I would have to say that no matter what, you would have to go by the tail. There are too many instances where coues deer may have a side that forks like a muley and vice versa. I'd put up an argument if I took a deer with a fluffy white tail and someone told me it was a muley. It may have more muley characteristics but it does have what counts..... a whitetail. Singleshot, yeah I know where your sayin. Hope to find that ones offspring someday when I've got my rifle and tag in hand and beat the older brother to the shot. It's my turn

Man if that last pic. is considered a coues deer, that thing is ridiculously huge. Sure does look like a muley in characteristics, but it does have that white underside to its tail. I know if I came across a buck like that and saw a fluffy white underside to that flag, I'd have to pull the trigger myself. I remember one time out hunting, I busted up 3 deer. Two of them looked identical to coues deer. Color, size and how they got the heck out of there. The other doe was a lot bigger and in appearance looked a lot different. When I saw her start stotting off, I figured it was a muley doe with the two coues deer. However, when I looked closer through my glasses, I noticed that dang thing had dark markings on her outer part to her tail, but, it was definitely with out a doubt, fan-like. It wasn't the rope tail like muleys have. Her actions were mule deerish, but with coues deer, and a whitetail. The face of your buck does have muley features. I've heard that over time, deer in certain areas will adapt to their environment and develop certain characteristic features. So maybe if there are more muleys in that area with few whitetail, throughout time, they may have developed and changed to look more like a mule deer. Kind of like humans. In certain areas, people talk certain ways and look certain ways. I don't know. Just my thoughts. Cool looking buck regardless.

I've noticed that lately, there have been commercials about this kinda thing on t.v. There is supposed to be a website you can go to, to learn how to protect yourself in scams like these. -

Happy Birthday Amanda! Hope its great! -
Alright, you need to spill the frijoles. Selling 1 year old SLC 15's at a good deal and a Leica 1200 rangefinder? Hmmm Could Swaro be comin' out with a bino/ranger like Leica?

That is cool to see your children have learned how to hunt. That should give you a good feeling knowing that you taught them how to be able to be successful in the field. They're doing what you taught them to do! That's cool. Pretty soon (in years to come) they'll be the ones doing the scouting for you and taking you out in the field. Congratulations to you and your kids!

Big congratulations to that happy boy!

That's some nice lookin' country you are in. The 15's will be nice to add to your hunting equipment and surely help to glass up some more deer! I HATE RATTLESNAKES. I HATE RATTLESNAKES. I HATE RATTLESNAKES. In the early season, I get boogered pretty trying to walk when the grass is high. If I see a snake, I'm pretty much done. I do the tail between the legs gig and get pretty freaked out. I was just speaking with my dad about my uncle and cousin out scouting. I guess they came up on a big rattlesnake that had just started to devour a cottontail. They were checkin' it out for a few minutes and it had started to rattle. The scary thing is, my uncle could not here the rattle and they were right next to it! Now that's dang scary right there. With the old age, that frequency that the rattle is in can no longer be picked up in his ears Time to get out the gaiters I'd say. I invested in some last year and have no regrets at all. Might think about getting a pair. If nothing else, at least you'll have a piece of mind knowing you have them on.

Welcome, We do have an initiation ritual. You have to give the Unit, Gps coordinates, and set up a trip to the area that you have your camera set up Sorry we gotta do that to ya, but its only fair -
Just ordered the system. It'll be here in a few days and hopefully it works out nice.

Thanks for doing the field work and research for us Doug . I was searching for something other than the crooked horn system too. I have the same complaints; elastic stretching too far, adjusters slipping etc . I'm gonna give this system a shot and see how it works. Looks pretty nice. Especially if you have some expensive glass and have to go busting through some brush . It's nice to have them protected without having to pull them inside of a jacket. Thanks

A few years ago I had some buddies from Mississippi come out to go Mule Deer hunting down in a southern unit. One of them took a real nice 2 point and all we did was threw some ice in his chest cavity as well as around his inside parts of his hind quarters. We left him out overnight to chill down and during the day, we wrapped him up in some old sleeping bags to keep the cold inside of him and that worked really well. It was in the upper 70's low 80's during the day, but the deer kept well.

AWESOME!! Congratulations to you and your boy. Nice looking buck too!

That's just a small set of sheds off of a mulie. Not a real big deal man. Just Kidding. It's a TOAD of a coues buck. Hope you nail him this year!

what to do
Coues79 replied to bowhunter4life's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
IMO, I would take your boy into the area and give it a shot. Like has been mentioned before, you have to catch that big boy out in the daytime. That's could be a struggle to do anyways. That deer didn't get that big by being stupid and chances are, you may not be able to find him during the daytime anyways. But, if you did get the chance to have your son take him, and then have him pass on it, you would have to be prepared to possibly never see that buck again in your lifetime and kick yourself later for not taking the opportunity when you had the chance. He may get shot, lion killed or some other bizarre occurance. To me, I would rather have my son have a chance at a monster buck like that if the chance presented itself. If he did shoot it, at least you were part of the hunt and he would always have that memory of you being with him and vice versa (you'd also be the worlds best guide ever and best dad ever too!) As far as the future and having him being spoiled with taking big bucks, I say "whatever". Hunting in this state is going to get harder and harder in the upcoming years. I don't think the opportunity to take a quality buck like this will be as great in the future, so, why not take advantage when you can? I honestly doubt that you would regret seeing your boy shoot this buck if the chance presents itself. Hope you get him! BTW, that is a PIG of a buck. I'd say he is in the 120 class range as well. He's absolutely huge and one buck I would love to see in the hills!! -
Way to go! That's a dang nice bull down right there. Keep up the straight shootin'!
-
Dang! What a successful start to a lifetime of adventure out in the hills. Those are all really nice animals he took! The coues is especially nice. Congratulations to your boy!
