Any other lucky 23N Early Archery Bull tag Holders here?
couesmagnet replied to bonecollector777's topic in Elk Hunting
I think its great when other people shoot whatever bull they see on these awesome hunts like 23 north archery or early rifle. I would rather have the other people that drew the tag shoot the first 280 bull they see so they are on their way home and out of the unit very quickly. Every time we see another 300 incher heading out in a pickup, well that's one less dude we have to worry about messing with the big bulls we are hunting. It's a win win deal for the 280 dude because he's happy to have a nice bull down with lots of venison , and we are happy to see him rolling home thus helping our own quest for a big bull. What you don't want is the opposite where everyone is after a big bull that has the same tag, and everyone competes with each other the entire hunt for just a few big bulls. I hope there is a line of trucks heading out to go home on the second morning with a 280-300 incher in every truck. Good luck to the 23 guys this year, and may everyone but us shoot a beautiful 300 incher opening day. -
Nice bull. I met you guys about an hour or so before you shot it, while you were sitting in your blind that morning and i came in to check our cameras. That bulls carcus was huge, but to bad it died so close to the salt lick. It took several days for any of the other buffalo to start coming back. I had no idea that all the buffalo are shot off salt licks up there, and without prime positioning on one of those salts you almost dont have a chance to even see one. Great job on choosing that lick to sit that morning, and for knocking such a huge animal down with a bow. Awesome buffalo.

I said a prayer for the families as well. From our veterans to our fire fighters, its easy to take for granted what these people do for us on a daily basis. What happened to these fire fighters should be a sobering reminder to us all to appreciate what the people in these highly dangerous public service jobs do to protect us the public from so many dangerous events in our lives. I would like to thank everyone who has these jobs for their efforts. Makes a fella think he's lucky to be be an american.

I was talking with some other hard core coues deer hunters and wondered what other people thought. My question is how many bucks if allowed to mature to maximum antler potential will eventually get to the magic 110 mark. I don't know how many times i've seen a buck in my binos scouting that would go in the mid 100's, and turn to my brother to say , "i'll bet he's going to get really big in the next 2 years". I know it all boils down to genes and age, but how many deer would really end up over 110. We have shot several deer that we watched for multiple years, that never got over 110, but instead were heavy 105- 107 inchers, and that's all they were going to max out at. I shot a deer last year that the year before was 108, and he went 116.5 this year. We watched another deer in 2005 that went from a 110 incher to a 130 incher when we killed him. It's been my experience that less than half of the coues deer even have the genes to go beyond the 110 mark. I helped a kid shoot a verified 7 year old buck last year also , and the deer barely went over 100. What do you guys think the percentage of bucks in az that if allowed to mature would go over 110?

What a cool story , and on top of that he was a vet from pearl harbor. I think that all vets deserve something extra special in life, and maybe you guys being there was just that. Great job.

Sounds like who ever owned the place was ready to retire and got careless with a match late that night. Kind of like the old antlers bar in young over again. Sad to see marble burnt though, i have several memories there also.

Happy fathers day to all you fathers out there. The hunting tradition is usually handed down by fathers, and i would like to thank mine for spending time in the field with me at his own expense, both in regards to his pocket book and not getting anything when he took me at such a young age. Thanks dad!!!

That looks like a tank in the soldier camp area. What is really sad is that it happens so much across so many units. It's not just a few people ,it's a whole bunch of them. I would feel like such a scumbag i messed with someone else's gear, but it seems there are many that must feel proud of their actions. What's sad also is that some guys mess with others stuff just to get at the animals in the area for themselves, and then brag about those animals to everyone when they get them. I feel for you losing your 2 cams. -
Checked the cams yesterday, sorry date is wrong

Very nice bucks. Are the bottom 2 from south of the colorado river? Thanks for posting!! -
Becker your spot on, this is exactly how it works. No one with less than max can draw the top couple units.

I still have yet to see an albino version of anything in the field with my own eyes. Cool pic, thanks for posting.

No travis i haven't developed a system yet, cause i keep thinking i can trust my fellow hunters. I don't lock mine, but will be doing so this year. Sorry i can't be of any help here, but i would buy the strongest cable(maybe use 2 cables for one stand) to ensure this doesn't happen to you. You would think there's only a few dishonest guys out there, but there are actually hundreds. This goes for your cameras also. I wish you luck with your adventures in the field. Post some pics of your buck when you nail him.
-
Buy the cheapest one you can find. Lol. I had 3 stolen this last year alone, and 1 the previous year. There are a lot of very dishonest hunters out there, so be careful how much you spend. the gorilla tree stands are very good, and very lightweight to carry and hang if you want to gamble with your money though.Good luck.

Thanks loco, i'm pretty slow at times, and commonly need an explanation. Lol. I've only had 2 antelope tags in 25 years.
