Amazing Mule Deer Rut Footage and 4 Kill Shots!
couesmagnet replied to andygrand's topic in Mule Deer Hunting
What a rush to watch, great video!!!!! -
10 years ago it was hard to find people in any numbers who could shoot over a 100 yards, or at least thought they could. Give it another 10 years , and we will be talking about if 200 yards is to far with a bow. Getting rid of the over the counter hunts will be hard to adjust too, but it will have some unintended benefits for draw results, eliminating a lot of peoples second choices that would have been used on something else, but instead would have to be used on a previous otc hunt. Also the dedicated archers will have less people in the woods to compete with on the archery hunts, at least the serious one's.

Nice shot, can't wait to see the pics. Congrats!!

Well put scooter, i get your point, there might be less than 1 percent of archers out there that my broad brush doesn't apply too, and to those i apologize. I've talked to randy ulmer several times, and he is considered one of the best shots in the world, and even he won't take these long shots for the same reasons i have sated, and he's one of the best in the world. What does that tell you if it's coming from the gold standard so to speak. I can shoot very well out to 80 yards , but my max shot i am willing to take at an elk is 55. It's a personal call for each to make, that's for sure.

Great video , great buck, and awesome music. I was jacked just watching it!!

The archer that dedicates the time and energy necessary to consistently put arrows down range at long distances is same archer that studies his prey and learns its movements and when is the best time to put an arrow down range. I personally know several archers that can and have taken several animals past 100 yards without needing a second shot. They practice every day at long and short distances. DON'T for one minute think you know what's best for everybody, or every situation unless you are there. This armchair quarterbacking is really getting old. I for one am visiting this site far less than I used too simply due to your unwarranted and negative comments on situations you know nothing about. Everybody needs to take step back and wait for the story to unfold BEFORE the comments start flying..........................................Thread is done in MY opinion. There are several people on here that don't agree with certain things being said or posted about with regards to many issues in the hunting world. To say i don't know what i'm talking about, just because i have a diff opinion than others , well i guess that's your opinion. I spend more time in the field than 95 percent on of the people on here , and have more experiences with a huge cross section of hunters in the field each year than most have in a decade. I say this not to brag in the least, but only to prove the point that i do have at least a clue to what i speak about with regards to hunting. I can't tell you how many times i've had guys that can shoot rifles or bows that were so superior to my skills it was almost embsarrasing, but when it came time to shoot at a big animal couldn't shoot or where shaking to much to draw their bows in the moment. This is what i was referring too with my post, the mental impact of shooting at an animal instead of a target. This is a huge diff, so what did i say that i didn't know anything about here, and what offended you so much? Is it because i have a diff opinion. Practicing at shooting a target in a calm situation is diff than shooting at a animal in the field isn't it? When i say that practicing shooting at live deer would be the only real way to practice, i was talking about the mental side of things. Please tell me how else someone could test the mental side of shooting at animals instead of targets, cause if there is another way to sharpen the mental skills of shooting long ranges, i'm up for it!!! I respect your opinion also, but in my opinion and that comes from a ton of experience, i don't think it's right or respectful. Sorry if this hurts your feelings. Are there any other older issues you would like to rehash that i offended you with, feel free to vent some more. I wouldn't want you to stay away from the site cuase of my opinions. What else have i said in the past that offended you with , be specific please.

This all boils down to how much respect you have for the animals your hunting. Unless everyone's practicing at shooting at real deer with their bows all year, all these arguments are moot at best. This has nothing to do with skill at a certain yardage. If i only had a dime for everytime i heard from a guy that could shoot over 100 yards but yet in the heat of the moment couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with a giant buck standing at 30 yards less alone than 140 yards. It just a simple measure of respect for the animals, unless someone's practicing on shooting at live deer , then their not practicing shooting and thier not as good as they think they are period. We all know the factor that gets thrown in when shooting at a live animal, mainly mental control, and when such extreme distances are attempted , the practice should fit the situation, not a orange dot on a target.

Johny blaze, it just seems like more big deer are killed off state land cause you see more of the pics from bucks killed from az verses mexico. There are plenty of mexican nationals hunting down there killing super giants that your never going to see a pic of cause they don't even know about coueswhitetail.com or speak english for that matter. Also there are literally thousands and thousands of tags on state land so just by the numbers of hunters alone it makes it seem like more big bucks are killed in arizona, but if you broke it down ,hunter for hunter, there are far more big bucks killed in mexico each year per hunter in the field. I would say we only see a few pics of all the mexican giants killed each year while we see 90 percent of the pics of arizona deer. The amount of deer taken by non mexican nationals isnt even close to how many are killed by mexican nationals. if mexican nationals pulled out all their bucks that are sitting in their houses and entered them, the entire record book for coues would be turned upside down over night.

