This is a great place to view huge elk. Anyone with unit 10 elk tags try to call elk over the fence from 14. Am I right Jim Bob -

Every year this topic comes up and is proven wrong, but it is nice to dream about that unit 1 archery tag with my name on it because no one else put in. -
Butts, Hey this is Arizona we are all at least 2nd cousins. The GF web site info is real solid and could lead you to some very productive spots! Welcome to the site. Bob

Full disclosure, Maybe I have delusions of grandeur, but I believe I may have P.O. desert bull with one of my posts. I called him out on one of his opinions in a tone, manner and subject matter that should not of been brought up in a public forum. I called him out directly when i should of done it indirectly in a kidding manner which was my original intent. Once I seen other people piling on I new my intentions were taken the wrong way. Other people used quotes from my posts, so i could not edit them. I sincerely apologize for posting in that manner and probably should of PM'd him my apology's sooner, but i thought he was just chasing one of those huge carps he was posting pictures of. Again Desert Bull, l I apologize and hope you post again. Us Ron Paulist's have to stick together. Sincerely, Bob

Gino, Great job getting the whole family involved. What method were you using. Blinds. Tree stand, spot and stalk. What ever, an impressive % of tags being filled. Just plain awesome. Bob -

Being patient after the shot....
bobbyo replied to Coues 'n' Sheep's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
TJ, You are right about the third bed. When i saw it empty I had a real sinking feeling I believe it was in an area we would of eventually found. It was 100 yrds into the mesquite tangles and not the real thick stuff. Can a 28 inch wide buck get into the thick stuff? The positive was we had a light blood trail to follow. When he spooked he did leave the jungle and went back into the foothills, desert, cactus terrain. There were other factors that went into my thinking for the decision to be more aggressive and trail early. 1. We had no blood only tracks. Very faint. There is a huge population of deer. One group of ten could of walked by the location and washed out our only direction. 2. The river bed was expansive it goes for miles and is 300 yards across. The cat claws are so thick in some areas it is impossible for a human to pass. I felt it could easily find a spot to die where he never would be seen again. 3. My buddy's new best friend ( the other hunter) was riding his ATV up and down the sandy portion of the river bed and my buddy was about ready to blow a gasket. 4. I thought at some point he would get up to look for water and it was every where due to the rain the past two days and see reason 1. Yet excuses aside Tj is probably right. If we just went home then at 12:00 pm and came back the next morning. I might be cleaning a deer now. Please keep the comments coming there is a lot more mistakes to point out. Bob -
Being patient after the shot....
bobbyo replied to Coues 'n' Sheep's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Well maybe last nights post jinxed me, but I have a recovery story to tell. I am doing this for education purposes, but I am a little emotional about it still, since it just happened a few hours ago, so please ignore the tears. I apologize for the length ahead of time. Me and my buddy went to one of our favorite spots in a southern desert unit. It is not a secret place and there is always other hunters there especially on weekends. The reason is there is a very large population of carp. You can see over 100 does a day. Bucks are hit and miss. We spot a great buck 100 yards from the truck on our way to our glassing knob. Of coarse the buck has 25 does surrounding him. We back off and work our way 300 yards above him. We re spot him in the next canyon and he has joined another herd of deer. Now there is at least 50 does, one forky and a 3x4 carp with a 28" inside spread. We make a plan and my buddy is going to try to work around from behind the deer and somehow avoid the many does. He goes around and runs into another hunter. My buddy lets him go on the stalk we always defer in this situation and he completedly changes direction and gets to an ambush point with me directing from above (yes bobbyo uses radios ). Even before my buddy was in position the other hunter was spooking deer. Now there was deer running all over the ravine. With my help from above my buddy got with in 45 yards of the buck. he lets the arrow fly. He gives me a fist pump meaning a hit. Sweet. The buck is walking all hunched up. Classic gut shot pose. I start yelling to shoot him again. He doesn't. No shot? He tells me he hit the buck right in front of the back leg. I am looking no blood any where on the bucks body. The buck is falling behind his does. All hunched. He walks 100 yards and beds. on a rise. The other hunter appears and begins going after the buck. My friend see's him and intercepts him telling him he hit the buck. The other hunter claims he missed They have a loud discussion. The buck hears and moves 100 yards away and beds again. They start moving around and more does spook from some where. The buck trots 500 yards and enters a large dry river bed that is choked with mesquite and catclaw, a desert jungle. A different group of hunters was listening to our radio conversation. they want to help us track the deer even though they were hunting this buck for over a week. I was reluctant at first, but agreed when they said they just want to see the buck up close and seemed to genuinely want to help. There was three of them and I nominate them for hunters of the year. They tracked for over 4 hours in scorching sun. My buddy finds his arrow and it is covered in dark blood. no sign of guts. no green goo, no slime, no smell. just blood. This didn't go with the deer's reaction now we think liver shot? We wait, but I am very anxious. I think it might be easier to recover the animal if he was alive considering all the vegetation. My buddy is nervous because he is worried some other hunter might recover the deer. We decide with our new partners to wait 2 hours more about 3 hours after the animal was shot, and then search where I last saw him. I find tracks where i last saw the deer, but no blood. we follow the tracks, very hard due to the rocky terrain. we find where the deer bedded. No puddle of blood just blood soaked clumps of grass. Still no fecal material. Now we see from the tracks that the deer is running. Spooked him out of bed . We find drops of blood next to the tracks. The blood peters out to specks. we move it 500 yards and send scouts ahead to look for the deer. It is getting dark. My buddy scouts ahead. He see's a truck driving on the road with a big deer rack hanging above the bed. We run to the truck. We chase down the truck at a distance camp. My buddies buck! The hunters say that the buck ran towards them and seemed perfectly fine and they shot him in the neck at 109 yards. They shot it about 500 yards from where the blood ended. My buddy's shot hit right where he said it did. In front of the back leg through the body cavity about 3 inches above the belly. No liver there. I can think of so many mistakes I made it could make me cry.I have lots of experience and really have no excuse. Since i was not the shooter and not as emotionally involved I was in charge of the search. If you lasted through the story I would like everyone to comment on the mistakes made and what should of been done. Be as harsh as you like. Hopefully this would be a learning experience for others. This will age me, but I spent a lot of money on a optical range finder. you would try to match focus on two sides with a dial thingy. I never could get it to work. I recently sold it on ebay for 1 dollar. Boy was I surprised someone bought it.. Bob

