Camo choices in Sierra vista az ?
peckl1 replied to ArcheryHunter's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
I use both natural gear and mossy oak brush. They both work well all year. I like the Brush pattern when the desert is green. Seems to work pretty good. Lee -
terry good luck on your hunt. Lee

It's real dry out there. Even with the rains the tanks are still dry. Here are some pics from some troughs.

Yes, I did pretty good this year. I have a Sept Bull elk tag for 4b and an early 36a mule deer tag. How about you? Lee

Well I drove over Box Canyon road this morning. They did stop the fire at the road. I didn't see any burn north of the road. The east end of the fire they stopped at the trail head just west of the fork of Melendrez road and Box Canyon road. Here are some pictures.

Tomorrow I'll be going out and doing some walking around. I think I can just drive out Box Canyon road and stop somewhere. I'll let you know what I find. Lee

Went out this morning looking for mule deer sheds. This is what I found out on the flats. Sorry only have my cell phone at home right now. Lee

Yes this year's shed. No sun fading or bite marks. Lee

Anyone know about hunting in Virginia? I have access to hunt 1500 acres of cow farm land along the Potomac River. Out of state hunting permits and license will only cost around $200 to be able to kill 8 deer. 3 bucks and 5 does. I guess they have a lot of deer there. Just wondering if anyone on here has done any hunting in the area. Lee

My bird block kept going away too quickly, too. This is what I got on a trail camera in my yard.

I've had the good fortune of being able to hunt for the past week and a half. Mostly watching the does herd up. I been sitting on a few different herds. They have had nothing bigger than a good size fork with them. Until today! I was sitting on a ridge with 22 does and fawns bedded down in the ravine below. They kept watching both up the ravine and down. I watched them for 2 hours. Then all of a sudden they jumped up and right in the middle of them was a BIG 5x5. He sniffed a few rear ends and did a few lip curls up in the air. Then the herd started moving up the opposite side of the ravine. When they got on top of the ridge I caught movement to the right of them. At first I thought lion, but it turned out to be 5 coyotes. They were moving slowly toward to the deer. Then, when they were within about 20 yards 6 of the biggest does charged the coyotes. The coyotes flushed like quail and ran back up the ridge. The deer continued feeding on the top of the ridge. As they fed over the ridge and got out of sight, I started to try and get down wind and across the ravine and up behind them. I thought they had headed up the ridge. As I reached the top of the ridge I expected them to be above me and up wind. Well I was wrong, as they went over the ridge they turned and went down the ridge. As I got there, they were down wind. They busted out in all different directions. I could not find the buck. I spent some time trying to glass, but he was gone. Back to the truck and took off to get to another herd I've been watching. I had to circle around on the road by the ridge I just came from. as I started down into a canyon There stood a lone deer. It turned out to be the same 5x5. He has small crab claw type front tines. He was coming into a cattle trough for a drink. I watched him move out and then up the ridge. I had no chance at geting close without spooking him completely out of the area. Sorry for the quality of the picture but he was pretty far off. Lee

Thanks for the good wishes. I'll be back out again tomorrow. Lee

Ethics get in the way of everything

I passed on a 60 yard shot today. He was a great 4x4. I would have had to try a shoot through some occotillo or wait for him to clear. I waited for him to clear and just as he did he turned. I grunted and wheezed but he would not stop and turn. I chased him all morning and could not get another chance. I know where he is hanging out and hopefully I get another chance. Lee -
I know this is a little early, but I think I will be pretty busy the next couple of days. I hope all have a wonderful Holiday with your family and freinds. Sunrise over the Santa Ritas this morning. Lee

Thanks for the info. It turns out they only have a few parcels left in this phase. The one I looked at is right on Aravaipa Creek. They will be opening up a section west of the road up in the foothills. So that would actually be unit31. Lee

Today I'm meeting someone to look at some land at Eureka Springs Ranch. Don't know much about the area. The game and fish web site says access in unit 32 is very restricted. Any info on this area or it's history would greatly be appreciated. Thanks Lee

Denny, I have the same hunt. I went out yesterday and setup my tent. I'll be out there a little later today to finish setting up my camp. It takes a couple of trips out to get it all out there. My camp is just a little north of the Penitas Hills. Stop by if you see my truck Chevy Z71. Green Cabelas lodge pole tent. I can give you some advice on where the bucks are. Just not the bucks I have picked out for my brother and I. Boy wasn't that an egotistical statement. Any way I can tell you where we will be hunting so we don't step on each other. Lee

Congrats on a good buck. Lee

Just in case you don't know I travel for work. Last week I was in Anchorage and this week I'm in Billings MT. I have the good fortune of visiting Cabelas, Bass pro shops and Sportsmans all over the country. Tonight I went into the Sportsmans here. What a difference than Tucson. Every single person that worked there stopped and asked if they could help me. In Tucson I have to go looking for someone if I need help. It made such and impression on me I had to post it here. Lee

As others have said, words can not describe how we feel when things like this happen. Just know my prayers are with you and your family. Lee
