I think I would kick my own butt if I did that. Sorry to hear, but yeah, it happens. The Fever gets you.. I was really down after totally messing that chance up but seeing my brother with the buck was awesome. Ended up getting a mulligan cause 2 days later I shot a 113 buck at 450. I learned far more from my mess ups than when things went right.

I missed a 116 inch 4 point that my brother ended up killing the next day at a 150 yards 7 times once. I had a bad case of the fever that day. Crap happens. Could have wounded him on any one of those shots. I've seen far more mess ups under 300 yards in the field than over 500. Glad you got him and he didn't have to suffer anymore.

I don't even hunt 24 b but I'm starting to feel sorry for the guys that do with all this talk about it. I've been waiting for someone to say there's no more deer left in the unit. Lol. I'll bet there's a bunch I lions in there though. Looks perfect for them.

Why is it illegal to put cams in the wilderness. I've never heard of that???? Are all wilderness areas off limits to cams across the whole state?? Where does it say this is illegal??

This about sums it up, and it's totally true. Unless there's stone cold luck involved, you need to be up looking every other weekend starting in mid july all the way till the rifle hunt. In order to constantly harvest big bucks you need to have a couple back up bucks to hunt if something goes wrong with your primary buck. One of the most important things not mentioned is you have to get used to letting 100 to 110 inch bucks walk right on by for a chance at a really big buck. By the time we find 2 to 3 115 plus bucks we have over 3 to 4000 invested in those 3 bucks. Basically you need 10 weekends a year, several thousand to support those weekends, and still a lot of luck to be consistent on big bucks. It's all about the time spent in the forest and really has nothing to do with tons of skill. The skill comes from being out there a bunch and getting lucky, not the other way around. I would bet that out of the 15 or so 110 inch plus bucks i've been involved with, with family and friends , the average big buck costs us 2500 to find and kill. Don't think that the people that kill big bucks are that much more in the know about secrets and tips, it all has to do with spending enough time in the field to get lucky enough to find them. Between all the articles produced as of late with all the big bucks and the corresponding theories and strategies purported to work, it ALL boils down to tons of time in the field and lucky timing. I would bet that a newbie to coues deer hunting could kill a giant on a pretty regular basis if he had 25 days or more a year to scout. The only diff between a big buck killer and an average buck killer is time, not skill!!! Go get um guys.

190" coues killed in southern AZ?!?!?
couesmagnet replied to GreyGhost85's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I sure hope it's real, gives me hope i might get a 180 coues someday. At least they are out there. -
I would like to thank our forces also. Thanks for being brave for me and the people i know. Thanks for more than i could possibly understand!!!
-
I don't see it either bro, but it's actually been scored by 2 official guys in the low 290's. I'm still trying to figure out how a buck could get that big. If i shot that buck in the desert, i would probably hang my hat up.

This is what's gone wrong in the guiding bis today. There are so many guides out there grabbing their wifes sisters brothers buck from a long lost cousin who knew uncle larry's uncle who used to drink beer every once in awhile with cousin bob. It's not right and shouldn't be done. Post it if you guided for it , don't post it if you didn't, pretty simple and used to be the norm but not anymore. Nothing personal against shane here, just the new normal of outfitters in general posting other people's animals when they had nothing at all to do with it. i heard the buck was scored at 291 yesterday by a legitimate official scorer. biggest buck of the year and it didnt come from the strip, and didnt involve 500 trail cams. I would bow at the guys feet for pulling this off in the desert. Huge congrats to the hunter who was unguided also.

The original, and one and only kurt listiak who works at trappers den in show lo. There is no one better, especially on a coues deer!!!! His mounts are a must see to believe. If you can't get kurt to do it, clay does great work also in payson.

Can you actually still hunt unit 32? And a AZGFD mini-rant.
couesmagnet replied to sjpitts's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
The problem with the guides paying ranchers to shut down their lands for the use of the guide only is that it hurts us all in the long run. While the guide enjoys hunting the now much less wary animals and looking like some kind of superstar in his new self created "zoo" , the public has now lost an opp. to hunt the ranchers property for ever. Once the strings of greed have been plucked there's no going back most likely. If the ranch is already locked up for what ever reason this doesn't apply, but if an outfitter approaches a landowner and talks him into it, that's when we all as hunters get hurt, and all just for the sake of one guys"{the guides} ego. I would hope when the public hears of or finds out that a rancher has been talked into closing his gates by one of these super selfish ego driven guides these days who by doing this are admitting to us and themselves that they actually don't know how to hunt public lands and have to create some kinda little mexico in arizona so they can actually kill a few good bucks. This boils down to whats good for one person or a few or what should be done or not be done for the sport of hunting as a whole. This isn't a question of fair or not fair, but a question of should it be done or shouldn't it be done for the future of the sport itself. I personally would never hire a guide who does this with ranchers, or at least tries to talk ranchers with open gates into locking them. It's def a sign of someone with a lack of the ability to look forward for the sport, and the most obvious sign of all, he's def ego driven and selfish at best. The sport is going to the few in a hurry, throw in all the dog and pony shows be perpetuated on us all or at least the ones who aren't in the "know", then mix in tons of smoke and mirrors, and you have what huntings become over the last 10 years. Just imagine what it will be in another 10. Just cause it can be done doesn't mean it should be done. I think theirs several guides now that if had the option and there was a button somewhere that could be pushed and if they were the first one to push this button, the guide would be loaded with cash and held up as the best hunter/lecturer/killer of all time that several of them would jump on the button yesterday even if it meant hunting was adversely affected from that point on. Go with someone who doesn't need to shut down private stuff for their own ego, go with someone who shows they can look into the future and not just their own pocket, and last but not least go with someone who considered you the average hunter in this thought process cause by not making the call to the rancher he did us all a favor including the guides future kids or grandkids who may hunt someday. Smoke and mirrors, dogs and ponies, and egos equal catastrophic results for future generations. -
Is this someone baiting? (Pictures)

Did you smell a skunk when you were down there. Looks like a grow especially when there is water nearby. -
That could have been me in the dodge but that's not my truck though. I've found more big bulls doing that very thing than you could shake a stick at except I'm doing it in the dark. One of the most effective ways to find clusters of elk I've found.

Lets get back on subject here!! Who has the 23 north archery tag on this site? Since my main goal in life right now is to quit guiding finally and make some real money once again, the dudes and dudets with 23 north archery need to pm me. I've got the location of that scrape line on the road and a couple other notorious scrape lines its taken me 25 years to figure out. Would love to see someone else enjoy some of places I've been stomping around in!!! Started building houses again and can't wait to start hunting myself like i used too, instead of for others!!! -
Perfect shot on a dandy buck!!

couesmagnet replied to LovinthehuntAz's topic in Elk Hunting
I would have taken that as a complement, when she said there were no big bulls except bones great bull, she was just saying bones was the only big bull there was, thus calling bones bull a big bull. who cares if it was shot within 500 yards of the young road. What does it matter, there were 20 bulls right there were he shot his bull every morning. Heck we ran down that section of road a couple of mornings and almost ended up killing a 380 within 300 yards of the road. -