Being patient after the shot....
bobbyo replied to Coues 'n' Sheep's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Great posts guys. The spirit and intention are great, but I get real cautious on discussions like this because I hear many gripes and complaints from non bowhunters about finding un-recovered animals out in the field with arrows sticking out of their skeletons. (if there is no arrow evidence then the animal must of been a lion kill right ). If we go on and on about all the hard recovery's or lost animals, I am afraid it will reinforce this myth with our non bowhunting brothers. I think we need to balance the long blood trailing, missing animal storys with some storys of short blood trails and easy recoveries. I would really like to emphasis two points. 1. This thread should not be just about bow recovery but animal recovery in general. The same principals and rules of thumb could apply to animals that were gut shot or muscle shot with rifle or muzzy. It is easy to tell when you wound an animal with a bow. You have arrow evidence, you are usually closer, ect. It is easy to think you just missed with a rifle when in fact an animal could be gut shot ect. 2. A bow is a very efficient way to kill and recover an animal. You hit the animal in the vitals 9 times out of ten it is a short recovery and a very, very easy blood trail to follow. Bob -
A level is a must for long range shooting IMHO. One other thing to think about. How big is your peep sight. If it is one of the larger peeps you might be moving your head slightly when adjusting the bow for 50 yards. and looking through the peep at a different angle. If this is the case the "rights at 50" might suddenly disappear with more practice only to reappear after a layoff from shooting. Is your 20 30 and 40 shots on line and then suddenly right at 50? Are your pins the same size? I use to have large pins at 20 -40 then used micro pins at distances beyond. This caused me to group offline even though the pins were vertically aligned. Try shooting with quiver off? If you are consistently canting your bow as mentioned you might have a group like this. slightly left at 20, dead on at 30 slightly right at 40. way right at 50 and then further right at longer distances. I am sure thinking about everything we talked about will improve shooting. The more you think the better you shoot right. Bob

So the fobbes helped with the 20 yarder? Just kidding. That is one beautiful buck in beautiful country. Congratulations to the hunter. Nice picture. Was the ground blind natural or commercial. I ask this because I assume it would not work to shoot fobbs through mesh. Bob

You did good not to push him. He will stiffen up overnight he will be limping more pronounced tomorrow, but he will be able to run off on you with three legs. he will just bed sooner. You are going to have to stalk him like an unwounded animal. It would be nice to have a spotter and other shooters. I think with a little help and little luck you will get him. Second shot.

