    Mike Udall aka Treestandman

I am very sad to hear about Mike's passing. My prayers go out to his family with all my heart. I bought a tree stand from Mike about 3 years ago. I had never hunted from a treestand and when I went to his house to pick it up, he was so very enthusiastic about hunting coues. He invited me into his backyard and showed me the stand and how it worked. He also told me about the importance of a harness and how safety is paramount to hunting 17 feet off the ground. He fielded all of my questions with so much patience and understanding. He also had been through all of the learning curves of hunting from high places. He even told me how he shot his first coues buck. I knew I was learning things from someone who shared the same hunting passion and that was our only meeting, one in which I will NEVER forget. He went onto show me his shed collection of bucks he had been watching for years. Our conversation opened my eyes to trail cameras and what is possible with some effort and determiniation. We looked at the pictures on the computer, some he had posted on CWT over the years and others I don't believe he shared with many others. The following summer I backpacked into an Arizona Wilderness with my Treestand and a 43lb pack. 4 Miles from any road,a world off the ground. If you have ever hunted coues from a stand in complete silence with a bow and arrow. I think that's the closest you can come to perfection in life. A 90" velvet coues came within 15 yards of my stand , but I never got a chance to draw on him. Mike- You taught me to hunt from a Treestand and for this I will always thank you. Douglas Parch AzP&Y
  3. After spending the last 3 years collecting coues sheds {some bought some found} I decided to contact someone to put them to good use. I called Mr. Bill Bishop sr. with Antler Art in Lakeside. He is one of the premier antler artists in Arizona and the western United States. I described what I wanted and he proceeded to build me a custom one of kind coues lamp. It consists of 13 sheds, some which were originally browns and others that Bill was able to stain as a result of developing an incredible antler stain {through 15 years of trial and error}. The craftsmanship was evident when I tried to find the electrical cord which is intricately housed in the individual sheds. I thought the crab-claw was a nice touch at the apex of the lamp. I'm still looking for a lamp shade to compliment this work of art. Here is another one of a kind masterpiece that Bill is currently work on: It is an 8(ft)x 8 (ft) custom elk chandelier... NOW THAT's A BONE PILE! It consists entirely of trophy 5,6, and 7 point sheds AzP&Y Doug

  10. And If you are Coati crazy- check out this read. - CHULO- A Year Among the Coatimundis. by Bil Gilbert. It's actually a pretty good read. These folks spend like a year with these critters up near Kitt Peak in Az. I've glassed em up a few times and run into them in the hills also. Tribal critters. Nice trail cam pics- Good spot for sure! AzP&Y

    backpacking hunts

If you want a great trail, yet solitude and nice hunt - check out this section of the Az Trail in the Supers: http://www.aztrail.org/passages/pass_19.html Great access and water up there as well. For packs you may want to check out the new Badlands Sacrifice from the sponsor on here - Payson Outfitters. That pack has 3800 cubic inches and weighs in at 3lbs 8oz. It can carry 25 times its weight ( Coues deer) . Everything starts and ends with your pack. Big Agnes makes some of the best ultralight tents on the market. It will be down right cold. I suggest a good ultralight bag. Western Mountaineering is great company. I wouldn't skip any steps in buying the very BEST gear you can afford as it can get nasty winter-time in them there hills... oh and 1gallon of water weights 8.2 lbs. As others have said , there is water in the supers and generally a filter in Dec/Jan will serve you well. Best of luck and take pics as there is nothing like backpacking into wilderness on a bow hunt. AzP&Y

D Y, Don't overlook the access of the Az Trail that comes through HardScramble. This is Arizona public land at it's best. http://www.aztrail.org/passages/pass_26.html Get in a there a bit. Run your glasses over some nice country... Off the beaten path- there will be no motorized hindrance to your hunt. Good luck! Doug Arizona Trail Steward

    Snakes

I ran into a Mohave in March on my 18.6 mile solo trip of a section on the Az trail. North of superior. The most aggressive rattlesnake I've ever seen. Made the wicked move towards me as I was sitting along a small flowing creek enjoying the morning. A few rocks whipped at Nolan Ryan speed and he moved off. I was over 5 miles from the nearest road. Vigilance is everything in Arizona's snake country... Western D backs just seem more non-confrontational... AzP&Y