Both D units hold some pretty nice deer . it's beautiful country, and i would agree with apache7mm and hoss that there are some hidden treasures in D. Good starting point would be goat camp at the base of mt turnbull. World record non typical coues was taken there many years ago. apache 7mm or hoss might want to look on those flats on the left hand side of the road that goes to goat camp right before you get there, we've seen a couple high 180s mule deer bucks there over the years. D is a great unit in my opinion.

The primary reason bucks are way bigger on average in mexico, period , is because it's private land. Everyone who goes down there is hunting basically a private hunting preserve. There isnt a ranch down there that gets hunted even 10 percent as hard as state land in arizona. The deer are def. not as wary, how could they be when they barely get hunted. How many guys go down there and shoot big bucks hiracking which couldn't be done in arizona for a 90 incher. I go to mexico also but it's for taking it easy knowing it's not even close to as hard as arizona. Mexico is what it is, a private ranch hunt, and it's a whole lot of fun , and a way to get a much much bigger scoring buck with much less effort.Almost everyone's biggest buck will come from mexico, and there is an obvious reason for this as stated earlier. Can't wait to go there myself on january 2nd. I'm leaving the hi rack at home though, just can't stomach all that driving all day, and relying on pure luck!!! You can also run cameras in mexico, and they won't get stolen cause everything is private. I would recommend everyone should go to mexico at least once to see what state land might look like if it didnt have 800 tags in a unit, but instead had maybe 6 or 7 tags on it like mexico. Good luck to all going this year and have lots of fun, i can't wait myself.

SC Rez 2014-15 Non-Member Coues Lottery Draw

I have a few things to point out and i'm only speaking about the non tribal hunt. The november hunt on the res. is no different or special than any october hunt in az in just about any unit. This is a tough hunt and a buck in the low 80s to upper 80s is a realistic expectation with 7 days of hunting required to do so. The january hunt is still tough and i would take a december tag in any decent to good unit on state land over any unit on the san carlos. The january hunt is a hunt for a low to upper 90s buck if 7 or so days are spent hunting. While there are some pretty good bucks on the san carlos, there probably isn't a place in az with a higher lion density. I speak from a ton of experience both on the november hunts and january hunts from going with friends and family over the last 12 years or so. I can guarantee that out of the 75 january tags available for non tribal members, there will be less than 4 bucks that break the 110 barrier and 90 percent of the bucks will be under 100 inches or less. Beautiful country of course, but the juice isnt worth the squeeze unless you get lucky. 2000 spent on gas and scouting any reputable unit in az for a october hunt could very easily yield the same results as a january tag on the san carlos if not exceed. Maybe if someone hired a guide on top of the 2000 then the results would be higher by an average of 5 inches , but the guide would be another 2500 bucks. Mexico begins to smell much better after putting all this in perspective. Again the san carlos is a wonderful place but it's far from being filled with giants like some might think. To put it in perspective i spent 22 days straight 2 years ago in january , and last year i spent 19 days straight in january. In 41 days of pure rutting activity between 2 years of pounding the january dates, i saw 2 bucks that might go 110 or so , with 90 percent of mature bucks being around 90 to 95 max. just my 2 cents. -
Here's the deal. I shoot a 180 grain nosler partition out of a weatherby mark 5 ultra light rifle. We have been hunting with this head exclusively for 10 years or so. We have shot several animals over 500 yards over the years, and knock on wood haven't lost one yet. I want to take the next step so to speak , and start shooting shots longer than 600 yards for coues deer. My friends tell me i need to switch to just about anything other than the nosler 180 because of the ballistic coeficient of the nosler head itself. Last year i had the opportunity to take a shot at 765, and with the turrets on the vari x 3 long range scope i decided to take the shot. Dialed in the clicks, and rolled him on the spot. Is there a reason to switch from a nosler head to a better ballistic coeficient head. Is the better ballistic coeficient head more accurate than the nosler, or does the higher ballistic coeficient just mean it shoots flatter? I would eventually like to shoot out to 850 yards or so , as it will allow me to hunt deer i haven't previously been able to hunt because of terrain issues. Should i switch from a nosler head to something else, and if so what head does the most damage and is the most accurate? Fyi, the nosler head does a tremendous amount of damage , so at least i'm happy with that aspect of it's performance. Kind of new to the stuff so take it easy on me fellas.