Come on Smith. Us diploma guys can have a gentlemanly conversation. I will not cop out or get mad and I always respond back respectfully. We could certainly continue our therapy session in an open forum. If you don't respond I guess I will have to assume my diagnosis was right. Dr. Bobbyo

New G&F Rule would ban hunting over water?
bobbyo replied to bowsniper's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Mike, I don't hunt over salt or any attractant, but I am strongly opposed to this rule. I see it as anti bowhunting brought on by our rifle hunting brothers. The reason is the huge coues deer bowhunters are shooting over salt. The rifle hunters look at it as bowhunters stealing their trophy's. Would this ban be at all proposed if salt could only attract young immature bucks. I think not. I also fear this ban is a done deal. HOW MANY HUNTERS ARE TAKING THE OTHER SIDE WITH THEIR CALLS. Besides the fix is in. If you could bet in Vegas on whether this will pass or not, you know which side all the smart money will be on. I can already see it. Once the ban passes every time a great buck is taken with a bow there will be the whispers and stigma. He must of been shot over salt. Heck, I say that to myself now. Salt hunters are the victims of their own success. I will keep sending G+F my opinion. Maybe there is a chance they will do the right thing. Bob -
Mr Smith, Lets dissect(very biological word) what you say for BS. You say you have a Wildlife Bio degree, yet you don't mention a job in that field. Is it because you can't get along with others or is it because your lying about your degree. You see it is much easier to check an actual job then a degree. So since you claim a non-verifiable credential you are obviously lying. How about this one. you said on New Years that you were 30 yards from two Coues deer, but could not get an ethical shot so you passed. You are either lying or hunting from a blind. I don't know which is worse. Just admit it your jealous. Adam is a good shot and your probably not, so you rationalize it by saying he is unethical. Since Adam can shoot better than me he must be unethical. he shoots deer at 95, yet I am more ethical because i can't even shoot them at 30. What you have is a reaction formation. Your ego cannot justify your inadequacy, so to cope in your mind you claim anyone that can shoot is thus unethical. Really a simple psychological defense mechanism that we all have, so I forgive you. How do i know this. I have a degree In Psychiatry. Dr. Bobbyo

Yes, The age i heard was much older than 13, but I can't remember exactly. I guess it was 22 since Matt asked when he rode up on his buffalo. Good thing it wasn't a 1 iron. Not even God can hit a 1 iron. Bob

Here is the story as told to me: Kid gets a tag. Buys a package gun at some store. Asks the guy behind the counter if he knows where to hunt . Guy tells him to go on some roads off of Parker canyon HWY. The boy and his Dad are driving down the road. The Dad pulls over to take a pee. The boy sees a deer while his Dad is peeing. The boy gets the gun and shoots the deer. They think it is a nice deer, but are not sure. They take it to a taxidermist. Ask him if it is a nice deer. Taxidermists tells them, "It is an alright buck. Might be number 3 all time." I don't know if the story is even close to being true, but it is a good story. Bob

Yea what a buck I am ecstatic Whoo Whooo whoo. Great job Adam. I think you should call it the redemption buck. I figured he was still alive when you said you trailed him a mile. Bob

Trevor, I am not picking on you because your out of state. I have given up on those other guys. There is still hope for you. Since you have never hunted coues you don't understand how naive that statement is. It is hard to get close and If you are spot and stalk hunting YOUR EFFECTIVE RANGE DOES NEED TO GROW. Because if it doesn't what you do out here will not be called hunting. It will be more like nature watching. Actually when I am stalking I don't try to get closer than 50 yards. 50 yards is my goal. inside of that the odds of getting a relaxed shot at a Coues go way down. Don't believe me. Please start a thread about spot and stalk coues hunting. Ask experienced coues hunters what distance they feel comfortable shooting and why. This thread was not about long shots. Its about recovering an animal. I am really sick of all these brother hunters putting a huge guilt trip on Adam. Actually getting to 95 yards to an unaware Coues deer is good stalking. Many times you will get busted at much further out. I really think Adam should not feel at all bad. He should not lose any sleep about the animal. He should go out this weekend and drill one at 110. Bob

TEMBRY, : You are one funny cat. I love it when someone from a small state with over 1,000,000 WT. gives their two cents about distance limitations to us long shooting barbarians in Arizona. Heck, if I lived in a state with over 1,000,000 deer I would probably limit myself to 30 yards. Alas I live in a large state with an est. WT pop of 85,000 scared deer. From a previous post you said you plan on filling your slam by waltzing out here to Arizona and whacking a deer in two weeks. Do you plan on keeping shots under 50 yards? It is possible keeping to that standard sitting in ground or tree blind, but bring lots of books because you will go many days without seeing anything. I mean not one deer. Be prepared to shoot a yearling. Last year I guided a dude from Wisconsin on a Jan bow hunt. He had the same expectations as you. He has killed trophy animals all over the world. He tells me," Bob, I will not shoot anything under 90," I told him we will see some bucks that big, but " How far can you shoot." "I have a pin all the way out to 50 yards." After 5 long days and many, many blown stocks and some boring days in a blind this trophy hunter with standards starts taking 90 yard shots at spikes! Yep those standards sure can change. Tembry a little advice. Don't comment on hunting in a state you have never been to and get an 80 yard pin sighted in. Bob
