I'm planning on heading out with my son on friday afternoon. It will be my first time quail hunting. We'll see how it goes haha.

How many pears did it take to make that size cup in your pic? Do you run the pears in a juicer? I probably had 3lbs of over ripe pears. I boiled them, then I mashed them, then I strained it. That left me with 2.5 cups juice, then simmered it with equal amount of sugar. It was super clear I couldn't even see any pulp in it. I thought I'd have thorns all over heck but it wasn't that bad. Nice man I'm gonna have to try that! I usually pick up pears for my tortoise when I'm out in the desert. Looks like I'll have to stock up some more for me now. Thanks for the info.

This past January was out chasing some coues out in 36a. In the distance there was a White chevy truck on a road that led to a huge tank. I seen the truck slowly making his way down the road. I seen the truck park and no one get out. I figured he was glassing the hills from his truck. All the while, if I had to guess maybe 20-25 yards away from the truck one huge mule deer and about 6-7 does crossed the road. The guy never saw them. They crossed the road and dropped into the wash that led to that tank. I always remember that buck. At the distance I was at, in my 10x it was a huge muley!

Somewhat similar to what happened to me and my cousin couple years back. Was putting a stalk on a nice muley and a doe busted us. He started heading up an opposite hillside when we realized there was a solo hunter sitting there that was skylined and looking the other way. I think the deer winded that guy because he stopped at about 35-40 yards and changed directions real quick. The guy never turned around.

Hmmm let me think about that one. Was really wanting to stay with a glock in 9mm right now. I may consider it though? Anyway you could PM me some pics of the XDM?

Is it hard to do without dogs? I have a couple spots I've seen quail in. I've never hunted them. It can be frustrating without a dog. I've dropped birds and looked twenty minutes only to find them dead right where I thought they went down. Just make sure that right after your shot you kick the ground where you are so you have a reference from where you shot. Then visually mark where the bird was hit and what direction it fell. As soon as you get to that spot, drop your bag or mark the ground and start walking in increasingly larger circles till you find the bird. Quail hunting in the desert is totally doable (and a lot of fun) without a dog. Just don't shoot if it will fall into high brush or hard to reach areas cause you'll never find those birds.
