outdoors were just a few minutes away. I also had a father that got me out in the hills at a very young age i know a lot of the country around like the back of my hand. Therefore the thought of hiring a guide never ocurred to me but< I can see the point if someone grew up in the city or didnt have anyone they knew that hunted. The knowledge i have recieved from my dad and his friends was priceless. On any given day I can be behind glass and looking at deer after work and do exactly that a lot of people dont have it that way. If im not successful its my own fault for not being in shape or hoping I find him closer tomorrow haha. I love being out there and teaching my kids as well.

Are 15X's that much of an advantage
KeithV replied to joeinaz0's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
It may sound stupid but my 15s are more important on a hunt than my rifle! -

Coach, its pretty wild you brought this up, Just the other day i was thinking the same thing. I havent picked up my guitar in six months or gone fishing in a long time. This summer for a few weeks we had an empty house for the first time in a lot of years, my wife said this is weird we dont even hardly know each other without the kids. I have spent the last 20 something years at games banquets sometimes trying to watch two games at once. I wouldnt change it for the world. I really thought there was something wrong with me because i have slowed down on things, but i will throw another curve ball out i have five grand babies and thats a whole new deal haha! the responses on this thread are awesome and helped me see your thoughts in a different light thanks guys.
