Here is the picture of my New Mexico antelope.
-
Well not much of a story. I had to shoot at it 4 times to hit it. It was just before dark and the goat was headed up a hill. My hunting buddy Mike was with me. The first shot was from 300 yards. Mike said I shot way over his back. Next shot 325 still over his back. I didn't think the Winchester short mag would shoot that flat. Third shot just over his back at 375. Last shot I held it dead center, and the antelope fell in his tracks at 400 yards. Landowner tag from a ranch between Raton and Clayton. The head is at Weller's. They are doing a wall pedestal mount for me. That Bob Weller sure seems like a nice guy. He took us through the whole operation and explained how all of it is done. We met several of his workers. Pretty expensive but I like doing business with people who care. Lee

izquik72 I'm heading that way tomorrow. My tag is on a 1000 acre ranch outside of Clayton. My buddy has 3 tags on a big ranch between Raton and Clayton. Are you going to be close to us? My dates are Aug 21-23. This is my first antelope hunt and excited doesn't do it justice. Lee

We have an extra tag for eastern N M. The ranch is 21,000 acres and is between Raton and Clayton. $750.00 If your interested please PM me for details. Lee

Did anyone draw in this unit for mule deer? I'm pretty familar with the unit and do not mind showing fellow members around. I will also show you where you can pick up a liitle trash while your scouting. Lee

If he gets drawn look me up. I can show you some places to get started on your scouting. Lee

My favorite stock tank in 36a just got some water a couple of days ago. The usual tanks that are year round still have some water. Hopefully by the weekend most will have water. The deer have been hitting the water troughs pretty heavy. Lee

They were hissing and making a lot of noise. I took some video with my cell phone, but it's not very good. -

They didn't have a smoke, but they did cuddle for a little while. -

Just nature!! nothing sick about the birds, bees, and Gila monsters! -
I hunt 36a all the time. If you put in for that unit and get drawn let me know. I can show you some areas you can take your great aunt. There are several big ravines that you can put her on if you are looking for mule deer. Lee

The web site said they will draw in June. Do they really wait that long? Lee

Here's another post for doing your own work. Shot my deer the first day of the mule deer hunt. Put it in the refridgerator in 4 hours. Butchered it 8 days later. That night had a strap roast. Been on the road for the last 2 weeks. Tonight was a ham steak. I also ground up some pork and mixed it with the deer burger for 15 lbs of summer sausage. I'll smoke it tomorrow. Nothing beats doing it yourself. Lee

Amamda, if you could get them to put out some Christmas decorations, then take another picture. Ask permission to sell them as post cards on the web site. I bet they would go like hot cakes!! Lee -
I'm not sure what to think of this article. Here is a link to Subaru's drivers web site. What do you think?? http://www.drive.subaru.com/Spr09/Spr09_feature.htm Lee

They also had several cases of people killing mule deer during whitetail weeks and vice versa. Lee

I have the Tucson Secter office on speed dail. That # is 520-514-4662. The past several years I have used it and they respond pretty quick. Lee

Last December I posted this picture of a mule deer I found during the archery hunt. I could only get within 75 yards of him. My comfort zone is only 40 yards. so needless to say I've been looking for him ever since. Then today I think I found him.

Oak, thanks for putting the pictures together. I'm not that tech savey. In my mind I could see the similarity. lee

Here is a close up of the crabclaw and a picture from my front yard bone yard.
-
Well, I hope you guys are right. It's just that I watched him for a long time from behind some 15x56's. The crabclaw with 3 points is hard to believe that 2 deer within 1/2 mile of each other could have the same formation. Also the kicker on the same right side. However, like you pointed out the rack at the back on the dead deer seems to be closer together that the live deer. I am still going to be out looking as hard as I can. Lee
-
Coues Archer, I hope your right, but the crab claws on the fronts look just like the deer I saw in December. And he has a kicker on his right antler that is also the same. Maybe the dead one is his little brother. I'm still going to be in the area for the early rifle hunt this fall. Lee
